Overview

An exceptional pro-design by Bassmaster Classic Champion, Mike Iaconelli, the Berkley Powerbait Gilly Swimbait relies on Japanese influence in both design and technique to coax bass into biting, even in ultra-clear fisheries. Crafted to deliver an unbelievably natural presentation, the Gilly features a hyper-realistic profile that complements its unbeatable action. Rather than a more traditional segmented body style, the Gilly utilizes scale-shaped ribs in the tail section to provide undeniably realistic baitfish movements.

In addition to the great action and profile, anglers are destined to admire the Berkley Powerbait Gilly’s impressive versatility. While the bait really shines when rigged weightless with the hook sideways through the body, it can also be fished on a jighead, weighted swimbait hook, Texas Rig, and even on a Drop Shot Rig. Berkley really ups the ante by constructing the swimbait with Berkley’s iconic Powerbait formula that bass simply can’t resist. Offered in a range of hatch-matching colors, including convincingly lifelike HD colors, the Berkley Powerbait Gilly Swimbait is sure to help deliver plenty of tournament checks, and even more bass thumb.

Comments: Works great with a line through rig I made with a coffee straw, I like a nail weight in the belly too. 110 size works great for me but haven't had a good hookup ratio with an ewg. I like to reel and pause or slow and steady it kinda looks like a wake bait. Works great in ponds and bluegill lakes. Little guys go after the 110 size too but I'd say it's worth a try but try to find them on sale.

From: Mason : WI 9/23/23

Comments: First off you need a 1/0 EWG and it took me a while to hook it properly and hook it like how a Huddleston is hooked from the inside hook up protected by the weedless air pocket in the top of the Gilly. Then I had to put a nail weight in the lower front to get it to sit straight. Second, most of the positive reviews here can't be real.. there's just too many problems. I ran the Gilly and it needs to be jerked then reeled slowly then jerked or else it just has NO action just goes straight no flapping. Ok it looks great but I think this lure is made to catch the fisherman and it sure is hookin up alot there. I struggle to see how it could hookup with fish.. I took it off after 30 minutes of no nada fishing and zero action the bait sucks.

From: Eins: NJ 9/18/23

Comments: 1/0 EWG OR SMALLER!! This thing works and draws big bites. I let it sink "walk the dog" and pause. Looks like a dying bluegill. I have not lost a fish.

From: Zach: Virginia 9/7/23

Comments: DO NOT RIG IT SIDEWAYS. DON'T. I promise if you rig it with an ewg hook out the bottom and skin hook it in the side of the bait, it will swim straight every time.

From: Unknown: 9/5/23

Comments: If you want to buy and use it right out of the package like a normal soft plastic this product is not for you...

From: Val: Texas 8/19/23

Comments: Absolutely favorite bait this season. Tried side rigged hook up ratio wasnt great, used screwlock on nose and nose hooked with Wacky hook and nail wait and its money. Swims great and works on all 3 sizes have had success in every lake I've fished. Swimming twitch and alow to fall bam, caught my pb this morning on a HD bluegill. But versatile as can be skips under docks as well

From: Aaron: IN 8/3/23

Comments: I cant make it swim in the right way. Always on side. No way also with insert hook. Will not buy anymore.

From: Eros: 7/19/23

Comments: These thing swims horrible. Bought a few to try but rigging these with a EWG hook is ridiculous. They float too high and doesn't fall slow. I had to use a jig head to rig then it swims not true. Great idea bad design.

From: Unknown: 7/7/23

Comments: Good luck side rigging these things. The only hook I have been able to get to work is the VMC EWG ring hook. Berkley should design a hook that works with these things. The only plastic bait I have trouble rigging.

From: Mike: CEDAR CREEK TX 5/10/23

Comments: I see some people complaining about how they swim. I got a few tips that will help you out.. To swim upright like a actual bluegill you'll need to put a neko weight in the belly. Make sure you center it up and place it at the lowest point of the belly. You can play around with the weights for what depth you want it to swim.. For the hook situation, I use a hitchhiker and screw it into the nose, then put my hook through the hitchhiker loop. Make sure you use something to keep the hook from slipping out. You can screw the bait really tight to the hook and it stays, but I like the bait to have some movement. I back it off a little then I do a trick that I've done for years. I use an ordinary single-hole punch (for paper) and some plastic from a milk jug. I use that to punch out a little plastic disc. Next, I use pliers to hold the disc and I push the hook point through. The barb keeps it from coming off, they also make a perfect keeper for trailer hooks on spinnerbaits. It lets the hook move freely and not restricted as the usual rubber tubing does.. Far as hook style goes, a wacky hook or neko hook works well. The size depends on what size Gilly you're using. It's basically rigged like the Banjo Minnow was, it's the Banjo Gilly! Trust me it works and swims great, they look very realistic. I hope that helps, but honestly, I gave away too many tricks in this review.

