703SF - Super Versatile RodLet me start by saying that I have fished just about every model Dobyns makes, from the XPs all the way up to the Xtasy line of rods. I have a ton of on the water experience with XP Dobyns line of rods. They have become my go to line of rods for ALL moving bait applications. IMHO, Dobyns spinning rods have the perfect, parabolic, action for moving bait applications that keep fish pinned all the way back to the boat. I can't remember the last time I lost a fish I hooked on a XP rod. My review is specifically for the 703SF. This rod has become my go to jerkbait, walking bait and popper rod. I always have one of these three baits tied on and on my deck every trip, and it is ALWAYS tied on the 703SF. I can cast all these baits a mile on this stick. It has the perfect action to easily walk a spook style bait and a jerkbait up to 1/2 oz. And when you set the hook, it has the perfect action to not tear out the trebles while fighting the fish, while still having enough backbone to handle 5lb + fish. The applications I am fishing this rod are not bottom contact applications, so sensitivity isn't a prior for me, so I can't speak to the rods' sensitivity and to be honest, I use Steez rods for all my "feel" applications. I can't say enough good things about how versatile the 703SF is and what a fantastic jerkbait / topwater rod this stick is! I highly recommend the XP line for any moving bait application for bass.

Comments: The 703 is amazing feels better than my GLX. I will be adding Several more to my line up. Sensitive as a rod twice the price. Balance is the best I've ever seen.

From: Jason: Royse City TX 2/25/23

Comments: The Champion XP is the flagship of the Dobyns lineup. If you are a Loomis fan, this would equivalent to the IMX branding. The Champ spinning models come in a huge number of.lengths and actions. I own three; 702, 703, and 792. If you only had to pick two rods to dedicate to finesse, the 702 and 703 Champ would be a pretty hard duo to beat. Both of mine are 2nd Gen, and they've caught untold numbers of fish for me. The 702 has fished everything you could throw that's about 5/16oz and under, and it's my favorite jighead plastics (Ned, darterhead) rod of all time. The 703 had been my 5" senko rod in most situations, plus whatever else I needed it for until I expanded my quiver a few years ago. The 792 is my latest purchase and one that I found a pretty specific niche for here in the Southwest. I needed a rod that I could bomb small weightless plastics with 5-6lb flouro, with enough butt to get a T-rigged Rebarb or Cover Shot to penetrate. It's been flawless for this application, and it been great for throwing flies for smallmouth as well. If you are an OG split shot guy, it can throw a light weight split shot rig the proverbial country mile as well. If you are reading older reviews about guide issues, know that this was an issue with 2nd gens that used the Kigan brand of guides. The newest Gen use Fuji K series and they have very few issues. I have mostly Gen 2s and most have had a guide or two replaced. Dobyns will replace guides if you want to pay shipping, but I've always had a local shop do it for about forty bucks or just replaced it myself if I had time. This hasn't been an issue on any of my five Gen 3s I currently own, so if you are buying here on TW you are probably set!

Comments: Recently bought the 732 for dropshotting, neds, and finesse swimbaits. I paired it with a 3000 size Vanford and the balance point is just above the nut of the reel seet, which is perfect for me because I hold my spinning rods above the reel. I own a bunch of Dobyns rods from the fury to the champion extreme. I love them all and this rod is no exception. Light, sensitive, and casts those finesse baits a freaking mile with next to no effort. I still give this a 5/5 however there could be improvements. I wish this length of rod came in a split handle with a hook keeper in the handle for drop shot weights. Also I wish there was some cork above the real seat since I hold my spinning rods above the reel (so I am essentially holding the blank), it would just add a bit of comfort. However it is NOT uncomfortable to hold it without the cork. Overall, I have never been disappointed with any of my Dobyns rods. You cant go wrong with any of their rod series.

Comments: First of all big fan of Dobyns baitcasting rods and over all quality of the rods I've gotten from them. With that being said the design of the spinning rods is a head scratcher. There is no handle in front of the reel seat?? When you grip the reel between your fingers your front finger literally lays on the blank. Its weird. It's like the took the handle off a baitcaster and put it on a spinning rod. If you like a traditional spinning rod set up you won't like these rods. Hard to get the rod seated in your hand and it's uncomfortable.

