Overview

The Lobina Ricos are the premier popping bait on the market today. How can such a high priced bait sell so well? The answer is simple - they catch more and bigger fish. Lobina Ricos are the 'go to' topwater bait for more pros on the circuit than any other popping or spitting bait because when there is money on the line, only the best will do.

These hard to find lures feature beautiful, intricately painted finishes, sharp hooks and long flowing tails that move and undulate long after the bait has stopped. But the secret is in the design. The cup up front is made to spit just the right amount of water in front of the lure and is tuned to give just the right popping and splashing sound to imitate a baitfish in trouble on top of the water. The Lobina Ricos are just better by design. Prismatic 3D eyes round out the package for a popping bait that cannot be beat.

The larger Lobina Rio Rico is heavy enough to throw on a casting setup and is really a big fish producer. Longer, fatter, and noisier, it can also walk-the-dog easily, popping and spitting the whole way in and can be used when there is more chop on the water. The Rico is great for quieter presentations and although it makes a big commotion, it does not displace the amount of water its big brother does and is great for quiet mornings and shallow areas. This is one of those baits that when you buy one and see how effective it can be, you will come back and get more. Tackle Warehouse offers you more of the lures that the pros make money on so your fishing can reach a new level whether you fish tournaments or not.

Please note: The feathered treble hook colors may vary depending on the current inventory.

Comments: I owned a guiding business for largemouth & smallmouth bass for 22 years. The original Rico, along with the Heddon one knocker and a Lucky Craft pointer 100 suspending jerkbait were the three baits that consistently put big bass in the boat for us anytime the water temperature was above 65 degrees. I cannot tell you how many customers we had where we put a 5 bass limit in the boat over 20 pounds on this ageless topwater bait , and it works as good today as it did in the 1980's.

From: Unknown: 6/24/23

Comments: Ahhh the Rio rico .. these sure bring back great memories of the early 90s .. then they were $25 a pop .. only the rich anglers had em - ha I splurged and got one .. yes they do work better then most top water plugs .. however w/ time comes better baits .. the shower blow and vixen will catch/land better numbers .. it's about acoustics- fact - This popper has just that .. and it's why it's been the best popper for the past 30 years .. however popmax will argue this - wink - What your buying is an icon .. every serious angler should have 3/4 in their tackle .. it's an iconic lure .

From: Dean : Las Vegas 12/27/22

Comments: They get bit consistently. Over time, I ammassed quite a few where the paint got thrashed. Here's a tip, find someone who paints well and have them custom refinished, it saves throwing them away and gets you a lure that looks and is exceptional.

From: John: 12/25/22

Comments: This is hands down the best topwater lure that I've ever used. I first saw one of these in a local bait store and balked at the price. How could a popper be worth $20 dollars? After resisting for a while I gave in and bought one before a trip to Guntersville in May. The trip started slow, nothing was getting many bites, and I figured I give this "overpriced" popper a try. On the first cast I landed a 4 pounder. One the next 10 casts I landed 7 bass and it was on like Donkey Kong. My partner in the boat switched to a Lucky Craft Popper with no luck. Then he rotated through every other topwater that he had with him with only a few bites to show for it while the Rio Rico landed bass after bass. That trip the Rico landed over 100 bass for me, including several over 5 pounds. That was 6 years ago and since then the Rio Rico has become my most productive lure from April to November and it's not even close. I don't know what it is but this popper absolutely just hammers all species of bass. Work them fast, work them slow, twitch them, bloop them, try it all and the bass will tell you what they want. The hooks are incredibly sharp and these lures are very tough. I have bounced them off of rocks, trees and dock posts but have never had one break. I have had some of the finish come off of the lure but that's mainly because the bass have chewed them to death. Having bass chew the paint off of a lure is definitely not a problem if you ask me. I get it $20 is a lot for a popper, and I had my doubts, but not any more.

From: Jim: Kentucky 8/30/22

Comments: I wouldn't waste your money on these lures. I purchased 3 of them and the paint wore off both side of the bait from the hooks within the first 4 hours of using the Rio Rico. Tied on another one and it did the same thing. I wouldn't buy them if they sold for $10.00. They are pretty much exactly the same as a yellow magic. At lease you can get a couple of months out of them before the paint starts to wear off them. Not the right choice for a top water enthusiast.

