Overview

Winner of the 2016 ICAST Best of Show Award, the Minn Kota Ultrex i-Pilot Trolling Motor is the industry’s first cable steer trolling motor with electronic assist steering and integrated GPS technology. Like power steering for your trolling motor, the electronic assist steering makes it easier to make steering adjustments, while still providing the positive feed back from the foot pedal that anglers love about traditional cable-steer motors. It also offers all the benefits of i-Pilot and GPS technology, including Spot-Lock, Record-A-Track, Cruise Control, Advanced Auto Pilot, and Co-Pilot features.

The new i-Pilot remote (included) offers improved functionality and enhanced durability. Its 20-percent larger LCD screen and function icons, its overall slimmer, more ergonomic design, and its easy-access battery compartment all combine to improve visibility and handling.

Among i-Pilot's many features, Spot-Lock works like an electronic anchor, holding the boat in place. If the boat drifts more than five feet from the Spot-Lock location, i-Pilot will activate the trolling motor to keep the boat on the designated spot. It automatically corrects for wind, waves, current and drift. The "recall" feature for Spot-Lock provides the ability to return to that specific location at a later time.  (Stores up to six Spot-Lock locations)

The Record-A-Track feature allows an entire fishing track, up to a remarkable two miles in length, to be stored to memory (up to six separate tracks). When you want to retrace a course in either direction, i-Pilot’s playback functions will automatically guide your boat along the track.

The i-Pilot’s Cruise Control maintains real-time on-the-water boat speed in one-tenth mile-per-hour increments. This precise speed control allows the angler to dial in bait presentations in trolling applications.

The Advanced AutoPilot feature utilizes GPS technology to maintain the boat path on a true heading while adjusting for wind, waves, current and side-drift. This results in improved and more accurate tracking compared to traditional compass-based systems. CoPilot is Minn Kota’s wireless trolling motor control system and is integrated into the i-Pilot remote control. It allows you to control speed and steering from anywhere in the boat.

Please Note: These models are not available for order outside of the United States.

Comments: Ultrex came with my new boat. I had a ghost on my old boat. Gave this motor 3 months to get over using the ghost. Immediately after 3 months were up I pulled it off and went back to the ghost. There really isn't any comparison between the ghost and ultrex. Not saying the ultrex is a bad motor, it is the best minn kota motor to date by a long shot.

From: Ryan: Greers ferry 7/6/22

Comments: This motor is a game-changer and a fantastic upgrade from my Fortrex. I have had it for 6 months or so now and put 100+ hours on it. Here's the juice: If you DO NOT have the appropriate wiring and/or receptacle for this motor's power requirements you will think that you got a lemon or that the Ultrex is a POS. Be prepared to rewire your boat if it isn't set up to deliver the required voltage/amperage. The manual is VERY SPECIFIC about what you need at a minimum for different lengths of power cable runs. Heed their recommendations and you will LOVE this motor.

From: Steve: Medford, OR 1/26/22

Comments: I replaced my old motorguide tour with the 24v 45" shaft ultrex.  It has exceeded my expectations in every way possible.  I love this thing...spotlock works flawlessly...haven't had a single issue with it.

Comments: You see negative reviews on motors with Spotlock fairly often. Dont let these steer your decision. For the average angler, GPS anchoring opens to the door to much more efficiency on the water. Not sitting on the pedal all day in rough conditions or current is also far more efficient on your batteries. These motors come with caveats however. They are current sensitive in terms of power. They really need 6 guage plus wire and a receptacle with a 60amp rating. The motor servos will lag on turning response if you dont have a consistent power supply. And if you hammer down the motor at 80-100% thrust with a overmatched receptacle, the motor will automatically shut down to keep from burning up the boards. This motor is basically a navigation computer with a motor attached, it has safeguards to keep you from frying it with excessive heat buildup. So if you buy one and your boat is older than say 2012 (or if it's a entry model like a Tracker), know that you may very well need to upgrade your TM power supply wires and plug (or exnay the plug for something like an Anderson powerpole connector). That done, they are reliable and great investments that can help you become a more efficient angler.

