TerribleThis reel is trash. I don’t know if I got a lemon or what, but the side plate KEPT falling off after I got it spooled. I tried every which way to get it locked in but when I’d start reeling it would fall off, causing the whole spool to come off the reel, causing the line to go everywhere and get tangled in the spool itself. This was my first time messing with a casting reel that has brakes that require you to take off a side-piece; and I’ve gotta say, I do not recommend that. The reel and side plate felt cheap and gimmicky and the side plate/spool issue was so bad that I was never even able to test it on the water; it was simply non-functional. I’ll return it and look elsewhere, willing to spend more money for a better quality reel.

Comments: I lost this reel in a boating incident. It sat on the bottom of a pond for over a year. Fate smiled and blessed me with it's return when I inadvertently snagged the rod it was attached too while fishing. I took it home, cleaned it up and it works just as good as the day I lost it. It's the best "budget" reel there is in my opinion.

Comments: Bought this reel last spring and I have no complaints! Works well and doesn't backlash if you know what you're doing. I lost the cover plate in the river last fall and 13 fishing sent me a new one free of charge, so excellent customer service is a plus!

Comments: Well, after 4 years of use and abuse it finally died! The gears wore out and the reel is going to it's final resting place, the recycling bin! This reel was amazing! I put it through hell and it kept on cranking! Stayed smooth and without backlash. For an $80 reel, it's hard to beat! Thank you 13 fishing for the fond memories! time to buy another.

From: Steven: California 12/8/21

Comments: This reel is great!!! I've had it for about 18 months now and I can't say one bad thing about it. I can BOMB lures with this thing. Super smooth, almost never backlashes, and handles fish with ease. Definitely would buy this reel again. Can't beat it especially for the price.

From: Jacob - North Carolina 11/28/20

Comments: HORRIBLE!  This is not a good reel, Perhaps for a beginner but even then I would not get it.  I took out 1 time I hooked up to several 2-3 pound large mouths . As Im reeling my fish back in it feels like the reel is going to break and shatter in my hands. It flexes so much and super janky.   Spend the extra money and get a good reel.

From: Unknown 9/28/20

Comments: I got this reel as a gift 8.11 gear ratio I had it for about 3 years now and it started reeling backwards so it didn't last long for me but it was buttery smooth. It's a shame that it happend.

From: Lucas: Manteca, CA 6/7/20

Comments: I've had this reel for 3 years and with a little oil now and again, it's still strong as ever. I've caught hundreds of bass on this reel. I can cast a lipless crankbait 60-70 yards easy, and rarely have I backlashed! Better than a Lew's at the same price point. Comparable to some of my higher end Diawas. Exceptional reel for the price!

From: Steven: California 10/17/19

Comments: This reel backlashes way to easily. It feels very cheap and broke after a few months of use. Casting distance is extremely minimal and makes very unpleasant noises when casting and retrieving. Save yourself and spend your money on another reel.

From: Unknown: 10/15/19

Comments: I had $130 to spend on a reel for my yak. $80 was more than reasonable yet I wanted a little better performance. The Concept A was within reach but upon reading reviews their design has had use issues that would not wear well for my goals. To give you an idea of how much longevity I intend to get out of a reel - the last freshwater baitcaster I purchased was a new from Japan Curado 51e(lol) - & it is still working very well after years of hard kayak use and maint. Back to the Origin A - I ponied up for the reel and also purchased the CZ(?)bushings to upgrade the oe bearings & purchased INX oil elsewhere for lubricant. After 5 outings now spooled with 30# 832 Sufix on a 13 Fishing chrome rod, this reel has shocked me with it's overall performance and ease of use. Casting and drag are good and it looks like the bushings have closed the deal for me. There should be little wear if any and if does begin to show signs of stiction down the road those self lubing bushings can be refreshed. Considering I have been a Shimano guy for 35 years including bicycles, and every time I return to their products I am a little more appreciative of the brands products, finishes and longevity.  I have less than 300 in this whole rig so my expectations may have been too high for what was spent but so far it has been a good experience over all. The tear down and all parts looked as expected or better when I first opened this reel to install the bushings and I will be opening the easy to drop cover side as well as a tear down on the handle side soon for the first post fishing. I will be keeping my fingers crossed this reel is still on my radar next season or if I have any problems I will be sure to return for updates.

Comments: This reel absolutely sucked I bought it in a pinch when I forgot one of my rods when I went on a trip and 2nd day using it the gears grinded themselves to the point of not having teeth anymore. I called 13 and asked them to send me the gears I needed sense I couldn't find them online anywhere and they said they would order them and call me when they came in in about a week. 2 months later I called and they said they never ordered it and would call in a week and they would be there ready to send to me and I ended up calling again about a month later and yelled at em for having shitty customer service. And the guy was a total jerk about the whole thing. So I don't by there crap anymore and switched to Shimano and have had absolutely no problems.

From: Unknown: 7/3/19

Comments: I bought two of these back when they where cheaper. Now coming from a guy who worships Shimano. The origin reel seem cheap, but they are actually really nice. They are definitely a work horse. I've used mine for punching/flipping, throwing frogs, Texas rigs, jigs, and small swimbaits. the reels performed well! I've landed multiple double digit bass with these reels, they can handle big fish. Really smooth and casts great. They cast even better after you clean and apply oil/grease. If you're on a budget, or wanting to try out a baitcaster then this reel is a perfect choice!

From: Brandon: San Diego  5/2/19

Comments: I am a teenager with a budget. I bought this reel in the 8.1.1 gear ratio, WOW, this reel is great for the price and casts a mile. Casts better than my friends Curado K, Great brakes, slightly sticky drag but i didn't expect anything more from and 80 dollar reel. Would recommend this reel to even some of my more advanced buddies and anyone with a budget.