From: Unknown: 4/9/22

Comments: Now that I have had time to fish both the Rio Rico and the Pop Max a decent amount, I thought it'd be nice to leave a review comparing the two. First off, both the Rico and the Pop Max are phenomenal poppers. I know a lot of people will just say something along the lines of "why would I spend $20+ on a popper when the Pop-R is cheaper and works just as well?". Don't get me wrong, the Pop-R and other poppers like it are great baits, but they're limited. The thing that makes the Rico and Pop Max so good is their versatility. Being able to walk the dog so well along docks and see walls has caught me more fish than I ever thought possible on a popper. Now for the comparison. I believe the Pop Max works better when the fish are chasing bait on the surface. The sound and amount of bubbles it makes just mimic the fleeing bait fish better imo. As for the Rio Rico, I really like it more for throwing at "fishy" spots. So like a dock pylon or fallen tree. The knoc kers are very loud and draw fish from ways away. You can't go wrong with either. Since they're hardbait topwaters, they're pretty hard to lose compared to most baits, so even thought they might be expensive. Having already caught over 100 bass on a single popper (having to change trebles) makes up for it.

From: Hunter: Texas 1/26/22

Comments: These popper absolutely catch fish, but Im not impressed with quality.  I had 3 new ones this year that are taking on water. I fish open water, so the lure has not contacted anything but my deck and the water. The stitching on the feathered hook immediately starts unravelling on the the first fish and a rear split ring opened on me yesterday. I fish the lure on 8lb test on a spinning rod. It's not like I put a bunch of pressure on it. So I have stripped the lures, drilled holes to get the water out, redone the clear coat with a 2-part epoxy, added new dressed hooks and replaced the split rings with Spro rings. Yes, they catch fish, but it's just not a quality made lure.

From: Greg: Hoschton, GA 7/4/21

Comments: best popper on the market well made great hooks catchs lots of fish

From: Bruce: Louisiana 5/1/21

Comments: I recently purchased four of the Rio Rico's. As I removed 2 of the Rio Rico's from the plastic box the eyes fell off. I checked the other two baits and the eyes also came of with slight pressure from my finger. The feather tails were the worst that I have seen on any manufactured bait. Not impressed that I have to rebuild these baits before ever making a cast.

From: Unknown: 4/25/21

Comments: This is the best popper I've thrown. I definitely recommend it for beginners since it's so easy to tease out action with this bait. If you want to walk a popping bait (you should) this is the best hands down. My only down-side is the bait I bought started to lose the string that ties the feathers on after about five bass. Once you take one of these out of the package put a bad of super-glue on the tie to secure the feathers in place and you should be good to go.

From: Tyler: Woodbury, GA 4/18/21

Comments: The Rico in absolute is the best top water bait I've ever thrown. I've won alot of money on them. You can NOT WALK A POP R or any other popper other than a Rico. Just try and get back to me...I hope all yall keep throwing the cheap ones, just more fish for me...

From: Chris: Senoia, Ga 3/28/21

Comments: Not sure if this lure is worth it, but got hammered by the fish during the very first cast! And other two just killed it later. I was so truly impressed by how loud this Ricos is. There was even a guy came up to me and asked what lure I was using because it was very loud on walk the dog. I WILL order more fore sure. Tight Lines :D

From: Unknown 10/14/20

Comments: WORTH EVERY PENNY!! I've tried them all... Pop R, Megabass poppers, Arashi cover pop, strike King pop, iovino splash it, Yellow Magic popper and all the others. The ONLY poppers that have delivered incredible results on a CONSISTENT basis time and time again have been the megabass popper and the Rico. They both differ slightly but they shine in different times and places. BOTH of these lures have caught me piles of bass with a handful up to 7lbs. There are specific times where one will outfish the other, but most times I favor the Rico. It is NOT just a popper. This is an extremely refined lure that you have to be very skilled to exploit it's effectiveness with. It spits, it walks almost in place, it bubbles, pops several times quickly without blowing out and even dives if you want it to. There is no other bait on the market that does what this one can or sounds like it. Top quality action, hardware and superior fish catching ability. I'm on my 8th Rico and will still buy more even at this price.

From: Jeremiah: Atlanta, GA 7/8/20

Comments:You get what you pay for with the Rico. This bait is deadly effective. I usually fish super deep clear water with the lakes out here in Central Arizona and the bass cannot stand the Rico. I've heard stories of my dad being outfished 6 to 1 using a Rebel PoP R but I had to see it for myself. It was closer to 10-1. Whether it's the balance, the lip design, the colors etc. You can actually catch bass on glass water with NO WIND, 20 feet of water clarity, and literally DEADSTICK THIS BAIT for 10-30 seconds and they will hit it. You can walk the dog easily and they destroy it. It's the top water equivalent of a Megabass Vision 110 jerkbait. They come to investigate it and the bait is so well designed they cant resist. Worth every penny. Buy yourself 2. One with some chrome or some flash and one with something bold like a chartreuse for the cloudier days or dingy water. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

From: Cole: Maricopa, AZ 2/25/20

Comments:I've been fishing Rico's since 1997 .. they just flat out catch fish - to this day I still don't know why they outperform other popers , they just do . Rico's on calm waters - promise you'll have a great day

From: Dean:Las Vegas 11/22/18

Comments:Pricey popper, but worth every penny! My buddy and I were fishing poppers, he was using another brand, and the rico was catching bass cast after cast.Definitely gonna be buying more of these soon.

