Overview

Updated and better than ever, the Berkley Shock Casting Rods are specifically engineered to handle the most advanced superbraids, while providing an outstanding value. Working to accommodate the increased strength of braided lines, the Berkley Shock Casting Rods are offered in a range slower action with increased backbone, lessening the possibility of pulled hooks, without sacrificing control.

Made using a 24-ton, multi-modulus carbon blank construction, the Berkley Shock Casting Rods employ an innovative Shock Absorbing Tip that helps mitigate braid’s lack of stretch. Fitted with stainless steel guides with titanium oxide inserts, the Berkley Shock Casting Rods resist cracking and line grooving for extended life. Featuring a new ergonomic handle design and textured rubber for all day comfort, the Berkley Shock Casting Rods deliver the performance, innovation, and features needed to fish braided superlines at their full potential.

Horrible designThis rod has an ok feel for a low budget casting rod... unfortunately the reel seat and the reel hold-downs are a plastic and crack after not much (gentle) use. Very bad choice of material... and you'd think berkley would have seen the cracks during product testing... shame on you berkley.

Why ruin a good product?Bought one 9 years ago when it was 39.99 and caught my pb with a frog. Now they're 20.00 higher and crap. Whoever decided on and approved the plastic reel seat should be fired. Berkley took a solid product with great value and made it junk. I keep thinking they'll change it back but it hasn't happened yet.

Comments: Used the 7'6" heavy shock rods for a few months now and hooked over 200 25lb+ carp in tournaments and just over 100 60lb+ catfish in tournaments never had a problem of anything or the reel seat breaking not even when tightening to mount the reels I use for every weekend and a couple nights during the week.

Comments: Got the 7'medium for soft bait/worm/jig work. Rod is heavier than expected but sensitivity is quite good with braid. Power is more like MH than medium and action is consistent with the fast rating. No issues thus far with the reel seat cracking.

Comments: I bought this to replace a broken Berkley Lightning rod. Don't buy this. It's dull. The rod butt came off in a cast and the blank cut my palm. Not a quality product. Per the BLR above. Pretty good for the money. Regular use shows quickly. The blank does not fully extend through the handle.

From: BB: Austin, tx 2/15/23

Comments: Works fine, as long as you don't put a reel on it. The reel seat rings are hard, brittle plastic. Broke in the garage, tightening up my reel. Garbage

From: Johno: SC 8/2/22

Comments: The previous Shock rod was one of the best values in fishing, but this model is not. The clear reel seat performs just as it looks. Cheap and bad. A rod that is supposed to be designed for tough use and braided line can barely tighten down a reel without breaking let alone shocking braided line hook sets. Would not reccomend it.

From: Terry: Unknown 5/24/22

Comments: I had a 7'0 medium heavy and when I set the hook on a fish the handle broke. The clear part that holds the reel snapped

From: Jack: Minnesota 9/26/21

Comments: I always try to accentuate the positive in fishing equipment - but I'm having a hard time with this Berkley "updated" Shock rod series : The main issue is due to the plastic reel seat which simply will not hold up ... Tighten it down too much - it breaks . Fight a fish with even moderate torque on the rod while winding the reel and it breaks . Berkley makes many good lines , lures, etc. -  but rods now is not one of them (the previous generation Lightening Shock rods were much better built !) *If you are looking for a nice rod series with a nice selection in the same price range -  it's tough to beat the Daiwa Aird - X series (also carried by Tackle Warehouse) .

Comments: My go to frog. Great in my lily pads and walks great on ambush points. Haven't missed a bass yet. I use the standard for pushing in the summer when my pads are thick with little holes and the jr for the spring and fall when I have little pads or they are dieing off.

From: Jonathan: Chute 12/1/20

Comments: Garbage garbage garbage! I bought 3 of these rods they 2 broke in my hand while casting with 2 years of owning them and not even 20 bass less than 4 pounds caught between the 3 rods they broke causing my reel to fall in the water the 3rd rod is on the verge of breaking and I'm scared to use it cause I don't want to hook my pb and loose it cause this rod breaks I contacted Berkley went back and forth and they didn't do anything worst rod and customer service I'll never buy from Berkley again.

From: Unknown 12/1/20

Comments: Garbage! I can't believe they have not scrapped this model yet, the reel seat is plastic. tighten down just a tad to Much and the real seat breaks in half. all they had to do was use even a cheap metal and this rod would have been fine. but no as it currently is, it's not even worth $50. I feel bad for the people on A tight budget who wasted their money on this. if I could I'd send everyone here $50 for their loss.