Comments: What a piece of junk, and poor customer service. Took my father on vacation several hundred miles from home. This thing has broken down on me for the third time. Called customer service and they was no help. Don't waste your money on this junk. Time for a Ghost.

From: Lester: Belle Center 6/22/20

Comments: Had my 112 36 volt 45  Ultrex on my Triton TR20 HP. You better look at the Lowrance or Garmin before you buy this piece of junk. I'm not a tournament fisherman and don't fish every day. Probably about 20 trips a year. This thing has quit 3 times. I take care of my equipment so abuse is not the issue. This motor has internal problems. And by the looks of the reviews, I'm not the only one that has had issues.

Comments: Disappointed in this purchase. Ordered the Ultrex 45" I pilot with universal sonar. Shipping was fast, but box was mildly damaged. I inspected the product after unboxing it and every thing looked okay. I installed the motor with no problems. Instructions were straight forward. First day on the lake, I noticed that the motor had a "growl" to it. Much more noticable than my previous fortrex. After about 20 minutes of use, the motor quit working. It would only work in certain directions and at certain speeds. If you turned the motor fast, I noticed that it would work for a second then it would stop. Checked all the batteries and they were good. I called Minn Kota, and they said I have to take it to a dealer to get it serviced which was over 2 hours from me. I dropped off the motor and he expects to have it over a week for repairs. Also out of the box, the cable clamp pulled off of the cable from trying to lift the motor ONCE. I tried to reinstall it but noticed that the Allen screws that held it in place were stripped. Poorly made product for sure. I am definitely not satisfied with this purchase.

Comments: Purchased 112 ultrex 45 inch shaft in June 2018 have used it for six months with no problems really USA game changer with the spot lock feature. When fishing offshore or on a windy day it makes your life so much simpler, your fish catches will go up. A little pricey but if your fishing budget can handle it you won't be sorry. Great product

From: Mark: Okeechobee, FL 1/8/19

Comments: Works as advertised and is basically plug and play when upgrading from a Fortrex. The learning curve is negligible and as another user stated it doesn't eat up your batteries.

From: Rudy: Belleville IL  11/6/18

Comments: Disappointed with the Ultrex is an understatement.  Purchased the 80 lb 42" shaft and after only one trip of light use, the motor stopped working.  The reason... water intrusion in the lower unit.  After researching online, it is becoming a common problem.  Seriously, if you are going to charge over $2000 for a piece of marine electronics, it better be waterproof!  Now let me say that I have been using Minn Kota trolling motors for the past decade and the Fortrex was great.  The problem is that there is no longer any quality control at Minn Kota, at least with the Ultrex.  They are slapping these things together and sending them out without any oversight.  With my motor, I took it to an ASC in my area, and two weeks later it was repaired.  The water intrusion was occurring where the shaft met the lower unit.  The technician had to replace the shaft and several internal components.  Yes, it was all covered by the warranty, but I shouldn't have to use the warranty after only one fishing trip.  Unfortunately, with the Ultrex, there is a good chance you don't get what you pay for.  I seriously believe that 25-30% of these motors are lemons.  Buyer beware.  When you have to qualify a statement that "The Ultrex is a game changer, when it works" then it really isn't a game changer.

Comments: Recently purchased ultrex 112 i-Pilot used it 3 days bass fishing by myself and it was awesome one day it was fairly windy. It held  my ranger z 520c within a couple of feet while I was measuring fish, retying or just casting.  It really is agame changer.

From: Unknown 8/2/18

Comments: Got a ultrex and a year later foot pedal froze up and is a nightmargood morning to get the thing fixed, they send you to dealers and they throw parts at it until it works. Not happy to spend 2300$ for a trolling motor that the pedal is locked up on, when it works itË™s awesome but I hope they really get the bugs worked out of this thing.