From: Ryan:California7/23/18

Comments:could not find any reviews that match the rico with a megabass pop-x so i bought both to see for myself. being a megabass fanboy i favored the pop-x but there is no comparison: the Lobina is the better top water lure. little rod twitches are enough to spit, bubble and walk this bait. because of this, it stays int he strike zone much longer than the pop-x. at 50 feet out i can still hear the Lobina's rattle system. the pop-x does cast further, however, it takes a lot to impart action to the lure. you almost have to drag it across the surface. Lubina Rico is easily worth every penny.

From:JP: Ontario, CA 5/21/18

Comments:This really is the best popper ever made. The sound that this little guy makes its remarkable. I don't care what anyone says, the quality and performance of this bait justifies the hefty price tag. Just a phenomenal lure

From: Jay P.:Niagara Falls, ON3/24/18

Comments: Hands down best topwater popper on the market! If you disagree than you either have no idea what your doing or your using the wrong equipment for this bait. A medium action setup will do the trick, mono, and walk the dog on a slack line. A heavy setup with fluro, heavy action rod and a stiff tip will only ruin your presentation. Majority of all bad comments come from people who use wrong equipment for a bait. Using one rod and reel for alot of variations of setups will only turn you away from baits that catch fish. Using the right equipment will give you the right presentation of what a baits designed to do and you will probably change your mind on a bait and catch more fish.

From: Don: Paris ,tenn 10/23/17

Comments:Bought 3 Lobina Locos for a Canadian smallmouth trip in August 2017. Will they catch fish?....Yes. Are they better than Rebel PopR?.....No. Are they better than Rapala poppers?....No. But if you enjoy lures that constantly snag hooks on line, constantly run line through split shots, and consequently turn these frustrating lures into line-spinning poppers, then by all means pick up a Lobino Rico. They are expensive and do catch fish, but the accolades in these customer reviews are grossly overstated IMHO. I would recommend staying with PopR or Rapala or any other MUCH less expensive popper.

From: DB: Indianapolis 9/12/17

Comments: yes, they do work...but..they don't last. I have broken 3 of them now. the first 2, just the hooks broke off. I lost the fish both times but replaced the hooks and was back in business. the next time the wire loop that holds the split ring the hook is on broke...lost the fish and the lure is toast. when you pay $22 for a lure, it should be built better.

From: kr: felton 8/7/17

Comments:I've been buying from tacklwarehouse for 4 plus years and live by the reviews. However ive never written one myself. Well the Rico made me change my ways. This thing flat out catches fish. bought it during the black friday sale and it took me until july to use it. Within the first hour of using i put 6 fish in the boat on a highly pressured lake including some nice 3lb largies and smallies. Next time i used it was for a tournament the following saturday and i had my 5 fish limit in an hour. suck it up and pay the money for this spitter. dont work it like a pop-r because thats not what it is. use the walk the dog technique and work it like a spook. OH AND swap the hooks out with St-41 owners size 4

From: Josh: New Hampshire 7/18/17

Comments:My go to popper, Smaller one thrown beside weed edges are deadly. They have the perfect popping action, Caught my pb 8.8 lbs on it

From: Colby: Raleigh Nc 6/13/17

Comments:I bought a bone color rico ,the first time I fished it I caught several nice fish. The last fish I hooked came off,I got my lure in and it had split at the seam and the rear hook had came out ,I was very satisfied with how it caught fish, but not with how little time it was used,I was wondering,if there was any kind of warranty on the bait?

Comments:This is the only popper they make in my opinion. This is by far and I mean far the best popper they make. Whoever talks junk about it is crazy. I will take this popper and you pick whichever one you want and we will bet whatever you want. I guarantee I will out fish you 5 to 1.

Comments:One of the best poppers out there! Expensive but worth every penny. I bought the volt pattern 3 years ago & have caught hundreds of bass on it. Still have the same hooks & feathered treble on it. This thing has so many scratches & teeth marks on it & probably only half the feathers left but still keeps producing. I loved it so much I bought another one but have yet to use it since it still have the original. I would definitely recommend buying this if your on the fence about it. Only popper I use.

