Initial Thoughts
The new Shimano Outlier Series swimbait rods deliver an impressive blend of lightweight performance and big-bait power. Right out of the gate, the first thing you notice is how incredibly light these rods feel in hand — even the 8' Heavy model fishes more like a 7'3" medium-heavy jig rod. This means you can throw swimbaits all day long without fatigue, even when paired with a Tranx 300.
What We Noticed
Blank Technology
- Built with Shimano’s Spiral X carbon fiber wrapped blank, the Outlier loads effortlessly on the cast, letting the rod do much of the work for you.
Cosmetics
- The split-grip handle features a unique, high-quality EVA foam with a subtle spiral texture for a secure, comfortable hold all day long.
- A standout detail is the heavy-duty hook keeper mounted on the back of the rod. Unlike the flimsy keepers found on many swimbait sticks, this one is built to handle the torque and stress of big baits and heavy line without bending or breaking.
Additional Observations
- Shimano also nailed the lure and line ratings — something that’s often off-mark in swimbait rods. Each model comfortably handles its full rated range, giving you confidence in your setup without guesswork.
Conclusion
At around $349, the Shimano Outlier offers premium technology, precision ratings, and Shimano’s renowned build quality — all while staying well under the $500+ price tag of many custom swimbait rods. If you’re in the market for a swimbait stick that’s light, accurate, and tournament-ready, the Outlier Series deserves a serious look.
What Customers Are Saying
"It’s extremely hard to find a rod that likes to throw a 10 inch mag draft and throws it well. The 8’0 XH does it perfectly, loads great, makes casting easy, ultra sensitive, and keeps them pinned better than any other rod I’ve paired with the big mag. Definitely Worth the price tag."

Best Rod!! Best high end rod!! These compete with the GLX. IMO they are better. A step up from the Expride B and we know how good those are!!
