Overview

The Spirex FG is a great choice for someone who is used to fishing a baitcast reel and wants some of those familiar features transferred over to their spinning reel. A Double-Paddled Handle and a Quick Fire II trigger in perfect reach of your index finger, make one-handed casting a breeze.

A solid reel for light tackle techniques, the Spirex FG is also a beneficiary of much of Shimano's new technology designed to combat inherent issues with the genereal spinning reel design, such as line twist and line friction. The new Propulsion Line Management System and new Varispeed Oscillation ensure even line lay and that line twist and friction are no longer a problem. In addition to these features and many others, the Dyna-Balance system eliminates wobble during the retrieve by counterbalancing the rotor and the Aluminum Spool uses Shimano's new cold forging technology, maintaining the metal's original strength without sacrificing molecular density. The end result is a spinning reel with excellent castability and line manageability along with some familiar baitcast finishes.

Shimano Spirex trigger castLike all the reviews below 90% of us grew up with a Shimano 1 finger trigger cast spinning reel. No matter where you fished it they have outlasted many other brands through the years and alot are still in use 25+ years later. Yes this 1 weights more than others but the front drag is smoother with that great 1 finger cast option everyone loved. The double paddle handle will take some time to get used too but you can change it out for a single if need be. Good real to invest in at a reasonable price compared to others these days.

Comments: This spincast reel cast super smooth and reels in smooth also I've had one for well over ten years never had any problems with it or this new one I got lately money well spent.

From: Sam A : Bryan Tx 3/14/23

Comments: This is not my first review on this reel model, nor is it my first Spirex 2500. I have been using them in tournaments for 20 plus years, and although I prefer the rear drag over front drag (which is all that is available now) I do think the drag is smoother with front drag system. Everyone seems to complain about the lack of instant anti-reverse, but I actually appreciate it because the older I get I seem to have lost some of my hook setting strength, and that little bit of give just seems to help pull the hook through a jaw better, actually helping me set the hook! I never have used the trigger system because I prefer to manually close the bail each cast for line management. I always have at least six of these reels raring and ready to go, and replace one or two every year to keep mine fresh and I give my older ones away. My grandsons are still catching fish on some of my old reels from 10 years ago! I hope Shimano never quits selling these reels, and w ould love it if they brought back the RG series. For the money, you cannot find another spinning reel to match it, and if you get to still be fishing competitively at 76 years old, you'll appreciate the double paddle handles more as you slip off one and grab the other! Saved me a few fish over the years!

Comments: I have used Shimano trigger spinning reels since I was old enough to buy them. This is probably the smoothest yet, until there's a fish on. Reeling in a 2lb bass is ridiculous. The reel is so hard to reel its useless to me. I have tried 3 different spirex (this model) same result. The sycopate only last 2 seasons then starts binding. Come on Shimano, trigger reels made your fishing department and I am hooked deep, can't go back to opening the bail by hand.

From: Jethro: Md 12/22/22

Comments: Always used this style reel as it's a great tool and super efficient in operations! Sad that Shimano moved the brake systems in front of bail as not controlling fish will become more complicated. Rear brake systems are the best option ever!!

From: Bill: Billings MT 10/17/22

Comments: Great reel. I am a huge fan of Shimano. I love how smooth the reel is and ease of casting. I can very precise in placement with the right rod.

From: Jason: United States 10/13/22

Comments: I like the Shimano Spirex FG Spinning Reel in the 2500 size. I'm not a fan of the double handle so when I buy a new reel I swap the double for a single "normal" handle from a Shimano Syncopate 2500. I have bought over 40 of the Trigger style reels over the years for 1. They self center the bail upright and I am a line feeler so it's in the perfect position. and 2. When they are centered the reels all lay flat on the boat deck. They are not the strongest reels on the market but for the price I just buy 2 or 3 more each year to replace any that I have broken. I fish about 25 tournaments mostly smallmouth each year and fish Lake Erie for Steelhead every fall with the Shimano Spirex 2500's and they are great reels. I think the Syncopate has gone away so lets at least keep the Spirex around.

