A true powerhouse-of-a-reel, the Shimano Tranx Casting Reels employ Shimano’s signature HAGANE, X-Ship, and HEG technologies, providing massive cranking power with every silky-smooth turn of the handle.

Whether you’re targeting trophy largemouth or peacock bass, the Shimano Tranx Casting Reel boasts CoreProtect technology, which ensures long-lasting performance in the harshest environments. Championing the “big baits catch big bass” mantra, the Shimano Tranx Casting Reels packs an astounding 22lbs of drag (with the 5.8:1 model) into a low profile, ergonomic package, making it the reel-of-choice for large baits.

Maintaining all of the tough-as-nails attributes that have earned its larger predecessors a reputation for reliability in the saltwater market, the Shimano Tranx Casting Reels provide bulletproof performance that sets the bar in terms of raw power and durability.

Glide bait reelNothing better than Shimano. I thought it would come with the double handle but I am stoked with the single handle.

Shimano Tranx 300I was Sceptic at first about the hype of this reel... must say the moment I made my first cast I was In love with it and it has been my go-to reel ever since.

DisappointedJust got my Tranx 300AHG last night and returning it today. The big non handle is just too awkward to use. Wish they made paddle handle for this reel, now I gotta find another swimbait reel.

ReelThis is a great reel for throwing bigger swinbaits.

Comments: Tranx 300 Power handle hands down is the best swimbait reel that money can buy. Casting distance is phenomenal ( I am using 80lb quatro ), the power handle fits great in the hand and really helps grind the fish. If you are getting into swimbaiting, just buy this reel, its not too expensive and its worth it weight in gold...

From: Will: Indiana 9/20/23

Comments: Fantastic big bait reel Freshwater big baits, 300 size is awesome.

From: Scott: Upstate Ny 8/20/23

Comments: Bought the Tranx 401A to throw freshwater swimbaits and eventually for salt water fishing when I retire to Florida. Disappointed with the free play in the reel when you spun it. Even after adjustment, it spun poorly. Doubt the reel could ever achieve adequate casting distance. Have read similar reviews citing poor casting distance in the Tranx 300 & 400 reels. Don't think I'm alone here on this critique. Returned reel .

From: Nels: VA 4/25/23

Comments: Great reel for muskies! Replacing Calcuttas with Tranx 400A and I am happy I made the transition. Buttery smooth retrieval and drag. Casts bucktails, rubber, topwaters, and cranks a country mile.

From: Chad: Wisconsin 4/9/23

Comments: I heard a lot of good things about these so when I put together a swimbait/striper rig I went with the 400. Very unimpressed with the casting distance and the sloppy drag and worm gear. I'm lucky if it casts a 4oz swimbait about 15 yards on an 8 ft iRod. Already paid to have it cleaned and adjusted and I'm still not happy with it for the money spent.

From: Steve: IL 11/6/22

Comments: I bought the 5.8:1 gear ratio. Don't be fooled by that number. It takes up 30 inches per crank, which is the same amount of line as a 7 speed Metanium. I was surprised by how smooth and refined feeling this reel was. Absolutely butter smooth. It handles big baits well of course. It's the gold standard for big swimbaits. It holds a ton of big line. I highly recommend it!

From: Chris : Cincinnati Ohio 11/5/22

Comments: I own the 300hg and the 400a model. I use both of these for striped bass in the congaree river in south carolina. They are the best big fish casting reels I have found. Which you can't go wrong with anything shimano. I throw 6-7 inch paddletails on 1-2 oz jigheads into rapids. If you know stripers, you know they fight pretty hard. Add their already hard fight with extremely fast current and it makes for some wore out arms pretty fast. But these reels handle them perfectly. As long as shimano continues to make the tranx, it will be the only big fish reel I will buy!

From: Eric: Lexington, S.C. 5/22/22

Comments: I bought 2 of these reels specifically for swimbait fishing in Mexico. This reel was recommended in a video from Matt Allen (TacticalBassin) specifically for fishing large swimbaits. I was extremely impressed with the durability, the smoothness of casting and reeling, and the pure strength of these reels. I caught 6 bass between 7lbs and 7lbs 10 oz, and I was able to "Tranx" those fish right to the net. I'm very happy with my purchase.