From: Erick: Ky 5/11/23

Comments: Try using the owner Rig-N-Worm hooks; they work well with these. They seem to do best on a lighter spinning rod, too. My issue is that I can't get these to sink quick enough to get in the strike zone. They can be skipped like no other, however... I hoped for better during the spawn. they do look incredible when rigged correctly.

From: Tony K: Tulsa, ok 5/9/23

Comments: I really want this bait to work, Colors are nice, profile is good.... not a big swimbait guy so it would be great to find something EZ to throw like this... but .... haven't got bit yet and it doesn't run "Anatomically Correct" Please Ike stop saying Anatomically !!!

From: MG: Dina Rifa 5/8/23

Comments: I tried several ways of rigging this bait (90mm Size) and could never get it to run upright. With the side rigging it leans and swims at an unnatural angle. No more of these for me.

From: Steve: Texas 5/8/23

Comments: A pond lure at best. I would suggest that they make it pre rigged with a hook to be more like other swimbaits. I would rather stick with the lures that work for me than use this right now.

From: Unknown: 7/6/22

Comments: I bought a pack of the HD Pumpkinseed in the 110mm size. First thing I noticed was the terrible smell. Not like other Powerbaits, it smelled like nail polish remover. Maybe has something to do with HD Paint schemes? I have rigged it weightless through the side with a 3/0 EWG hook. I also added a nail weight because it was swimming on the side. When this thing runs true it looks amazing, but most the time it still leans. I tried a jig head and it swam true, but killed the action. I cannot speak to the durability as it haven't gotten a single bite. For the price and how much work I had to do to get it to swim right, I don't recommend this product.

From: Marc: Eustis, FL 6/28/22

Comments: If have finally figuried out this bait after trying all the recomended rigging tips and not liking any of them. I use this as a trailer on a 1/4 oz Diezel Chatterbait what a game changer bass after bass on this combo best way to fish this bait in my opinion.

From: Unknown: 6/22/22

Comments: Bait definitely catch's fish, just gets tore up really fast. Haven't found the right hook yet either. 2/0 owner twistloc is the perfect length but the gap of the hook is kinda small for how thick the bait is. 3/0 gamakatsu ewg has a good gap but is too long and heavy, messing up the action. 1-3 fish before changing baits

From: Ryan: Michigan 6/21/22

Comments: Running 130mm with a 4/0 beast hook and fits perfect! Using a small nail weight in the nose section, swims ok for what it is and catches fish very well but durability isn't there and for the price it's not worth it unfortunately.

From: Chris: Ohio 6/10/22

Comments: I have finally had enough time to make a good review about this bait I have fished the 130 and the 90 and have mixed feelings about the bait. Rigging it Texas rigged through the side is a decent way to fish them but I get less bites than the other method I am about to explain and completely ruin the bait even with a reinforced extra long screw lock it will last about 2 or 3 fish before it's trashed. On the other hand (pole bender) has a YouTube video on how to do a line through method with foam in the head and using a brake can cleaner straw and let me tell you it's a game changer. I put a little less foam so it's a super slow sink and can slow roll it burn it or fish it just like a glide. The bait is much much more durable as long as you don't use a coffee stir for the line through. I will definitely buy more and keep this bait to myself it's a fish catcher .

From: Collin: Alabama 5/6/22

Comments: BG is a great looking bait !! thats probly why all the hype ... at 1st the side rigging will make it seem weird but it works.... and there are some issues with it running true but if you want a spiraling dying presentation/ dock skipping ! then it is GO TIME ! My biggest peev is that the nose is going to tear up pretty quick and after that the only way to salvage is to make it a line thru .. screw lock swimbait hooks work the best for me.. overall 7.5

From: MG: Unknown 3/14/22

Comments: Great looking action if you can get it to stay upwards.

From: Unknown: Texas 3/9/22

Comments: Bait runs well and has infinite ways to rig and modify, much like the JDM variants this bait was based on. Not sure why folks are saying there aren't hooks meant for the bait, when it's meant to be rigged sideways with an EWG hook. Nose hook, T-rig, Neko, Free rig. You name it, this bait will fish well with it. Possibilities are endless for those willing to do the rigging

From: Andre: Gilbert, AZ 12/19/21

Comments: I would not recommend this bait. No hooks match's the bait thickness or height. I purchased all 3 sizes and tried all hook variations, but couldn't get it right. Don't waste your money.

From:  Unknown: Texas 12/4/21

Comments: This one caught a fisherman and not so much fish! Nice action just doesn't run true much. Also when it did get bit it didn't hook up well.

From: Michael: Lyman, SC 10/27/21

Comments: This is an awesome bait with even better action. It looks realistic, swims realistically, and it has an awesome dead stop action. Berkley has really stepped up their game with this bait.