From: Mark: Rices Landing, PA 10/6/22

Comments: About to purchase my 5th one, got used to the quickfire trigger from back in the day with the IX200R, I liked the rear drag on that one, but the gear ratio was too slow for me, the Spirex has been great. I hated the double handle, so I bought the handles for the Shimano Sycopate and replaced them.

From: Andy: Georgia 7/18/22

Comments: Very smooth easy casting fast reel. I mean for a spinning reel this thing is fast I like it, I like the trigger to pull the bail up before each cast. The only thing this reel is lacking is the instant anti-reverse it takes about a half a turn back before it catches and with the low gearing, I can see a fish overpowering a person for the half a turn back. All in all for price size features I'd say about a 7/10 is about appropriate.

From: Ben : Russellville, AR 1/9/22

Comments: I have had several of these reels for years and I love them because the trigger feature allows casting to be far smoother.

From: William: Vandalia, OH 11/17/21

Comments: My son and I both have these reels on our rods and we love them. For the money, you can't go wrong.  Also, Tackle Warehouse was great in getting our reels to us in a timely manner even when everyone else was sold out.

From: Jerry: Salem, OR 9/2/21

Comments: I have had this reel for about 4 years. Love it. No it does not have anti-reverse. This is because when your ready to cast you reverse reel the handle and it will stop with the trigger on top. Brilliant! You will love this feature. One handed casts are great. Hook sets have not been a problem with out the anti reverse. You usually have one hand on the handle anyway to stop the reverse.. I did replace the double handle for a single. I ordered the Sedona handle and fit fine. I have the 2000 RG with the rear fighting drag. Unfortunately, Shimano does not make this version anymore. I do have another spinning reel without the quick fire casting system on it. I have to keep in mind how far to reel up my line to leave enough slack to manually open the bail. This becomes cumbersome after using the Spirex.

From: Brian: Weatherford 4/17/21

Comments:The reel had a supper sloppy back stop when reeling. The reel felt like it wanted to reel the opposite direction. It was just a real pain in the butt it was super heavy.

From: Zane CA 11/29/20

Comments: Love the trigger. The reel sometimes is a little stiff to flip the bail over while reeling in.I would probably be happier with a single handle. My other quick fire reels are composite, this one feels much heavier.

From:
Sean 11/22/20

Comments:
Horrible reel! Weighs a ton and the double handle just gets in the way! I need to return it and get a Nasci.

From: Dave: La Verne 11/4/20

Comments:Its a quality reel for sure. It's a really good dropshotting reel and it's been going strong for me for nearly 6 years. Nothing is gonna make this quit.

From: Unknown: 8/5/20

Comments:I have owned several of these reels. I do like the trigger and it is faster for casting but like a review earlier, the trigger mechanism wears out and it ends up not working properly even after taking apart and lubing it up. If you are going to fish any tournaments with these I would not recommend them for that because the bail is very thin and flimsy and in a long boat ride bouncing around it bends the bail and then puts it out of commission unless you flip bail by hand. They are a great reel for the price and if you are fishing for pleasure or at a local lake where they are not getting jarred by rough boat rides. I would recommend for that but not for any tournament fishing situation.

From: Mike: Oregon 3/9/18

Comments:The first Shimano spinning reel I bought was the FX1000. with rear drag$24.95 25 years ago, and I now have 9 Shimano spinning reel, including the Spirex, and 4 Shimano bait casters, including Curado and Calcutta I've tried other brands, and have given them away. I still have 4 spinning reals that are 25 years old and most have rear drag, and Quick Fire, and Quick Fire 2 ...I have Never had an issue with any and have fished saltwater and freshwater rinse them off and fish on. I also have several Shimano Rods, along with other high end brands Shimano stands Tall in my book, and easy on my pocketbook.