From: Mike: Eads, TN 4/13/22

Comments: These are great reels. I try to always use appropriate reels, but an unrelated failure forced me to do things with the 400 and even a Bantam that aren't close to appropriate for level winds in either of these two size ranges. I only knocked the leveler off it's track once on the 400 while bringing halibut up from over 500 feet. It pushed back on and has been fine since. Even after this experience, I wouldn't risk grinding hard on any level wind with over 20lbs of drag fully in use. It's much safer to let the rod do most of the lifting and share in the fish pressuring work. The double paddle handles allow for ample torque without false engagements during casts. Spool control is very adequate for heavy lures and floats on eight and ten foot rods. I haven't had any reason to throw light lures into heavy winds. The bearing count is plenty for this class of real and they are corrosion resistant.

From: KC: Oregon 2/24/22

Comments: Have a couple 300s and a 400, and they have been phenomenal the last couple years. They have been through heavy use with big swimbaits and umbrella rigs for striper and bass and have still stayed very quiet considering I've never cleaned or done maintenance on them. I like the fast line pickup the HG offers at 40 per turn. I changed the single power handle on my HG to a regular handle which can be bought on Shimano's part site. The Tranx is a little expensive but worth the investment for bigger applications, great reels!

From: Jacob: Nacogdoches, TX 1/5/22

Comments: Nice reel. But on the 301 with power crank, it does accidently engage on the cast when the handle is in the 7-12 position. Hoping the regular handle fixes the problem. Also, if you are pulling big bucktails, get the lower gear ratio.

From: Vernon: Cedar Rapids, IA 10/9/21

Comments: This is an excellent reel. I have replaced the Daiwa Lexa with the Tranx 301's and 401's on all of my musky rods. Very quiet and super smooth with a solid feel and smooth drag. They handle everything from twitch baits to deep diving cranks with ease. I only wish they offered choice of handle on the HG's.

From: JG: State College, PA 9/22/21

Comments: I was looking for a reel to throw 10XD's and Azuma's on my Megabass Launcher without getting worn out. I had previously been using a Daiwa Zillion crazy cranker and although it cast a mile and has a very smooth retrieve, it just struggles to grind a deep diver for a few hours. The Tranx 300 is a bit heavier but holds a ton of line and casts a bit farther than the Daiwa once dialed in. I put it on the Launcher and cranked for 3 hours, then swapped it to my Dobyns champion XP 806 CB and finished the day on that. I am thoroughly impressed with this reel and very happy I bought it. I will most likely pick up another one so I can have both deep cranking rods set up the same. Way to go Shimano.

From: James: Pennsylvania 8/21/21

Comments:I love this reel. I have a Lexa 400 which is also amazing, but this one is just so much smoother and more compact. Just buy it. You won't regret it.

From: Jesse: Santa Clarita, CA

Comments: I now have three of these! As others have said, this is the best swimbait reel currently on the market for a lower profile baitcaster. I've had two for over three years and they're still perfect.

From: Byron: Columbia, TN 2/6/21

Comments: I fish with the high end curados and I bought this reel to throw 6 oz. large swimbaits. It works like a charm ! I can throw those baits a country mile.

From: Tom: Carlsbad, CA 2/2/21

Comments: By far the best swimbait reel out there if you have the money and want a reel that will last and can be used in saltwater the tranx 400 or 300 is by far the best I have my tranx 300 paired up with a phenix ultra swimbait rod and my 400 with a phenix m1inshore and it's amazing best perches ever

From: Angelo: California 11/12/20

Comments: I use this paired with a 7'10" Heavy Avid X and 65# braid and a 25# mono leader to throw big swim baits and A-rigs. It works great for both. I'm going to take it south for some striper's and possibly some spoonbills this spring.

From: Aaron: Omaha, NE 11/11/20

Comments: This is a solid reel from Shimano. I purchased this one and the 401 in recent months.I am using them for Glide Baits due to their casting ability. The 201 is a little small but works well with smaller Glide baits such as R2S 168.However, if throwing 3oz - 5oz glides I would move to 301 or 401 series. The reel is solid built and ultra smooth - Great winch I need to roll the baits back to the boat.

From: Rich: Sandy, Oregon 10/22/20

Comments:I have the 401 HG paired with a dobyns 807 and use it for big swim baits. It is perfect for this roll casts and reels smooth. Didn't know how I'd feel about the power handle but have really started enjoying how it feels in hand. Would definitely recommend this.

From: Matt: Los Angeles, CA 10/7/20

Comments: Great reel. Love the power handle for burning big swimbaits

From: Matt: Fredericksburg, VA 9/30/20

Comments:Best big bait reel there is on the market. I was a long time user of the Calcutta for musky and pike fishing and these have replaced all of my DC. As smooth as shimanos $300+ smaller reels, casts even light baits a mile, and could tow a car out of the ditch it has so much power. There is no reason in my opinion to even consider the Diawa and abu reels in this category, I have owned them all and the tranx is seriously on another level. If you want to fish for truly powerful fish with big baits, this reel is the way to go.

