Overview

Small in hand but large in durability, dependability, and performance, the Shimano Curado 70 MGL K Casting Reels are the newest addition to Shimano’s coveted line of Curado low-profile casting reels. Featuring a lightweight MGL Spool, the Shimano Curado 70 MGL K Casting Reels require less start-up energy due to decreased inertia, resulting in longer casts with reduced effort. The advanced spool system allows the reel to excel for anglers fishing with finesse baits, such as handmade balsa crankbaits or lures that require light line for maximum fishability. It is also a great choice for flipping and pitching in tight cover when increased line capacity is not required.

Even though they are small in size, the Shimano Curado 70 MGL K Casting Reels are equipped with a Cross Carbon Drag system that provides the power needed for stopping large caliber fish. And just like the rest of the Curado family, they are equipped with MicroModule Gears for enhanced smoothness, as well as, a HAGANE Body for increased rigidity and durability for years of fishing performance. Offered in multiple gear ratios, the Shimano Curado 70 MGL K Casting Reels deliver the proven performance that Curado’s are known for but in a more compact package.

Good Reel but too much MGL hypeI just received the Curado MGL 70 after reading and watching a lot of videos about the MGL spool. I wanted to compare to my Diawa Tatual 100 and see what all the hype was about. Took them out on the water on the same rod and same jig head. Only difference is the Curado had 10lb flouro vs 12lb flouro on the Tatula. The Tatula casted slightly further, which was very surprising, and it costs $70 less. Reeling action is also smoother. The Curado is a good reel and actually feels like the spool is smoother on casting. So smooth I thought for sure it would outcast the Tatuala. Reeling is louder and gears seem to grind more than the Tatula. I'm also disappointed with the internal braking system. You must remove the entire cover, and risk the spool coming out or dropping the cover. The tatula has a completely external brake adjustment. The Curado drag system won't lock down completely. I'm able to pull some line with the drag fully cranked down. The Tatula can be adjusted to where zero line comes out when I try pulling on it. Overall the Curado is comfortable to fish with and seems like a solid reel. However, compared to the Tatula it's more costly, doesn't cast as far, and the drag and brake adjustment system is inferior IMO. I had expected to start using the Curado and immediately feel like it's a superior reel to my Tatula's but that just wasn't the case, so I'm giving it 4 stars. Maybe with more use I'll change my mind, but initial impression was the MGL spool is hype and marketing and doesn't translate into real world difference.

Pitching machineI bought this reel for pitching jigs and Texas rigged creature baits.. 18-22lb Sunline flouro… It’s a super sweet reel, it palms beautifully, (even better than the 150mgl), it’s super comfortable to fish with. It holds plenty of line for pitching with heavier lb test.. It’s a Shimano Curado, they’re quiet, smooth, and always get the job done.

Comments: Only fished with the 70 a few times so far, but this reel is smooth as silk. Casts and retrieves are awesome. This reel is a solid choice for the 10-12 lb line range.

From: MICHAEL: LA 8/9/23

Comments: Love the new curado 70 mgl. Fits in my hands nicely and very smooth casting. Looking forward to switching more of my corados to the 70 size.

From: Mike : Lexington NC USA 6/22/23

Comments: One of the best reels I've ever used. I use this reel on my shakey head bait casting set up. 1/4 ounce heads fly a mile on 10 pd line. Reel is smooth as butter.

From: Jason: Lebanon, TN 6/20/23

Comments: My favorite reel out of my whole lineup. I've got Curados in 200, 150. 70 & BFS and the 70 is the best out of all of them. I paired it up with a Savage Gear Battletek Jerkbait Rod and I can bomb vision 110s. It won't be my last 70.

From: TheClas: Kansas 6/5/23

Comments: This is one of my favorite reels at any price point. it's smooth & easily fits in my hand. The fit & finish is nice with the blacks and green. I couldn't be happier about this purchase. I paired it with a 6'10" medium Expride. This thing bombs 3/8oz blade baits, TN60, MBjerkbait110jrs, small swimbaits (3.3 kietech) & other spring time baits with ease. Definitely my favorite small reel for the price. I can see myself buying more to replace my older reels until Shimano upgrades the new version.

From: Jed: Ca 2/20/23

Comments: I love these reels! They feel the best in your hand, even better than the Metanium and cast like a dream and can be used for small finesse baits and lots of power fishing applications. These have become my favorite reels overall! But still love that Metanium it's like butter!

From: RSW: So Cal 12/2/22

Comments: This was the fourth Curado 70 Mgl k I've purchased. A lot of the baits I use are light to medium weight, so this reel is perfect for finesse fishing. I fish in New England so finesse fishing in the fall is the way to continue catching fish right up until the ice.