From: Evan - Cumberland, ME 10/29/18

Comments: This reel casts a mile!!! Twice as far as my Lew's. I can literally throw a size 6 Rapala Rippin Rap 60 + yards! This reel is easy to adjust for your skill level. Zero backlash! Excellent reel for the price!

From: Steven : CA  10/2/18c

Comments: For the price this is probably the best reel u can get I have it on a Duckett ghost 6'10 mainly for top water I can throw a fluke, spybait ab 60-70 yards really nice bout to pick up another and pair it with a Duckett 7'3

From: Jadyn: Alabama  10/1/18

Comments: Bought this reel for my heavy frogging rod, after my first good hard hook set it felt like the reel was loose in the seat but upon closer inspection I saw that it was nice and tight. It was the tangs on this reel that were flexing and making the reel feel loose. It hasn't happened yet but I expect this reel to break out of it's seat after a few more good fish and I will probably replace it with something with a better reputation for quality.

From: Zachary - Ohio 9/16/18

Comments: Awesome reel for the money especially if your on a budget. Got this for the purpose of fishing northern Minnesota. Handled 4 and 5 pound bass perfectly. Decided to go for large pike and threw a red-eye shad ( yeah I'm an old-head and like classic baits ) and it preformed insanely well landing 5 lb pike with ease. I 100% recommend this reel to anyone wanting to get into the baitcasting game.

From: Iowa - 9/10/18

Comments: When I got this reel I spooled it up and went to fish and it stopped reeling and my dray was all the way up and I lost a 5 lb bass like this.

From: Unknown: 1/15/18

Comments: Great reel! put the breaks on 2 and spool tension so that the bait fell at a medium speed and consistently got  80-120 foot casts! bought this for spinnerbait fishing and might pick up a few more. This reel is even comparable to my shimano casitas!

From: Liam: NJ 1/12/18

Comments: Great reel for the price!! I have it in 8.1.1 paired up with a Favorite USA extra heavy rod great for flipping.

From: Garrett - Bauxite, 12/15/17

Comments: It is a great reel for the price. I have used it for a month now and I have not hade any new problems. The only problem I have with it is the spool was a little wobbly from the start, don't know if it is the line or the reel. Great reel though.

From: John vB: Minnetonka, Minnesota 11/27/17

Comments: I finally received the reel yesterday and I was not disappointed. I really like the look and feel of the reel. I was a little weary of the handles at first. They look as if they are a hard plastic and and one would have issues with slipping when they got wet, but I was proven wrong. I had no issues with slippage and the handles feel very nice in the fingers. I paired the reel with a 13 Fishing Fate Chrome 6'6" Medium Fast rod and spooled it with 10lb Pro Line braid. I was very please with the casting distance and it was perfect for throwing flukes and other soft plastics.

From: Unknown 10/8/17

Comments: I've used a bait caster a few times and decided to buy one for myself. Landed a few 2 and 3 pounders the first time out. I have it in the 8.1 to 1 ratio. Very smooth reel versus others in the same price range. Great reel, especially at this price.

From: Nick: Iowa City 10/4/17

Comments: Right out of the box smooth as any other reel could ever hope to be... grips look cheap but really feel nice in the hands, no play in handle or anywhere you wouldn't like but when you take it out on the water...... WOW boy does it cast like a dream id put it there with the tatula as far of ease and maybe even a little better on distance I was so shocked 80 bucks vs my 200 dollar ct type r... shouldn't be a thing but it was, I honestly love this cheap reel its nice in the hands just as light as other reels no over weight or light as a feather but it fits great in hand smooth and is shockingly easy to use and like most baitcasters with breaking systems like these 3 or half way or 2 of 4 breaks means your gonna cast a decent distance but can suffer from backlashing or having to really wing it out there to get anywhere this 13 reel cast and still feels smooth with half the power. don't take my word for it try it and you shall see how awesome it is for 80 bucks....

From: Nathaniel: Ky 7/31/17

Comments: This reel is amazing. By far the best reel for under $100 out there. I put this on my frog rod and really pushed this things limits. very impressive speed pulled them up through the cheese mats with no problem.

From: Tyler Buell: Lafayette 7/17/17

Comments: Got this reel today in right handed 8/1 gears. Loaded it up with P-Line Flurocarbon 15 lbs , put brakes on 3 and went outside to practice a few casts
Pros: Great looking, light weight, easy adjustable braking system. 6-1 adjustable brakes, 13 lbs of drag. Fits in palm of the hand . Easy to pitch. pitched it 30-40 feet with a flick of the wrist. 60-70 feet with a flick of the wrist while performing a underhanded roll cast. Smooth casting with smooth retrieve. Easy adjustable spool tension knob. Cons:
White handles - I don't see thes handles staying white in cooler. Time will tell. Great reel for a small amount of money

From: Calvin: Council bluffs Iowa 7/15/17

Comments: I have 2 Concept A reels and 1 Inception. The Concept A reels are fantastic! Easy to dial in and cast a mile. Also does well with throwing baits in the 1/4oz range without backlash. Also had a lot of fun adding a Trick kit to one of the Concept A reels. Looks like a work of art. The Inception is a good reel but I was never able to dial it in to the point where it would consistently throw lighter lures (1/4oz range) without backlash. But it works great for anything above the 1/4oz range. Overall, they both are incredible reels. And they won't break the bank when you purchase one. Highly recommend 13 Fishing products. Well made and fairly price! Love it!