From: Dean: Las Vegas, NV 11/15/20

Comments: This is an add on to the last review. Please consider buying this rod before you buy it. What I mean is if you have the money buy a different rod ( Lew's ) do it because this rod falls apart easily. I fish every chance I can after school and on the weekends so this rod is used very often and the grip starts to wear and come off. The eyelets come of and damage your line. I haven't had any problems with the reel seat like other people but it might happen. So if you have the money buy a different rod but if your on a tight budget (like me) go buy the Daiwa Arid X that Tactical Bassin recommends. Ignore the last review by me.

From: Isaac: Georgia 11/13/20

Comments:I have to start off by saying that this is a GREAT rod for the price!!! I know that people have said that the seat breaks but i have two of these rods and neither one of the seats have broken. Both of the rods I have are 7'medium heavy's. I use them for frogin' and flippin' and they get the job done. I pair them both up with lew's reels and 50 pound braid. Overall they are great for the price.

Comments:I own the previous generation of Shock rods and absolutely love them. Have withstand the test of time. Figured I would give the new model a try even though there is multiple reviews regarding poor experiences. This rod is sub par. After a year of use, there was only one thing I liked about it. That is, when it is standing in my rod holder, the orange section of the rod acts as caution indicator... The black grip gets extremely slippery when you have caught multiple fish. The action and sensitivity is not what I am accustomed to. Surprisingly, I have not broken the reel seat yet. Overall I would not recommend this rod.

From: Unknown - 7/3/20

Comments:Whatever you do do not buy this rod it's complete garbage I was tying down my reel on the Reel seat and the cheap plastic cracked in half $50 down the garbage complete disappointment the old model was so much better

From: Unknown: 2/3/20

Comments:Rod is awesome but reel seat will break soon as you get it if you can't afford a new rod just put a hose clamp on it that's what I did and still works had it for year now

From: Unknown: 12/7/19

Comments:Have one of the older models and loved it. The plastic reel seats on the new ones are garbage, a joke. Berkley never put a reel on one, I guess. It cracked in my garage, before I ever used it, then the replacement cracked first time out. I won't be trying it a third time unless they go to a usable reel seat. Ridiculous.

From: John: Summerville, SC 11/8/19

Comments:I have the older version of this rod that I found on clearance for $20 and Although that's about as cheap as they come, I'd have to say this is a great rod for the money. I have caught many 3-4 pounders on this with an Abu Garcia Black Max real and some cheap braided line, and I've got to say I grab this set-up more frequently than I do my more expensive rods. I wish they wouldn't have went to clear plastic and rubber and just stuck with the cork, but oh well.

From: Ben: Iowa 9/23/19

Comments: I own the 6'6 spinning, and 7' medhevy in the old style (cork handle). This remake feels very different, a lot softer with a bit less sensitivity. I'm don't hate these remakes, but I prefer the old style.

From: Unknown - New York 8/20/19

Comments:DO NOT I repeat DO NOT purchase this rod. My 4th time out with this rod and it snapped exactly in half on the hook set of a 2 pound bass.

From:Andrew: Oxford 5/18/19

Comments:For those of you who are looking for top quality features at a low price. Do not look here. If you are looking for a rod that will get you started look not further. For the price, this rod is decent. It doesn't have top quality components but at the price point. Be realistic. Cheap guides. Cheap seat. What I can say about it. For one whole year I took my 7 foot heavy action. And I beat the snot out of it. I fished top water frogs with it. I jig fished the heaviest nastiest grass mats I could find. I caught hundreds of 2-4 pound fish in every condition possible. Had braid and flouro on it. Combined with a black max reel. I had a seemingly indestructible 100 dollar combo. It wasn't until an incident while on a boat that the rod broke. This rod is stiff. Especially the heavy. But I loved it for my frogs and getting into heavy cover. I have outgrown this rod. As I am now seeking more quality. But this will not be a bad beginner rod if you decide to go with it.

From: Pabassin:Pa5/9/19

Comments:locking ring for the reel seat splits easily after some hook seats. its entirely plastic so kind of expected. if they hadn't went plastic on reel seat components this would be an excellent rod.

From: dev:MS3/4/19

Comments:My expectations weren't high, but I did expect this rod to be straight and it is NOT.Guides are not straight either.Big disappointment.

From: Kristi:Dallas,TX12/10/18

Comments:I won't pretend this is the best rod on the market, but if you are looking to learn to use a bait casting set up without breaking the bank, my opinion is this is a decent rod to start with and you won't feel bad if you decide you don't like casting set ups. I have one that I've owned and learned on and now my oldest son is learning with it as well.