From: Zach: Holly springs nc  6/19/18

Comments: Still lots of bugs to be worked out on these. I bought the 112# without link and the laundry list of problems keeps getting longer. First trip out, the pedal switch wouldn't turn the motor off when you let off of it...easy fix but frustrating. 2nd issue, spot lock would work okay for a few minutes then kick off randomly, again...easy fix but frustrating. 3rd and current issue; when spot locked, the unit over compensates for corrections and throws the front of the boat back and forth and never settles down. Extremely aggravated with it....mk customer service has been great in trying to help but i feel for $2400+, the unit leaves a lot to be desired. Its annoyingly loud also.

Comments: This trolling motor changes the way you fish.  It will improve your fishing.  The power steering does take a bit of learning because it is so sensitive, but after that learning curve you will be amazed at how effortlessly you operate it.  It drastically reduces stress on my back and legs compared to my old unit.  Spot lock is a neat trick too.  Works well in a breeze.  Not as well on a calm day, although it does hold you in the general area.  It just moves around a little more. The power is very linear and the roll in is very smooth.  It won't hit you will full power instantly and throw you out of the boat. Battery life is exceptional! I was worried that with the additional features that battery charge would suffer.  Not the case at all.  Minn Kota has outdone themselves in this instance. Overall, it is well worth the purchase price, in my opinion. I've had no issues with this unit.  It has worked perfectly for nearly a year.  And I fish regularly.

From: Rick: Shuqualak, Ms 4/11/18

Comments: Slightly bigger than the TRDs. Nice colors. Still prefer zman but these are a good alternative when you need a different look.

From: Unknown 3/31/18

Comments: New Ultrex pedal doesn't fit in the original comfortroll recessed foot pedal tray that fit fine with the Fortrex 101.  So, add another $150 to the install price plus the joy of cutting a larger hole in the front of the boat.  Disappointing.  Can't wait to try it after it's installed.

From: Rob: Midland, TX 3/3/18

Comments: Not had any problems like a couple of other reviewers.  Bought 03/2017 and have used on water 30+ days.  It's the real deal.  I have a Z21 and a 52" 36 V Ultrex.   It keeps me spot on even in wind up to 15+ (maybe more but I don't like to get out there when it's 20 plus!)  The power steering foot control is a little hard to get used to because it is so sensitive, but after a few hours it's like you've been using it your whole life.  Many days I have hit the spot lock button and gone to the back of the boat, sat in the seat, and fished out of the back while the mystery man holds me right on the point.

POSITIVES:  power assist on stow and deploy (like other Minn Kotas); ramp up and down when you're on high speed keeps from throwing your buddy out of the boat; quiet; powerful; energy efficient; spot lock works spot on; remote is nice but I've not used much; built in sonar works well (need adapter cable for Lowrance/Humminbird/etc);
NEGATIVES:  sometimes hit button on accident; cable pull to deploy motor pulls on exiting wires/assembly and can pull them out (real pain getting back in) so I've learned to make straight pull to unlatch and then deploy.
Overall it has been a wonderful tool and has helped me to catch more fish with a whole lot less effort.  I highly recommend it but would not give up my power poles for shallow water!

From: Richard - San Antonio, TX 12/23/17

Comments: its awesome when it works...spot lock feature stopped working after the 4th fishing trip and now pedal is stuck..I'd wait until Minn Kota fixes all their bugs until purchasing one

From: Unknonwn 9/3/17

Comments: To bad i spent 2200 dollars to have a cable break 34 days later. Unreal! Im pissed.

From: Greencastle 3/27/17

Comments: This trolling motor is the freaking deal.   Screw $4k in power poles, this is like getting an 80 lb thrust trolling motor plus INFINITE depth power poles plus cruise control and record a track to go back over rip rap if you had a nice run over it cranking squarebills for example.   Coolest technical advancement in fishing in decades.   A steal at $2200 in my opinion.   I laugh at guys with power poles and talons now, no joke. You can stay right on a ledge or hump deep cranking in 30 or 40 feet in 30 mph eons
Winds.   A game changer for tournament fishing edge.   While they're stuck with power poles in 12 feet with jigs and squarebills, I'll be out catching the hogs on deep cranks, swimbaits and c rigs out deep.
