A killer for the Spanish MackerelI bought these to chase the Spanish Mackerel here in Florida. The concept of the lure sounded absolutely killer for the species. I picked up a couple packs of the 1/2 oz. heads, and a couple of packs of different colored bodies.
The actions is absolutely phenomenal. I rigged a dedicated Bayruf body both ways to see if the differing shapes and rigging techniques actually affected the action of the lure as much as it advertises; and it does. The bodies can be trimmed down to create a more appealing look when the fish are chasing (or are zero’d in on) smaller baitfish, as Spanish often are. And after toying around with this a bit longer, I was able to effectively use other smaller soft bodied lures on the jig heads as well; as long as the bottom portion of the lure is flat (like the designated Bayruf bodies are), you will get the side-to-side action. However, none of these other plastic bodies give me the consistently super crazy and erratic action that the Bayruf bodies do. Your rod setup and action will significantly play a role in how the lure works, obviously; with the smaller bodies, I couldn’t rip/jerk the lure too hard without it loosing its side-to-side action, even with a more parabolic rod. Each different brand and body that I used took a little practice to get the correct action down. But once you get it down, the Spanish just can’t resist it! I took a trip from the Indian Lagoon area to Okaloosa Pier and even caught my first Northern Mackerel with these things, including my first Bar Jack and little baby Amber Jack!
They work great from a pier, the jetty rocks, and the boat, and the bank. But I have learned that they have two major flaws:
1. The hooks are strong, but can be bent out if you hook up on a really big/stud Spanish or larger species (especially if your drag is not set correctly and is too tight).
2. The hook eyelets are too small if you plan to hoist a fish upwards onto a raised platform, like a pier. These heads require a loop knot to get good, consistent action. And when fishing for Spanish Mackerel, I often have 60# mono leader on, which barely fits through the eyelets on these jig heads. When landing a fish such as a Spanish Mackerel, I don’t flip fish onto the pier. I point my rod tip straight down, tighten my drag, and slowly reel the fish up, where I then grab the line and pull it over and onto the pier. Because the eyelet is so small, I found that it digs into the line and cuts it when I tighten my drag and try to slowly reel the fish upwards to me. I now use a snap/snap-swivel to get around this, which affects the action negatively.
I really, really hope that they release a saltwater version to correct these two issues. Other than that, these things are basically my confidence bait for the Mackerel.
Worth the moneyI caught a mackerel with it first time out. The side to side jig action it gives is a great trigger for the fish. You will need to get the correct soft plastic for it as they go hand in hand. You won't regret this. It's the only one I'm using moving forward.
BR Head Highland ReservoirThis head has some of the best back and forth movement out there. Seems like the fish were just as surprised as I was. I'd run a swim jig or regular ball head through with no takers. Then I'd jerk this through, and it would always get one to strike. 14 in the boat on the first outing. One of those baits I'm going to keep secret from my buddies as long as I can. Sorry not sorry lol
Bank Angler hereSaw a bunch of YouTube videos about how good this things works for boat fishing/ live scope style fishing, but works wonders on the bank! GETS BIT with the crazy action it makes when fish won't bite anything! Pair it with the BR minnow style!!