From: Randy: Ct. 10/16/22

Comments: 70 is smooth and chucks 3/8 to 1/2 oz a mile, now my primary jig and worm reel and looking to buy another to spoil with braid vs flouro. I purchased the BFS Curado as well and having lots of fun throwing 3/16oz vmc finesse tokyo rigs size 2 with 3.3 keitech fat or 4.5in mad wag slim on 4lb flouro! I was never a fan of baitcasters until I found the Curado series!

From: Geoff: Harrison, NJ 10/8/22

Comments: To preface this I own 10+ Shimano reels. Mostly the older 70 curados and the 200k curados with one dc thrown in there. I love all my other Shimano reels but I am not impressed with this one so far. It's possible I'm not using this for the correct application (I have it on a light flipping set up). The drag doesn't tighten down very tight and it's actually much more difficult to get an accurate cast then any of my other reels. I'm going to switch this over to a different rod (a crankbait/ top water set up) to see if it fares better at casting lighter lures that I don't need a lockdown drag on. As of right now I prefer the older 70s and the 200ks over this reel, as those reels seem to cast more accurately and can be used for almost every application, but I'm going to continue to give this a try and see if I'm just using it for the wrong application.

From: Aaron: Unknown 6/11/22

Comments: I have the 8:1 version and i love this thing. Feels great looks great. More power and can cast better than the previous version. Very happy with the reel

From: Shawn: Missouri 5/10/22

Comments: This is a very comfortable reel, that casts fantastic. I loved it the first season, then 1/2 way through last season both became very geary feeling. I cleaned both well, replaced the spool bearings in the reel that became rougher of the two. I got some improvement, but over all I'm disappointed in these reels. Both reels were very well used, and caught lots of fish, but I still feel let down by them. It's a bummer because I find them really comfortable, and easy to cast. Nice looking reels too.

From: Unknown: 4/1/22

Comments: This is a really great fishing reel. It fishes much better than it's price. The cast control is great and so is the gearing. The drag is also buttery smooth. The only downside is that the finishes are truly a random, mixed-up mess with every part having a different texture, sheen, tint, and tone from every other one. It's just a weird melange of matte, shiny, stealthy, grey, charcoal, black, green, and greenish-black pieces. Some parts are nicely anodized while others are poorly painted. Just fish it and try not to look at it.

From: KC: Oregon 2/20/22

Comments: I now have 5 of these reels and really like the smaller profile that fits my hand great. I was worried about spooling 8 Lb. Floro on but have had no issues. Use them from Flipping all the way down to small underspins.

From: Buddy: Hollister, California 1/14/22

Comments: Purchased this reel in 8.1 ratio for flipping and punching. Paired the reel with the new Curado rod 7'5 extra heavy. The reel performs the task flawlessly and I could not be happier. I own almost every Shimano Curado and SLX reel. I would highly recommend this reel for flipping and casting light lures.

From: Chris: Orlando, FL 1/1/22

Comments: This was my first ever curado and I originally did not think that I would like the 70 size; however, I find this reel to be amazing. Paired it with a 7'2 heavy expride for 1/2 oz jigs and a-rigs mostly. This combo is a ton of fun to fish. The 70 size fits extremely comfortably in hand and the rod feels nice and light. While I will mostly use this reel for pitching jigs, it still has the line capacity to do other techniques requiring longer casts; especially when you downsize the braid. The mgl spool is definitely a bonus especially if you are throwing lighter lures like a jerkbait. Overall, I would definitely recommend this reel to anyone. It is smooth, compact, comfortable, and fun to use. Definitely a 5 star from me.

From: Ryan: Illinois 12/30/21

Comments: Paired with a 6'6" medium rod with 10lb fluorocarbon and this is the setup I dreamed of. I needed something that I could use for both inshore and freshwater and this delivered. Whether I'm in the inlet, river, pond, or small stream, just a flick and the MGL spool puts the lure where you need it. 70 size spool is more than enough for my application. Brakes super easy to dial in. Has thrown 1/16oz neds no prob. I use it for light tackle but it could easily handle heavier jigs. It's now used as a jerkbait/finesse underspin workhorse and I'm going to get another for Xmas.

From: Charles: Murrells Inlet, SC 12/4/21

Comments: Recently purchased this reel and have it paired up with a Dobyns 733. An unbeatable combination. I have had an issue finding smaller profile reels that fit in my palm, but this one certainly fits the bill. Casts smooth, plenty of drag and the reel handle is larger than most MGLs. Put it to the test on a 7lb 4oz on OH Ivie with no problem. Highly recommend this reel it will not disappoint.