Comments: I swear by the rico, I have caught so many fish on this bait. I have outfished people fishing with me for years when they use todays pop-r against my rico 4 to 1.

From: Todd: USA 5/5/15

Comments:By far the best popper on the market, consistent with razor sharp hooks and a great balance. Cried the last time I lost one not due to the price but all the great fish I had on that bait. Just picked up two more.

Comments: my absolute favorite topwater is the Rico. This popper does out fish all the others by far! Especially on slow days when the fish won't take anything, this lure produces. What convinced me was when the bass were deep in my favorite lake (about 25ft down). I out fished my brother using jigs and jerk baits with the fry color, and that wasn't a one time event. This popper calls in fish and makes them eat it. Yes these baits are expensive, but they float. So if you lose it, chances are you can get it back.

From: Garrett: Mesa, AZ 7/11/14

Comments:I've caught more bass on this lure than You would believe. A definite 5/5. At first I was like what am I doing paying $20 for a popper? Then I bought it and I haven't looked back. I'm looking into getting a few more in different colors. If you live in an area with a mayfly hatch, you're going to want the bone white one. You'll annihilate the bass with it.

Comments:5 out of 5!Killer pooper! I have the larger size Rio Rico in a bream pattern (Not shown on the site) and it slays bass. The Rio Rico is great for summer and the smaller Rico is great for spring and fall. I have caught so many bass on this lure that I had to rewrap the feather tall back on. I was going to replace the feathered hook but the hooks are top notch so I just fixed it. My favorite way to fish this is to cast it out and just let it sit for a min or two and just wait.

From:Mike: GA

Comments:The best popper on the market. Yes, they are expensive, but well worth the money. Extra sharp hooks that will not let go when bit. Big bass absolutely kill this thing. When it's time to go bloop, bloop, bloop- then this is always the one you want to throw. The sound is like no other popper on the market. Buy it, and you will be satisfied with the results !!!!

Comments:Im a believer. Never caught many fish on a popR and didn't have much confidence in popping baits. Purchased one of these and never fished it for several months. Last week I got it out during practice for a tourney at noon and whacked them on it. Made a check the next day using nothing but this bait all day with sunny skies.

From: buckhead: SC

Comments: I was fishing every morning at sunrise with my Rico and getting smallies all morning, then I lost it to a Pike, so I tied on a pop-r the next morning and never had a morning like I did with the Rico.

From: K: PA

Comments:Sanding or shaving the bottom lip on a pop'r' to improve its fish catching abiity is NOT from Rico - it is from Mr. Zell Rowland who used to customize his Rebel Pop-R back in the mid80s. Rico is a good lure, tho - it is exactly the same as Japan's "Tifa Michael" that was on the market around 1987. Maybe they are using the same mold. I've been catching fish with this one for long time. Never get sick of this bait.

From: Jade: SoCal

Comments: have you ever read about sanding or shaving the bottom lip on a pop'r' to improve its fish catching abiity? take a look at the front of these lures and you will see the reason. the contour of the rico's mouth is where that idea came from. also the balance is another reason rico's will outfish any popper made. when fished correctly they are the very best! if you don't think so, try one and see for yourself!

From: Wes: Salinas, CA

Comments:I will pay someone $500 dollars if they can take their Rico and outfish me with a yellow magic!!!

From: Brett

Comments: try using a loop knot and 10 -12 lb mono and the Rico will walk like a spook. A true killer

From: Dave: Columbia, MD

Comments: Honestly I have no Idea what it is but I thought I would give this lure a try and WOW it catches big fish.

From: Ross: MA

Comments: I LOVE this bait and after trying most other ( poppers ) I find the Rico to be superior, but I'm having issues with it blowing apart. After the first one I made sure to not hit rocks or the bank and still after only 20 fish it started to blow apart. The only color I use is the chrome shad

From: Dave: Columbia, MD

Comments:For those that think the rico is overpriced havent mastered its effectiveness. Please keep buying those cheaper lures and i will continue to fallow you around the lake catching the fish that were left behind.

From: K.C.: Utah

Comments: These baits are NOT poppers worked properly thet walk and spit, far superior to a pop-r and easily worth the money

From: Dave: Columbia, MD

Comments: you guys go ahead and throw your Pop Rs Ill smoke ya with a Rico anyday....way worth the $$

From: Ryno: Visalia, CA

Comments: trokars are 6.99 a pack for 5 hooks, 6.99 is the average cost for top notch hooks on the market, kvd's mustad trebles cost more than that. Saying trokars are overpriced? really. Any way, I wanted to see what this bait was all about so i bought one, and fished it side by side with the rapala x rap pop, and the pop r. Let me tell you this, the rapala and the pop r out fished this bait 3-1 the three times i fished these lures, 3-1, the pop r cost 4.99, and the x rap pop cost 8.99, and the caught more fish than the rico did costing 20 bucks. Sorry guys, I'm sure they will catch fish, but I havent, and I can fish trust me. Also the finish on the x rap pop and the pop are have held up great, ive had the pop r i used for 10 years now, and have caught 1,000's of fish on it, and the paint isnt coming off more than a few scratches here and there, and only repairs its needed were new hooks every season.

