7'1" MHBought this rod as a cheaper option after flying on a trip. I was really impressed with the quality for $60. I put braid on it and abused it at Lake Okeechobee recently and it did great. Its no $300 dollar rod so don't expect great sensitivity but for the price it makes for a great moving bait rod.

Comments: First off this line of rods are great of the price. I fish braid to a leader almost 100% of the time with hard hook sets in the thick stuff and have never broke one or ever had any problems with them. I own ever rod in this line and fish almost ever day. But all the new rods 13 is coming out with all have the same reel seat on them such as the meta. And it is unusable for me I really hope 13 can come out with some rods with a different reel seat or the one from the defy. If not thin ill use what I got and start replacing them with probably Lews rods I would hate to though because I really like my 13 rods.

Comments: Bought this rod around a year ago (7'1 mhvy fast) and I have to say dont buy this rod. Its heavy with no sensitivity at all i can barely feel a chatterbait vibrating with it unless your gonna go straight braid. I do have to say though I like the action it would be a perfect worm rod if it had any sensitivity at all. But overall don't buy it save up alittle more money and buy something worth your money

From: Jack: Indiana 8/3/22

Comments: I'm not a big expensive rod guy. Nothing more pricey in my little arsenal than a Daiwa Fuego, but I fish a bunch, mostly from a kayak. I bought a defy black 6'7 MH last year, mostly because Matt and Tim spoke very well of the D/B series as a budget rod. I have a few fenwicks, a lews, the fuego, and couple others, but the D/B quickly became my go-to rod, so Much so that I bought a 6'7 medium spinning for finesse stuff. The baitcasting rod is so comfortable, so light, so sensitive, so well balanced, especially paired with a daiwa cr-80 reel, that it just -feels- right in my hands. So I bought a second one. And then the 7'0 crankbait rod. I've been using one of the 6'7 mh for jerkbaits, but it's just a little stiffer than I want it to be. Great for presentation and that snap on the bait, but it's a little hard to keep 'em pinned on those treble hooks when they are on, so I'm looking at medium casters. While I'm looking at the fuego, and even a couple more expensive rods like the 6th sense Lux, the tatula jerkbait rod, etc, I am pretty sure that the serious value I've gotten out of these d/b series rods is gonna make me get the 6'7 medium for jerkbaits too. Been WELL over a year for both my spinning and first 6'7 medium heavy, and they are both holding up great, a nd they all go with me on every trip. Only crankbait rod stays home if I don't need it, so they pass the durability test for me. Oh yeah: the 6'7 mh is a very light medium heavy compared to some others, but it is good and fast - crisp tip, stiff backbone, and really sensitive for a cheap rod. Im definitely a fan

Comments: I have been looking for a heavy braid rod for a while. I was between this rod in 7'6" MH and a Daiwa Fuego in 7'6" H. I wound up going with this rod based on price and I haven't been disappointed. I paired it with a Shimano Caenan with 50# braid and I use it for heavy flipping and punching and I have loved it. Great sensitivity and perfect tip to backbone transition. I also throw glidebaits up to 3 1/2 ounces on it as well as a smaller 1/2 ounce Bucca Baby BullGill, has great flex to help throw the bigger baits as well as keep fish pinned on the smaller trebles of the Bucca. This rod is everything I wanted from a flipping/swimbait rod. I will definitely be buying more.

Comments: I've owned two 6'7 medium power rods and they both have unfortunately broke. They have both snapped right above the third eye. Before they snapped I loved these rods there lightweight and handle really well.

From: Will: South Carolina 1/23/22

Comments: Just received the 6'7" Medium model and it performs really well as a light moving bait rod. I have used it for small cranks and jerkbaits, for which the slightly slower action (being a more budget rod) is great. Will try it with small swimbaits and jigs in future to see how sensitive it really is. Would buy again, especially at the price!

From: Michael: Brockville, Canada

Comments: The majority of my rods are either Defy Blacks or Omens... great rods period! Go ahead and spend $250 on a rod, none of my business! My 7'3 DB moderate action rod has landed me 100's of bass ( boat flipped ) and has held up beautifully over the last 4 years! News Flash; rods break! $500 rods break & $60 rods break due to flaws in the blanks... that said, as far as I am concerned ( 40 years of fishing ) 13 Defy Black Rods are by far the best bang for your buck! Light, balanced, good looking and surprisingly sensitive for the price!

From: Steven: California 2/19/21

Comments: In my younger days I was a sponsored bass fisherman so I know the value of a good product. These Defy rods if used specifically with the right line and lure weight really work well. Both the medium spin and cast have a slow strike effect at the tip of the rod. Meaning there sensitivity there leaves a little room for improvement. Other than that the rod sweeps well at hook set and has enough back bone to fight and land larger fish. For a cheap priced rod the value to performance is pretty darn good. I would definitely buy another 13 fish product.

