About This Reel
The flagship reel in the Shimano low-profile baitcasting line-up, the Shimano Antares Casting Reel delivers the ultimate in long distance casting capabilities and silky smooth performance. Shimano’s new SVS Infinity Braking System provides easy-to-manage spool control and consistent braking force for vastly improved casting - especially with lighter lures. The external adjustment dial is also located in a more convenient position (on the bottom, left side of reel) for fast, one-handed operation.
Equipped with Shimano’s new Micro Module Gear System as well, the new system utilizes smaller teeth and more of them to provide more contact points between the drive gear and pinion gear. This results in more efficient, smoother functioning, and combined with the X-Ship gear construction also provides improved durability and more precise alignment. Its lightweight magnesium frame and choice of two gear ratios also make the Shimano Antares perfect for multiple freshwater applications. Designed to stand up to the abuse of relentless fishing, the Metanium offers a level of refinement unmatched in the industry.
Comments: The smoothest cranking reel that I've ever owned/used. I purchased the 5.6:1 to specifically through big, deep diving crankbaits and it handles them with ease. I was a little concerned about line capacity initially, but it hasn't been an issue. I also like that the Antares is lighter than all of the previous "flagship" Shimano offerings: Calais DC, etc. Paired with the right rod, you can fish deep cranks for most of the day without being fatigued. My Antares sits atop a G. Loomis GLX cranking rod and it's a great combo.

Comments: I have both speeds. They are like Rolex watches, perfect. Easy to adjust on the fly and smooth as silk. I am a diehard Lew's fan so getting these Shimano reels was a departure from my comfort zone. Although they are very expensive I wanted to see what Shimano offered at their top of the line. They are truly works of art both in performance and build quality. They are equal in my opinion to my Lew's Team Gold. So if you want a reel that will make most of your buddies jealous get one of these, if you want the Antares performance on a budget go for a Lew's Team Gold or a Lew's Team Pro.