From: Brendan: Rochester, Minnesota 6/29/20

Comments:Stay away, we purchased 37 shimano tranx 300-500 reels for our surface iron fishing season, every single one failed. The drag is so sloppy I've never seen anything like it.

From: Hunter: California 12/30/19

Comments:DEEP! Spool.. Can hold a ton of line.. Very light.. Compared to the Calcutta Conquest, If you are considering this or the Calcutta conquest for casting Big Baits. You can't go wrong either way. I wish there was some additional spool options, because I would love a shallow spool for deep diving oversized crankbaits.

From: NV: Maine 10/18/19

Comments:Paired a Tranx 400a 5.8:1 on a Low Down Customs XH (3-8oz) swimbait rod. Have thrown everything from Islide 185's and 262's, Deps 175's, 6 and 8" Hudds, Working Class Zero Citizens with 1/2oz belly weights to hand made Rafa Customs and Phoney Frog shad glides in the 4-6oz range on 20lb AbrazX fluro, 30lb Big Game mono and 100lb Power Pro braid with AbrazX 80lb fluro leader.s This reel is built to handle big baits for big fish. I'd go so far as to say it feels almost as smooth as my Metanium DC and every bit as smooth as my Curado DC. No slop or play in the handle, spool or gears. Enough drag to pull a stump off the bottom if your line will holld up. The heavier the bait it seems like it casts and retrieves even smoother. Paired with a HawgTech handle it's comfortable enough to throw all day long with no fatigue to your hand or fingers. Your arms and wrists are another story, but that's not the reels fault! Compared to my Curado 300e, it feels even more balanced and ergonomic enoughto not even notice it's 12oz weight, which I was very skeptical of prior to purchasing. (I'm used to the 6-8oz range in reel weight.) I'm a die hard Shimano fan and while even I have to admit Diawa and MegaBass make some really nice gear, if your planning on throwing soft or hard swimbaits of any size or weight, the Tranx line of reels is the smartest addition you will ever make to your arsenal. It has almost seemed unfair to the fish how easily this thing has winched them in when I've pinned them!

From:Unknown: Indianpolis 6/24/19

Comments:Received my 400 Tranx. Its a beast. If you're into big swimbaits this is the reel.I have a couple of Shimano Conquest 300 & 400.Awesome reels also but I think I like the Tranx better.Don't let the gear ratios make you over think. The 5.8 gear ratio retrieves 30'' per crank. It's not slow.I put the Tranx 400 on a custom Moam Maniac XL rod built by Cam.Cam put a balancer on the rod.The balance point with the Tranx 400 is right at the reel seat.Awesome set up. The Tranx throws a bait as light as 2oz with ease and a bait as heavy as 8 - 12oz just as easy.Just a beast for beast bass.

From:Mike: Harrison 6/20/19

Comments:These reels are amazing... HOWEVER if you get a 300 with a power handle. Remove the power handle and throw it in the garbage.... the Power handle knob is so heavy that if the knob is in a 7-12 clock position, a hard overhand cast will turn the handle and engage the reel, resulting in your swimbait going straight into the depths of the lake. OR if your using braid - bye-bye gears and drag. Favorite reel ever however disclaimer...

From:Thomas: Livermore, CA 6/18/19

Comments:Bought the 300A for large swimbaits. Have thrown everything from 6in Hudds to Deps 250s on this thing andit handles all of the baits wonderfully. It is currently rigged on a Dobyns 867 with 20lb Sniper for big glidebaits and performs exceptionally well. Casts a 250 far no problem and is an incredibly powerful reel when fighting fish. Planning to get the Tranx 200 for the smaller swimbaits but for now, this reel is doing both. Highly recommend the Tranx 300 for big swimbaits/a-rigs.

From: Andrew:MA5/16/19

Comments:I've both the 300 & 400 .. simply awesome reels - I could go & on but won't - just trust me - buy one - you won't regret it - don't even buy another because the price is cheaper - long run you'll regret it . TRANX is where it's at .!!