From: Drew: Tennesse 8/12/21

Comments: 703.... I you haven't put one of these in your hands?? You should!! This is my hands down favorite spinning rod ... light!! Sensitive!!! And feels great!! It's a better feel than my GLX, and it was double the price.. I'm convinced yiur paying for the G-LOOMIS name, after having and using this?? I'm decently getting more!! Iv used plenty of rods in my day and can tell u first hand , THIS IS A PEICE OF WORK!! Paired with a 2500 tatula LT and it's insane , feels like in holding next to nothing in my hand!! If I ask me? DOBYNS DOSE IT RIGHT, and doesn't try to kill your bank account in the process!!  My mind is completely changed at this point.. can't wait for first tournament!!! Thank you at Dobyn!!! #1!!

Comments: The 7'9" Med Lt is by far the best spinning rod I've ever fished, so I decided to buy another because I always find myself putting whatever bait i want to fish on it. I mainly fish a ned rig on this rod because you can cast a light bait extremely far, and the long rod allows you to keep contact with the bait, and also pick up line when fish bite it. Also I've had good luck throwing 1/8 oz. 2.8 kietechs on this rod and it handles fish extremely well. The champion line of rods are very sensitive especially with braid on a spinning reel. I don't see myself buying another 7ft spinning rod anytime soon because these long sticks are so much better. I've waited for a rod like this to come out for a long time and Dobyns finally did it and I'm so happy!

From: Brandon: Ohio 1/3/21

Comments: I am a first time Dobyns rod owner and purchased the Spinning Champion XP 704 a few months ago and this is an amazing rod. It is light, balance and great backbone. My favorite uses are D-Rig, Senko's, Flukes and Jerk Baits.

From: Joseph: Chula Vista, CA 11/15/20

Comments: I have two 735s and this model in the 703. The guides on them are POORLY wrapped all of my rods have had eyes literally fall out to poor craftsmanship. I am not saying that I baby them but they are definitely used alot during tournament season and I am seriously impressed with the actions but the durability is HORRID.

From: Gary: Michigan 9/1/19

Comments: I just got my 701SF a few weeks ago and I am extremely impressed with the workmanship and the action of the rod. I bought it as a dedicated ned rig/light dropsot rod and so far it has blown my expectations out of the water. I am sure in the coming season that I will use this rod every trip throwing these two techniques. I also plan to throw tiny blade baits/spoon for whites when they are hitting. Overall, extremely happy with the rod. Don't be afraid to go down to the 701 if you were wanting something for the light stuff. It has good backbone for such a light tip.

From: Colton: Nex Mexico 5/16/18

Comments: Great rods. I've owned a few generations of the champions now. Glad that they switched to Fuji guides with all the new models. These are the most well balanced rods out there. Technique specific and they offer lengths in spinning that you just can't get anywhere.!only problem with these rods is if you buy one it doesn't stop there

From: Pete: AL 11/21/17

Comments: I received a 682 for Christmas. While looking the rod over for damage, I noticed the insert for the first guide was loose and rattling around. I shipped the rod back and received a replacement a few days later. The insert was secure on this rod, but the finish on the guide frame looked as if something was eating through it. While looking closer at the guide, I noticed epoxy on the guide insert and frame going about a quarter of the way around the first guide. It looked like someone had tried to fix the same loose guide I had a problem with. I don't know if this was the same rod I sent back or a different one, but I'm not going for a third try. I'm getting a refund and looking elsewhere for a new rod. Damaged guide aside, the rod felt a bit on the heavy side. Not wielding a 2 x 4 heavy, but heavier than my other rods. Pretty underwhelming experience with Dobyns all the way around.

From: Howard: AZ 1/11/17

Comments: UNBELIEVABLE rod! i own dobyns, G loomis, denali, daiwa, abu & powell & this is by far the lightest & well balanced but still super rugged rod. Never used the new tangle free K guides before but they seem to be holding up just fine if not beter & i love the split grip. only downfall bout this rod is where the hook keeper is behind the reel seat but its def not a good enough reason to keep me from buying 2 more.