From: Jason: Brownwood, TX 10/27/21

Comments: I have this Mighty Mouse paired with a 7"4 medium heavy Expride. this reel has the characteristics of a WENCH despite weighing under 7-ounces.. you cannot go wrong with this reel and better yet, this lineup!.. get the combo

From: Gregory: Huntingtown, MD 10/16/21

Comments: I have always been a fan of Curados and this is my all time favorite of the line. I love that it's smaller but not too small and is still very smooth and powerful. I have five of these now and may get a couple more. This reel can handle small baits on light floro as well as big frogs in thick slop on heavy braid. Balances really well on any rod I've tried with it.

From: JB: San Lorenzo, CA 10/13/21

Comments: Use this reel on my jerkbait setup. This reel is awesome. Casts a mile! Super smooth. Light as a feather. By far my favorite casting reel

From: Al: Unknown 10/7/21

Comments: Outstanding reel. Ive used many other brands and I can never move away from Shimano they have me for life

From: Cooper: Middlebury 9/20/21

Comments: I have owned many a Curado, a Metanium and an Aldebaran and just recently sold a 16 Metanium to find the purchase of another Curado 70 MGL, I like them that much. Reasonably light weight without feeling hollow like the composite Aldebaran, requires little to overcome the inertia of the ultralight spool which makes for effortless pitching and comes in a very comfortable and easy to palm package. While it certainly excels in finesse applications, it has proven reliable at pitching 1/2 oz jigs and T-rigs in and around milfoil for me. My favourite reel to date.

From: Sean: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada 9/8/21

Comments: I have this reel paired with a St. Croix Avid 6'8 Medium Extra Fast and couldn't be happier with this combo. The reel cast better than I anticipated and has plenty of power to handle everything I've thrown at it without any issues or regrets. I will admit that I am a Shimano guy for fishing and cycling, but am so because I really like their mid and high range products. This reel is no exception and is worth the go in my opinion.

From: Mike: New York, NY 9/8/21

Comments: Great casting with all but the lightest baits, smooth retrieving, great drag, and compact. I'm at three and will be ordering a few more.

From: James: Lizella, GA 8/17/21

Comments: I can't say anything bad about this reel. Very comfortable in hand. Shallow spool great for skipping I have it mainly as a finesse jig application. Line flies off effortlessly. Great job Shimano!

From: Ryan: Unknown 8/13/21

Comments: Using this reel for flipping and pitching. It's comfortable and light enough to use all day. Has plenty of power and drag to pull fish out the thick stuff.

From: Brian: Merced, CA 8/5/21

Comments: I had high hopes for this reel when it first came out, but sadly I'm a bit disappointed in it. The finish on this reel is noticeably worse than on the cheaper 200k. It feels very cheap and plastic-y in the hand. The size is nice, but when you're spending $50 more on a reel you'd expect it to have the same quality of paint job as it's cheaper sibling. As for throwing lighter weight lures, I tested this reel against a Chronarch MGL. They both had identical rods, lines, leaders, and baits. The Chronarch was able to cast further, with more control. If I really tried, I could get within a few yards of the Chronarch, but it was a very iffy cast with not a lot of control. It's a nice reel, I'll probably keep it in my rotation, but this isn't as much of a slam dunk as I, and many others, thought it would be. If you could only have one reel, there's an argument to buy this, but there's other reels that are more versatile/cheaper, or more specialized and are better performers.
Also, if you're planning on throwing crankbaits, absolutely stay away from this reel. Lower casting distance, smaller spool size, and smaller handle size make it a chore compared to it's big brother the 200k.

From: Hunter: Utah 8/4/21

Comments: Very Nice product from the leader in reels. Smooth casting, great drag performance, and fast shipping from TW!

From: Bruce: Blastone, VA 8/4/21

Comments: Great reel for throwing Jerkbaits such as the Vision 110. Perfect for smaller topwater baits.

From: Wilmer: 8/1/21

Comments: My go to jerkbait real on megabass levante jerk bait rod so light, smooth, and great in hand. I would also recommend for any light weight lure application as it casts light weight lures a mile. Cannot go wrong.

From: Manuel: Madera, CA 7/3/21

Comments: I own three Curado reels. Nice product. Never had any issues with any of them. A little oil couple time a season and good to go.

From: Unkown: 6/27/21

Comments: Fantastic reel!! Amazingly smooth!!

From: James: 5/11/21

Comments: Tough little reel. Handled small baits and big jigs no problem. Will cast a light bait a country mile, no backlash. Definitely a must have.

From: Brandon: Marietta, GA 5/8/21

Comments: Very good reel, took about 5 minutes to dial in, I use it for flipping and punching and seems to work great, absolutely love this reel and I love how small and light it is, definitely recommend if you want a tiny and light reel, paired on an 7'3" mag heavy enigma phenom 1 rod and it's flawless.