From: Will: Raleigh NC 9/3/17

Comments:Have had several Shimanos with trigger feature. Works for a few months and then breaks down and trigger needs new spring or so. Retrieve gets sticky too. would not buy again, but who else makes the trigger feature?

From: Kelly: Moorestown, NJ 8/19/17

Comments:I,m 37. I have the same Shimano reels from When I was 12 and still use them today. They are still as smooth as the day I bought them. I've gotten so used to the quick fire I Can't go without it. These reels maybe cheap but to me they're priceless.

From: Rocky Davis: Justice WV 5/30/17

Comments:I used the MLX shimanos since the 80's. these were the first reels I used before I learned how to use a bait caster. The price is great for a great reels. The main reason I used these reals is the "Fast Cast" the finger trigger on this reel is the BOMB for me. I have gotten used to the fact that it doesn't lock instantly on the hook set, but the finger trigger fast cast can't be beat. I have other shimano spinning reels without the finger trigger and I find that I spend way more time lining up the bail to flip it with the other hand then I do with the finger triggered fast cast.

From: Rich: Santa Rosa 5/14/17

Comments:No instant anti-reverse. Depending on the position of the handle it will almost reverse 1 whole turn on a hookset.do not recomend.

From: Anthony: Lake Station, I.N. 2/5/17

Comments:This spinning reel is amazing! It casts really smooth & with the double handles, it feels like a baitcasting reel. The price on this spinning reel is really good, and I recommend this reel.

From:Michael: Lemont, IL 1/18/16

Comments: I love this reel. My only issue with it is no instant anti-reverse. I wish they'd change that. If they did, I'd sell all my Pfluegers and buy more of these.

From: Steven: IN 11/17/14

Comments:I have owned spirex reels since the 90s and I have NEVER had a problem, I fish all the time. I have 4 spirex reels , the first one I bought in the 90s still works as good as the day I bought it. I have also used that same reel in saltwater. This is the only reel you will ever need, its durable and dead reliable.

From: Michael: galt california

Comments:I have owned 5 of these reels some are over 15 years old and used in saltwater...still working. I also own sedona's,spirexs, stradics etc. Same results over the years. Maintenance especially in the saltwater. Great price and very dependable.

From: Pmac: FL

Comments: great reel for the price. I suggest a fisher on a lower budget to buy this reel.verry smooth. Awesome reel.

From: Garrett: richland missouri usa

Comments: My Grandpa gave me his stella last year, and can honestly say i have been finding myself using this real much more than the stella. Love this real i have it in the 2500FG and have caught anything from 6lb bass to 15 pound channel cats.

From: Cole: Nebraska

Comments:Not sure if I am doing something wrong, but can't get any distance on a cast with this reel.

From: Bryan: Doylestown, PA

Comments:I have three of these reels, 2 rear drag / 1 front drag, and for the $$ they are great reels. The drag on the front drag model is smoother, but the I've have no problems from the rear drag models. My reels are ealier generation from 3-4 years ago, but if you keep the reels clean and oiled properly they will not fail you.

From: John: Lexington, KY

Comments: great entry level reel. got it when i was 12 and it has performed 4 years flawlessly. trigger is great and i love the price. only reason i have upgraded to stradic is i love the low weight. if u only have 60$ to spend on a reel id go with this. i have it paired with a shimano voltaeus rod tht i wish TWH carried and also cost only 50$ the combo mentioned is a great entry level set up for the angler on a budget

From: Zach: Downingtown, PA

Comments: This is a pretty nice spinning reel. i am strictly a quantum baitcast user, but i love shimano spinning reels. shimano always seems to get by with a few less bearings than most other reels, but they are still silky smooth. these reels are reliable and tough. i like how the spirex has the double paddle handle and quickfire trigger, but with the quickfire, you do lose the instant anti-reverse feature which can be a little aggravating at times. all in all, these are quality reels at an affordable price.
