At the back of the reel, a flip of the lever switches the Merit Free-Liner over to a special secondary drag system. Adjustable by a rear knob, this system is designed to apply very light tension to the spool, allowing a fish to pick up your bait and freely swim off with minimal resistance before the main drag is re-engaged and the hook is set.