From: Dean:Las Vegas Nevada 10/31/18

Comments:First thing you need to do is make a tether for the side plate. Check tackle advisors video on youtube about it. Other than the side plate thing this reel is awesome, super powerfull, smooth, great drag. I love the power handle and the faster gear ratio option. This reel also has a ton of seals to prevent water intrusion which is great for saltwater and kayakers! I use 85lb braid to 30-40lb mono leader for big striped bass and pair it up with a dobyns DC 807 MAG HSB swimbait rod and I couldn't be happier.

From: Geo:California9/29/18

Comments:Got the 301HG awesome reel super powerful but the knob from the power handle just came off while I was walking down river so I called shimano and they said they cant do anything unless I have the peices with me so they can check why it came off but it fell in the river so they cant replace it which sucks but other than that awesome reel

From:Joshua: Fresno 8/27/18

Comments:I purchased the 400 size reel in late winter for a 7'11", 3-8oz swimbait rod I built and it has been fantastical. It's easy to adjust, casts great, and is super smooth. The largest fish (as of today) has been a 5lb'er on a 3oz Alabama rig. It was a piece of cake getting this fish to the boat. I would definitely recommend and I'll be buying a 300 next, 400 will become a designated saltwater combo.

From: Mike:Ga8/18/18

Comments:got the 401, love it. big swimbaits no problem. Smooth casting. For the price 10/10

From: Unknonwn 5/19/18

Comments:Got the 301 tranx. Been killing sturgeon with it. Really good reel.

From:Unknown - CA 12/25/17

Comments:got the 5.8 left and used it for my 8 inch huds! it handles and cast like a dream and its so smooth!! as per tacticalbassin recommendation for big swimbaits! if you are planning on getting a swimbait specific reel and looking at the cardif just save a little more bec its just a better reel overall its $150 more but its night and day diffrence!

From: Armyn - Covington, GA 11/30/17

Comments:Cast like a dream. More power than you can imagine. By far, the best bass fishing reel made. Large line capacity equals longer cast. If you get one.... you will get more.

From: JB: Georgetown Ky 9/13/17

Comments:I use this reel offshore for casting jigs to big fish. It makes quick work of 40+ lb cobia, smooth drag and solid feel. The 400 is very versatile on lure weight also.

From: Pescador 7/31/17

Comments:Got my 400AHG before our annual Canadian Musky Trip. Used it for a week and it was great. Casts a mile and the speed was great. The round handle is so comfortable. I was questioning it, when looking at the pictures but it is now my favorite reel handle. Could pull double 10s will little problem. Great reel and will get another before next years trip. I will use for all my blades including Musky spinner-baits.

From: Toim: Iowa 7/17/17

Comments:Just got my 300A on Thursday from Musky Shop. Tried it for the first time yesterday on a Mojo Musky MM80MHF rod. I threw a 2oz. spinnerbait and smaller double-bladed buck tail with it. Gets these larger lures in faster than the Revo Toro NACL60 I was using previously with no extra effort. 5.8:1 gear makes it easy to pull small blades yet the 30" retrieve allows for better speed than the Revo. Love it! And FYI, the 300A is not much bigger than a bass reel, in my opinion. I'll be using this setup primarily for pike but it will do well throwing larger swimbaits for bass as well.

From: Eric: Glastonbury, CT 6/10/17

Comments:Received my TRANX 301E from Tackle direct this week used it sat for the first time and it didn't let me down very smooth and great casting this reel was put onto my Ian Miller Beastmaster casting rod and compliments it perfectly great Reel Shimano.

From: Phillip Lyons. Mackay,Queensland, Australia 4/22/17

Comments:I have the bigger version 4 saltwater GREAT REEL freshwater not my choice held the smaller version 4 freshwater it ridiculously heavy but I think ill buy 1. For a big swimbait setup

From: Unknown 3/21/17

Comments:This reel is amazing I use it for saltwater I matched it up with a 8ft xh for some top water action for really big striped bass need more!!!! A$AP

From: Rafael - San Francisco, CA 3/13/17

Comments:I got the reel in today and paired it with a Dobyns Campion 764. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome setup, but I'm used to using only Steez sized reels and this one weighs the same as 2 of those. I'm confident this will be a great swimbait & a-rig setup, but I will have to get used to the heavier weight. I'll update again in a few months with a better review... just thought it would be good for those finesse fishermen to think about the weight before you drop the $$$.

From:JR -North GA 3/10/17

Comments:I picked one up at Thorne brothers in Minnesota I won't be using it for bass because it's for my muskie rod but with 40 inches per crank it's a super fast reel, personally I wouldn't want to go bigger than the 300 size for bass I bought the 400 for muskie and will for sure be buying another!!
