Overview

Designed by B.A.S.S. Elite Series Pro Brett Hite, the Zako Swimbait joins the ranks of Yamamoto’s legendary line of soft plastic baits.  Its segmented body and forked tail allow it to excel as a vibrating jig trailer, and its split-belly makes it a great choice for weedless Texas-rigging.  The Zako also features a large-belly baitfish profile that perfectly mimics bluegill and shad, while also giving you more plastic to feed onto a jig-hook.  Available in a wide range of Yamamoto’s signature colors, the Zako Swimbait is sure to be a staple in every angler’s box.

Comments: While a good trailer option for the chatterbait , I find the 3" size often too small (even with the Chatterbait Mini-Max) while the 4" size to be only suited for the larger standard size chatterbait as a trailer . Yamamoto would sell a lot more if they developed a 3.5" Zako as that would be the ideal , most versatile size .

From: Luther: Georgia 3/1/23

Comments: These are amazing with a weightless Texas rig. U can use them like a fluke or u can walk them on top sort of like a hollow body frog.

From: Unknown: Californa 2/12/23

Comments: These are great! U can use them as a trailer a fluke and a topwater. On a weightless hook u can walk them on the surface almost like a frog.

From: Unknown: California 2/12/23

Comments: This is a good chatterbait trailer but it only lasts for a few fish. We think the z-man chatterbait trailer is a far better value.

From: Blake: TX 12/22/22

Comments: Most people use this bait as a Chatterbait trailer but I use this bait for many different techniques that the fish have never seen. I flip this into heavy vegetation to mimic a bluegill and i rig it on a Carolina rig to mimic Shad hunkering to the bottom. Both of these techniques have caught lots of fish for me so don't be afraid to try something different once in a while.

From: Unknown: Kentucky 7/14/21

Comments: This is my go to chatterbait trailer. It has a tight but very realistic swimming action and is quite durable for a Yamamoto plastic. It's more subtle action makes sure it doesn't counteract the heavy vibration of a Jackhammer chatterbait.

From: Tyler: Grand Junction, CO 6/20/20

Comments: Great Soft plastic, no one should be complaining about durability on these because they simply last. Ive used these on a chatter bait, swim jig, and scrounger. The durability, again, is pretty good for a Yamamoto plastic. I will use these until they simply won't stay on the hook anymore from being bitten so much. I've caught several fish on one plastic all ranging between 2-5 lbs and they still work great. I recommend giving them a try, im not a Yamamoto guy but this is the one Yamamoto thing I DO buy.

From: Connor: NYS 5/5/20

Comments: Yamamoto makes some top of line plastics, the price is worthy. I don't care if I only catch one bass per bait, totally fine with me. What matters is a bait that works and does not have you fishing for hours with nothing to show. Zakos flat out work and that's really all that matters. On a budget? Fish yum plastics.

From: Dean: Las Vegas, NV 2/17/20

Comments: Here is a review from a non-cranky person: these are rad. They add good weight, bulk, and stay on with a little superglue. Every review of every Yamamoto bait has a guy crying about durability... dude, they are very fragile baits, you gotta pay to play! Buy something else if this makes you emotional. All Yamamoto baits slay fish, the Zako does too. It's best use is as a trailer... remember that.

From: Unknown: 11/7/19

Comments: Very overrated, as is the Jackhammer Chatterbait everyone is blabbing about. Tested this along with friends on a body of water where the bass feed on nothing but big shad, bluegill, crappie, frogs and yellow perch. This bait should have gotten destroyed. I threw a Revenge Viberator with a Zoom Horny Toad in a Bluegill like color pattern. Caught 6 bass with the largest coming in at 6.22 pounds. Other friend threw a regular Chatterbait with a Zoom Super Fluke. Again, bluegill. Caught 4 bass. Largest 3.76. The Jackhammer with the Zako in bluegill caught 3 bass. Largest 4.01. We did this a few days. The Zako consistently gets outperformed. Just put something else BIG on a vibrating jig. The only consistent we found was that the Revenge Viberator outfished Chatterbait.