From: Patrick: 9/30/20

Comments: This is a great rod, for this or any price! Lightweight, well-balanced & strong. With 30lb. braid I have no trouble "horsing" lunker's out of the thick stuff. When it's time to replace any of my other rods, you can be sure 13Fishing will get my business (already looking at their spinning rods).

From:
Steve: 9/26/20

Comments:Decent rod for the price has good back bone for fighting and hook sets very stiff for sensitivity at the tip I like a slower rod tip but with mono it works fine the guides are a little to small for braided or super line I found that out quickly. If balanced with line and lure weight with mono or copolymer this rod works just fine.

From: Patrick: Kent, WA 9/26/20

Comments: Nice rod.. only complaint is where they put the hook keeper..I've not had this rod for very long but so far it's doing very well.

From: Unknown: 9/22/20

Comments:Bought this rod from tackle warehouse a few weeks back.Second time fishing final eye pulled off, and after about a week the rod broke.I have never broke a rod prior to a 13 fishing rod.I have a spinning rod from them also and I am already having issues. These rods are the old saying, you get what you pay for.

From: Keith: Byron Center, MI 8/19/20

Comments:Gotta say for my first 13FDB 73 its a great rod - killer components and taper. My only suggestion is they move the hook keeper up past the first grip - and lengthen the butt section a couple inches. Aside from minor comfort suggestions - these rods for the money cant be beat!

From: Calico Hunter: 8/15/20

Comments:Best bang for your buck.I have NEVER had any problems with the defy line of rods (old and new model).Biggest fish landed so far is a 40 lbs plus flat head on the 7'5" H gen 2 paired with Gen 2 conceptA.I dont know how everyone else is having problems with the defy rods (old defy and new gen defy) only think I can think of is not taking care of your gear.

From: Adam: Winona 8/10/20

Comments:Don't listen the the bad review(s). This rod is light, and the guides are normal size. I've fished this rod hard since the week after it came out and it has held up so far. The one thing that I don't like is that the handle is a weird foam/ suede mix and it gets dirty and stained. Other than that this rod is great for the price. The first generation was a great rod and this one is just as good! The blank is improved as well which is nice.

From: Aaron: 8/9/20

Comments:This is such a nice rod for the money. Had the gen 1 and loved it but this gen 2 feels more solid and well built. Caught a 6.5 lb largemouth on it this morning and it handled it like a beast. Solid backbone and a good fast tip. The paint and finish looks even better in person. For 60 dollars this is a steal.

From: Joe: New Hampshire 8/8/20

Comments: Big fan of defy black rods.I've have never snapped a defy black 1st gen or the no. 8 hellbent rod (old skool) on setting the hook.Just had first on the new 2nd gen defy black and it handled just like the 1st gen flawless (note using 7.5 H w/ concept a2).My only con for the 2nd gen defy black is the hook keeper, if you have a Texas Rig you'll have to unskin hook it. I own four 1st gen defy black, one no.8 hell bent 1st gen, one no.8 2nd gen hellbent and never snapped a rod on a hook set. Now I got 2 new 7.5 H defy blacks.

From: Lazy Nerd: Winona, MN 7/24/20

Comments: So I've had this rod for about a week and here's what I've learned (7'1 medium):
-It is more sensitive than the old one.
-The hook keeper is in a very weird spot and pretty much pointless. I had to put on a Fuji ez keeper on it for my own sanity
-The handles are a weird grey foam/ short hair suede mixture.
-I've had the rod for a week and the handle is stained already. I have to idea why put nothing has been on the rod except for water and maybe slime. Not a good look.
-I believe the blank is superior to the old blank. I can feel fish bite better with this rod. (Weightless senko)
Overall I think the Gen 2 is more sleek and better looking as well as more sensitive. Build quality is somewhat skeptical and the handle will deteriorate. All in all I think I'd buy another one. It's not heavy at all and feels good to cast. It loads up really well with small squarebills. I've caught at least 20 fish with it so far. The only thing I'm really hung up on is the handle getting stained. I wonder if it was EVA foam would it be better.

From: Aaron: Cincinnati 7/14/20

Comments: Although this is a very cheap rod, get something else. Only buy this rod if you like to lose fish. The guides are the size of a planet. Just yesterday I spotted a huge bass (6+) cruising an open pocket in a patch of lilies. I only bought this rod to carry on my new kayak as I get used to fishing out of it don't wanna lose an expensive rod. Anyway, I cast to the fish, no interest. Then, reeling my bait back, the bait slung itself around the tip and snapped my line. Having no other rods with me, I was out of luck, fish was already gone. This was the worse instance of the guides being an issue with this rod. Every other retrieve I take ends in the line wrapped and tangled around the massive tip guide. The rod itself is durable, grip is good, balance is good. Especially for one of the cheapest rods on TW. But the guides set this rod far behind the competition. Do yourself a favor, get something else. (If you like catching fish or at least having the option to)
