Comments: If you need a good reel for a year, this is a good choice. After a year the frame will flex, causing the gears to grind. Also the thumb bar will stick every 50 or so casts. P.S. do NOT use this for crankbaits.

Comments: Amazing reel! I got a combo with this reel including the Berkley Lighting Rod. The combo all together was $70! I got it at Dicks Sporting Goods. I got none or 1 backlash every time i go fishing, and it is very easy to get it. I have had no problem with this reel. For the price, it is absolutely unbeatable.

Comments: LOve it!!!!!! this reel is a great purchase if you are looking for a good reel at a good price! it can handle big fish very easily! i have mine on a lightning rod shock and it performs just like more expensive reels!!!!

Comments: I think it's a great reel. I'm a beginner with Casting reels. I had alot of problems at first, but after talking to someone who uses them all the time and followed his suggestion of heavier line then I normally use and to set the dual casting controls tighter then the instructions called for. I haven't had any problems since. I catch a lot of smallmouth and largemouth as well as Pike no problems. I just caught a 5LB Smallmouth the other day and it handled great. In the past I 've always use Spinning reels but now am thinking of buying another MAX.

Comments: i have 15 of these and i love them i could never use another reel.
Comments: i have no clue why you would think this is a bad reel. its not anywhere close to the best, but for $59.99, you cant beat it! i have mine on a 7' lightning rod shock with 14 lb. flouro. i fish yearly, 2-5 times a week, and i have had this about 8 months! but for 5 bearings, its smooth as can be. it casts smooth as well. it handles big fish great! i caught a 4 1/2 lb shoal bass with mine.... if any of yall have ever caught a shoalie, you know how they fight. the only problems i have had with this reel are that its not a quiet casting reel, but its smoothness makes up for it. also, its a bit hard to adjust... but if you have time to figure it out, then your good. if you're looking for a good reel to start with... or just just looking for a quality reel for a good price.... this is yours! i have been a fan of abu for 35 years, and they have never let me down! so keep on fishing (:

Comments: I purchased one of these for my wife to learn on. I performs well in a variety of situations. No this reel is not as good as the revo series. However it is a good reel to purchase if you are looking for something to learn on and eventually upgrade. If you are an avid angler and put a lot of stress into your equipment as I do this reel is unfortunately not what you are looking for. I suggest this for beginners and then go to an SX or STX model (premier too)

Comments: I bought a Black Max before this like it so much I bought a Silver Max too. Works great. casts slightly smoother than my Black Max. (Works great with mono 12# test Berkley XL.) I love them both. left hand retrieve to boot! Did not experience all the issues some people have with theirs. Its coupled with a Berkley Lightning Rod. I love it. Great entry level reel. Can't wait to use it again this weekend.

Comments: this is the only real i have ever had that actually "fell apart" on me. it slipped when reeling, cast horribly, and one day the drag decided to QUIT. it got stuck in the lightest position and would not tighten. couldn't even reel in line. Never buy a reel with the word max in it.
From: Jim: Guntersville, AL
Comments: Got this reel for my first bait caster and its horrible. It doesn't cast very far and is very loud. The thumbar also gets stuck down often.
From: Mike: Long Island, NY
Comments: I've had several Abu Garcias and never had a bad one.
From: Brandon:
Comments: I bought this reel as a combo equipped with a berkley lightning custom rod. I absolutely love this reel and the price. I have only one down fall, caught a 3 pound largemouth on it and it seemed to be slipping a little while reeling her in. haven't had or noticed any other problems with it. Casts a mile and has a reasonably smooth retrieve for only having 5 bearings. For the gentlemen that said he doesn't know how a more expensive reel could be any better, I have a quantum tour edition pt and there is absolutely NO comparison what so ever. You get what you pay for.

Comments:The Silver Max is the best reel out there for under $100.00 BOTTOM LINE! I have 5 of them and have never had not one problem whats so ever.
You have to set the reel up for the type of lure you are going to use. If you change lures you need to re set it even if it's the same lure just a different color. I also check and reset my reel after 20 to 25 cast just to make sure it is tuned. I have watched videos on how to set them up and seen different ways to do it but it's all pretty much the same way.
The way I set mine up is to put the lure on the line, Set the brake to the max setting, that's the lever on the left side of the reel. Hit the trigger to let the line out and if it falls fast I tighten the small lever on the right, if is doesn't fall I loosen it up. When setting this knob a hair adjustment can make a big difference, so turn it very little at a time and recheck the drop of the lure. I keep tighten and loosening until my lure falls smooth and stops about 10in. from the tip of the rod. The less brake the more distance I get. Be careful because you can still let out to much brake and it will backlash.
Good luck! I know you can do it my little girls 9 and 11 years old fish with the Silver Max and I do set the reels up but they don't have any trouble casting. One more thing.... The higher dollar reel are easier to set up, use and, work better and last alot longer, I am no pro and I fish year round 3 to 4 times a week and the Silver Max does just fine for what I do.

Comments:This is my first casting reel. It works smooth and flawlessly. It casts a mile. The drag works wonderful. The magnetic brake works well. I can't imagine what more expensive reels have to offer over this.
From:Fidrat: Iowa City, IA
Comments::Who ever thinks these reels are good must not have ever used them. Mine back spins and reels up on one side, Black Max is trash also. 1 month of heavy use and they were done, even with proper care.
From:Robert: Texas, USA
Comments:I got this reel a few weeks ago and it was very noisy and didn't cast well. I ended up taking it apart and oiled it up. The bearings had no lube on them at all. After I put it back together and tried it, it cast a lot better and wasn't noisy at all. Whoever put it together didn't do their job! I have a Black Max also and I haven't had a bit of problems with it! Great reels for the money!
From:Anthony: Vineland, NJ
Comments:Comments:Amazing reel that can be used for just about anything. The best reel I have ever had that was less than $100 dollars. Will be buying a few more real soon.
From:
Comments:I bought one in February, here it is July and the dog gone thing is already broke. I used it only for spinners and cranks, I will say that it was a good real when I first got it but now it is just another piece of junk.
From:Greg: Chrisman, IL
Comments:I got the Silver Max for a birthday present and it is supreme to any other of my bait casters. The Silver Max is versatile for any kind of baits. Tag up another one for Abu Garcia.
From:Ryan: Yorktown, VA
Comments:I bought 2 of these reels after I bought a revo stx. All are great reels. Whomever thinks the silver max is cheap is wrong. These are great reels. Casting is superb and the 6.2 gear ratio is fast enough to burn a bait all day and not get too tired.
From:Peter: New Haven, MO
Comments:This real is a joke, I just bought one and it feels like a shakspere casting reel, so I returned it. Now I got a Revo S and boy let me tell ya it is awesome. Put out the extra money and get a Revo, you won't be disappointed.
From:Beloved: Sewaren, NJ
Comments:This reel is worth every penny. If I didn't know better I would have thought this was a $200 reel.
From:Ryan: Springfield, IL
Comments:An exceptional all purpose reel that I've come to expect from a company I have trusted for many years, and many years to come.