From: Matt: Philadelphia 9/19/19

Comments: The Zako is my primary chatterbait trailer. The chatterbait is always good, but it flat out excels during shad spawns or fishing vegetation where panfish play a forage role. This is not the only bait I throw per se. I will switch up to a craw style trailer when you need to crawl the bait during early prespawn, and  a Keitech swimbait gets the call if I need the bait to ride higher. More often than not though, it's the Zako doing the work. I've had good durability overall with this bait. Yes, you will occasionally lose a tail or the back half to overzealous biters. I average 3-4 fish a piece, and most of the time you can use some Mend It to recycle a few. Typically the head and back will split open, but the plastic formula that Yamamoto uses here is not salt-laden like a Senko. It responds very well to soft bait glues like Mend It. Even so, I usually get 15-20 fish per pack. Lots of tour pros (and prostaffers ) will rave about the Razor Shad, but side by side the Zako has been far more productive.

From: Christopher: Lancaster 9/18/19

Comments: This is probably my #2 chatterbait trailer of all time.  If where you fish has bulky bait (Gizzard shad, bluegill, etc.), the Zako will hammer them.  If you have a lot of very skinny bait (minnows, smelt, some shiner), it doesn't seem to work as well and you'll need a thinner trailer.  There's only one other bait I like better, but so far Berkley has discontinued it.  But if you want to catch the biggest bass on a chatterbait in the area, this is a pretty consistent producer.

From: Sean: Centennial, CO 8/10/18

Comments: Been using these with the jackhammer chatterbait  and the results for me have been impressive. Great size and it adds the perfect amount of weight to keep the jackhammer down in the water column.  Have landed many nice size bass and even some very aggressive walleye at night. I believe the mistake many people make is working these to fast. I have found a slow steady retrieve to be best. Will be buying more of these.  Give them a try.

From: Mark: Muskego, Wisconsin  7/6/18

Comments: best trailer for a chatter bait ever. i really like these a lot but i cant stand getting these out of the bag and they're all kinked up and twisted . is it too much to ask to get some clam-shell style packaging for what these cost. still , on a jack hammer these are awesome

From: Nick - Mesquite, TX 6/14/18

Comments: this bait behind a jackhammer is absolute money

From: Anthony: Fl 5/14/18

Comments: Ok, I know it's a terrible thing to say anything bad about Yamamoto baits but the Zako cost me 4 fish tonight while night fishing...One was a monster. There just isn't enough gap on this high sided profile bait. I had it rigged up on a 1/2oz Jack Hammer and was throwing it on a Dobyns Champion 736 glass Chatterbait rod...I know how to set the hook. One fish ok but 4?! That ain't me...these fish weren't slapping the bait as they do sometimes, they were mauling it and with the lack of gap, they were coming unbuttoned. I switched out the Zako for yes, another Yamamoto bait, a Hula Grub. I got 3 more bites and landed all 3, a 3lb11oz, 3lb.10oz and 3lb.8oz. Decent bass for northern ILL. I love the profile of the Zako and will modify my remaining baits to have more gap...but I shouldnt have to. Use unmodified at your own risk

From: Dave: Hoffman Estates 5/11/18

Comments: Threaded it onto a Z Man Chatterbait, I was surprised at how well the bait could skip.  That alone will put you into tight spots that will get you more and bigger bites

From: Ryan - California 4/21/18

Comments: Count me in as a dude that thinks these are groovy on a chatterbait. Tails will get bit off, so grab a few packs. They add weight to your bait (rhyme skills +1000) and help them sail extra far on the cast.

From: Jay6 4/13/18

Comments: subtle action! these are great in pressured conditions and cooler water. ALWAYS RIG ON A CHATTERBAIT. I have tried the jack hammer and every kind on tackle warehouse but the dest on for this is a FAT SACK TACKLE CHATTER BAIT these are very good because they kick out every once and a while and you will get smoked!! this set up caught me a tone of largemouth even a 7 at Lake Mohave. this pair is going to win some big money.

From: Blake: Las Vegas 2/1/18

Comments: BY FAR WITHOUT A SINGLE DOUBT THE BEST CHATTERBAIT TRAILER EVER! I was a little skeptical at first after reading some of the reviews, but I got them anyway and I'm sure glad I did. I used to use reaction innovations skinny dippers as my chatterbait trailer and now I use the zako and the results speak for themselves!

