Jig Fishing With Alton Jones Gear Notes

Standard Jig:

"I use the 7 foot magnesium rod about 75% of the time. The flipping rod and Ardent F500 are a technique-specific outfit for when you fish in cover where no bass jig wants to go. The magnesium rod, though it's darn near indistructable, is for other applicantions where lightness and sensitivity are more critical."

Fooball Jig:

"Here you want a rod that will help you get the jig out there as far as possible, Jones prefers a 7' Kistler Alton Jones Football jig rod and the Ardent XS1000. The rod tip has to help you make a 150 foot cast and the butt end allows you to set the hook on a 7 pounder at the end of that cast."

Ball-Head Jig:

"Usually in clear water you're going to want to use lighter line and maybe a lighter jig, but if the water is stained, I'll stick with a baitcasting outfit." Jones prefers a 6'9" Kistler Helium II LTX medium action spinning rod with an Ardent S2500 spinning reel, or Kistler Helium II LTX 6'6" medium action rod with an Ardent SX1000 baitcaster.
