Comments: Penn Battle III 4000 --I own and have used the Penn Battle and Pen Battle II in the 4000 size and have been quite pleased with them, so when this new "Improved" model became available I purchased a few to use on our Alaska salmon fishing charters. The Battle III definitely has a smoother feel -- and like my other Penns feels solid -- the drag is great. I do however have two issue with this reel: 1: it has a light bail spring that on one of my reels does not fully close at times. This has definitely caused guests to miss fish, and also caucused line tangles with the 30 # braids I typically use on these reels. 2nd issue is that the line clip on the spool is difficult to use successfully -- and take an unreasonable amount of time to secure the line. I am definitely a Penn fan, however, I offer this critique with the hopes that both of these issues may be improved. Even though this reel has a more solid and smoother action --- I prefer my older Battle and Battle II models which have more solid bail springs and easier to use line clips. When guiding fishing trips on a professional basis it is better to have a reel that is more foolproof.

Comments: Pro's : I can't say enough good things about Penn reels. I have about a dozen of the from a ultra light 4200, now discontinued, two 550's , and a bevy of Battle III's and II's. for the money, the Battle series is the best reel out there. If needed, parts are readily available for all but the oldest of reels. Even spare spool assemblies are available ! Try to find parts, even spools, for many reels in this price range ! I bet you can't ! Con's ; The reel stem on the Battle III seems a little short for my XL hands, but I'm nit-picking. Upon further inspection, it does line up well with the rod eyes on the rod. I'm old school, and was raised on spinning reels with an anti-reverse on/off switch. On rare occasions I will back reel on a fish. The Battle III line does not offer this feature. The Battle II 2500 had this feature, but was deleted on the 2500 Battle III . Summary ; Buy any Penn reel with confidence. A dependable and reliable reel that will give years of service, and fishing fun !

Comments: Reel is robust with a smooth action. It came well lubed with the signature blue Penn grease. Paired with a 7.6 Fenwick HMG inshore. Looking forward to many years of service.

Comments: High quality reel at a great price, that's why I bought 2

Comments: For the $100 price range it's a good reel. Smooth and a good solid consistent drag. It is heavier than other reels in the same price range and will effect the balance of your rod. If you have a nose-heavy rod this may be a good fit.

Comments: Bought one and it feels great! Built extremely solid and drag is very smooth. Best reel for the price as of now and line lay is better than both of my Diawa BGs. Will stick with Penn for spinning and Shimano for baitcasters. Not the lightest but not heavy.