Comments:@Ben-you don't see the point in spending on this, but you buy trokars? Talk about overpriced! These are better than a Pop R, maybe not 15 bucks better but better still. If you want top of the line, you've got to pay for it.

Comments: even with the 30% sale, the rebel pop r is the exact same thing, in fact the rico is copying the pop r, and now rapala is out with a true popper, and actually did things to make it better, changing the mouth slightly(taking the triangle shape of it, and rotating it), having it sit tail down, weight transfer so it cast farther, and a plethera of colors, and it will still cost less than the rico. Sorry rico fans but i have a hard time getting the original popper the pop r, and the new rapala one for less than this bait.

Comments: 20 bucks for this, 5 bucks for a rebel pop r, ill take the pop r, they both do the same thing, and both catch fish, and both have plenty of colors to choose from so why spend 20 dollars when you can spend 5 and get the exact same thing. You can even buy two pop r's and replace the hooks and spend less money overall. I'd much rather buy some pop r's and have money left to replace the hooks with trokar trebles, rather than spend 20, and with my luck lose the lure and be out 20 bucks.

Comments:AWESOME SMALLIE BAIT!!!

From: John: USA

Comments:I don't see what all the fuss is about. I spent $25.00 on one of these and see nothing a rebel POP r won't do. It looks nice but I've caught no more fish than I have on any other popper so no way I'm paying that much for another one.

From: Mike: Jackson, MO

Comments:Try tying a loop knot to the rico you will be amazed with the differant actions that can be preformed. It can spit, blurp, walk-the-dog, and even dive. Takes some practice but well worth it.

From: Mike: GA

Comments:I bought 2 ricos from Tackle Warehouse the bone & the volt. I fished with the volt & my buddy was using a pop-r and I was out fishing him 4-1. I caught 12 to his 3 same technique and setup. I let him use the bone colored one and he started hammering them as well. I think it's worth the extra cost, but that's my opinion (and my buddies)

From: Todd: Morresville, TN

Comments: these are great lures. their worth the money. they are not designed to 'bloop-bloop', they are designed to spit and wiggle. that may be why they excel in shallow water. their more of a finess bait. you get what you pay for. personally, i won't let $5.00 per lure stand in the way of a good day on the lake. these lure's mimic feeding fish while other's mimic frog's like the hula popper's. it aslo helps if you learn how to make it do what it is designed to do. if you don't over-work them, they shine like a search light on a dark night!

From: Wes: Salinas, CA

Comments:Rico's by far out fish any popper on the market. And for the people who disagree, I've seen first hand how much better a Rico is than other pop-r's. A friend and I but it to the test, he was using a rico and i was using the rebel pop-r and he caught fish after fish when i couldnt get a strike even times throw right behind me and catch keepers left and right

From: Torre: Guntersville, AL

Comments: This popper is for people who appreciate the nuance's of a perfectly sanded popper if you are not experienced with these bates your probably want it to go bloop..bloop this bait is designed to spit and flit in the water when's the last time you heard a bait fish go bloop...bloop keep on fishin' your pop-r's i caught some of fish on mine too when i first started fishing

From: Lee: Jackson, TN

Comments:Best Popper ever made!!! PERIOD!!! I have fished them all, and this popper will out fish any of the other brands. I fish deep clear water lakes that are highly pressured and the bass can't resist this lure. Well worht the money. I will never own anything but a Rio Rico.

From: Tony: Virginia

Comments:Fishermen are notoriously superstitious. With that being said, I can see how somebody might swear by this lure if they had some early success. After buying one and using it, I am of the impression that there is nothing about this lure that says "I am worth $20". It is a popper -- one of the most basic lures on the planet. I got the same results from my $3 Pop-R. All I am saying is that I did not find anything about this lure that stood out to the point that justfied the price point.

From: Thomas: Columbia

Comments: um...if you think a Rico sucks, something is wrong with you. Stop using a zebco 33 spooled with 25 lb test Wal Mart special line, and get with the program. These things will out fish other popping baits side by side. Ive seen it many times. Im just sayin tho...