From: Anthony: FL 11/27/17

Comments: For the reviews that say it has no action are not using it as intended.  Myself and the guys I fish with use these and get hammered on them.  No they do not have action like a a swim trailer.  They were not intended to.  Put them on a Jack hammer chatter bait and hold on!!!  I have had from 1 lb to 5 lb smash these. Love the black and blue at night and a rainbow, Tennessee shad, or white on a white and chartreuse on bright sunny days.  Get some and hold on!!

From: Erin: Arizona 10/7/17

Comments: I love yamamoto products so I thought I'd buy some of these for my chatterbaits and I used them for the first time today but I don't really seem to get any action from these. I even rigged them upside down and still barely anything. Maybe I got a bad batch I don't know I still think keitech fat swimmers are the best trailers.

From: Javier: Greeley, Colorado 9/29/17

Comments: Great vibrating jig trailer which is exactly what it was designed for. Fantastic bait for it's intended purpose. It gets its movement from the vibration of the vibrating jig. If you're looking for a stand alone swim bait or swim jig trailer look elsewhere.

From: Chico: La 6/5/17

Comments: People need to realize what this bait was designed for. It's a chatterbait trailer. By far the best one out there. It's not meant to be anything other than that. But works great as a flipping bait as well

From: Unknown 5/26/17

Comments: Great baits but specifically meant for trailers on a Chatterbait. Works great

From: Will Simpson - Rock Hill, SC 4/21/17

Comments: These have a very specific purpose, and that is as a chatter bait trailer. The tail moves with the vibration of the blade, so it is a very faint, tight wiggle.  That being said, it is definitely one of the bet chatter bait trailers I have ever used.

From: Ashton: Texas 4/16/17

Comments: Awesome chatterbait trailer. Real life like action.

From: Will - Eufaula, AL 4/18/17

Comments: Great trailer for bladed jigs and buzz baits! Like others have said, it's not a standalone swimbait, or swim jig trailer. If that's what you're looking for, look elsewhere. But if you want what is, in my opinion, the best Chatterbait trailer on the market, the Zako might work for you. It certainly does for me!

From: John: Michigan 3/25/17

Comments: This bait is awesome on a chatter bait or scrounger head. Crazy Action and fish love it. Try it. Randy

From: Unknown - 3/10/17

Comments: Bought 1 pack to try them out and what a waste. I should have bought a pack of keitech swimbaits. These things have no action. They look good but dont work good! A 2$ pack of twin tails work better on a swimjig or chatterbait than this bait. Dont waste your money. Stick with what you know that works and Pass this bait up down the aisle. First true disappointed by yamamoto

From: Dave: Phoenix, Arizona 3/1/17

Comments: This bait is designed specifically as a trailer for a vibrating bait such as Vibrating jigs, buzzbaits, and spinnerbaits.  It has a very tight flicker action on the tail.  So if you are looking for a swimbait with a wide wobble stick with a paddletail.  But these do work excellent paired with chatterbaits.

From: Alex: Pensacola FL 2/3/17

Comments: Meh... maybe it's best behind a Chatterbait, but there was absolutely no tail action behind by swim jig. If you don't want any wobble of the tail on a swim jig, this is the bait. I thought for sure it would swim like the Lake Fork Hyper baits (which I don't care for either). Didn't try it behind a chatterbait yet, but we'll see. I think this is the first Yamamoto purchase made that I regret.

From: JR: Georgia: 1/5/17

Comments: This may be great behind a Chatterbait, but if you are looking to use it like a Keitech on a jig with a flapping tail action - look somewhere else. This thing is the straightest moving, non-wobbling jointed bait I've ever used. Maybe it's only to be used behind a Chatterbait, but it has absolutely no body movement on its own. A straight Senko has more action than this.

From: RE: 1/3/17

Comments: This bait has no action at all. I bought one bag and tried them on a swimbait head and a weighted swimbait hook. Neither one had any type of action or movement of the tail whatsoever. I was really disappointed. I thought the tail would have some kind of wiggle with the segmented sections but it didn't do a thing.