From: Unknown: 4/27/21

Comments: I happened to see the last comment on this reel and don't usually reply twice but with this reel and regarding that comment I feel I need to respond, due to others seeing misinformed comments like these and turning away buyers from this product for no valid reason. Not sure why this reel was compared to the daiwa fuego but the fuego isn't in the same universe as the 70 curado MGL. I know what I am talking about when it comes to reels, I have fished Chronarch MGL, D- Zillion HD, to the tatulas and curado 200's. This reel is TOUGH, period. Anyone trying to say this reel is equal to a 110$ reel IMO is either biased or doesn't know how to use their gear properly. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting a reel that can handle light to medium applications and even heavier flipping applications as well.

From: J.D.: Lake Worth, FL 4/22/21

Comments: Read the review and figured I would pick one up.. It's a nice reel but not smooth like my Daiwa steez reels..It feels as smooth as my met DC, so it really isn't a reel to sell your soul for. Size? Feels a tad larger then my alderbaeon and is comfortable when palming. I am however very happy with the casting distance of this reel.. 1/16 oz wacky and it's out casting my steez A and SV reels..

From: Unknown: 4/24/21

Comments: I have owned this reel for over a year and so far im not impressed. The drag on my reel works when it wants to. Sometimes the drag wont work at all and sometimes it will. I don't know why. The casting distance on this is not even anything bragging about either. I have a daiwa Fuego and its only $110 and it seriously is 5x better than this thing at half the price. Save your money go with the Daiwa Fuego.

From: Luke: California 4/6/21

Comments: I bought two of these reels to use for flipping. I have small hands and I can easily be home these reels. They are awesome! Very smooth and actually help my accuracy. I would highly recommend these reels!

From: Jim: Greenwood, IN 3/28/21

Comments: So far, I love this reel. It has been years since I shopped for a new reel so this is the first reel with the new compact design I've used. I've paired it with a 15 year old Loomis GLX. An awesome combination.  At the same time I using this new reel, I've adopted using braid with a leader instead of straight fluorocarbon. I'm getting fantastic casting distance. I'm using the 7.4:1 as a worm rod.  I can cast and pitch very light weights with this setup. I will also use if for light open hook jigs.

From: Joe: Scottsdale, AZ 3/24/21

Comments: Back to the original style thumb bar , thank God !!

From: John: Lakeland, FL 3/23

Comments: I bought this for casting light top water and square bills. I was using a Curado 200 with 20 lb braid on a 6'10" Curado medium fast action rod. Anytime I snap casted the 200 with a 1/4 or 3/8 oz bait the 200 would backlash. It didn't matter how I set the reel, the only way to prevent backlash with the 200 was to lob cast. I spooled the 70 MGL with the same line and put it on the same rod. After adjusting, I can snap cast the same light baits farther than the 200 without backlash. This little reel is just amazing, well worth the price.

From: Frank: Rockledge, FL 3/7/21

Comments: Really good reel, feels smooth and casts great, took no time dialing it in and feel very solid, shimano definitely has the best solid reels that will last for a long time.

From: Avery: Oklahoma 2/27/21

Comments: Great reel, super smooth casts lighter baits with ease. Another winner from shimano

From: Anthony: Harpswell, ME 2/24/21

Comments: Love the finish and feel of this reel.  It casts very well and the drag is typical Shimano smooth.  Light weight to use all day.  Just started using it but already it is hard to put down.

From: Rod: Encinitas, CA2/15/21

Comments: I have bought several of these reels now and I think it's the best reel for the valve you can buy.  It's compact and fits great in my hand.  Adjustability is easy and is a super smooth reel. I'm looking to add 3-5 more of these to my line up!  I can't wait..

From: Cory C: Glendale, AZ 2/7/21

Comments: Ive owneddozens of shimano reels, and this is the first that wasn't perfect out of the box. The brake knob was sticking and the sideplate was difficult to remove. I haven't used it yet, but it seems ok now. The only thing I really dislike about all new Shimano baitcasters is that the external cast control is impossible to read. It makes it a PITA to adjust.

From: Blake: Clearlake Oaks, CA 1/25/21

Comments:This is a smooth casting reel. I've had Shimano reels before but none were this smooth. Great reel!

From: Aaron: Edmond, OK 12/31/20

Comments:This Curado 70 is insane. The versatility it has is unbelievable. I am not sure if Shimano intended for this reel to be with good or not but it's flawless. I am able to throw light and medium heavy baits with this thing, while fishing 3 different species , snakehead, LM bass and Peacock bass. I have the ability to use this reel for frog fishing for snakehead, which is VERY hard on reels. This reel has the drag power and stability/rigidity to handle it. Caught an 8lb, 6lb and 5lb snakehead no problem on this today. While able to easily switch up with 16 lb floro leader and fish for LM bass or peacock. Just awesome, cannot say enough about this reel. Also throwing 50lb braid on this thing which is also a huge feat for a 70 sized reel.

From: JD: Lake Worth 12/30/20

Comments: This reel is such a major home run hit by Shimano .. I've 3 of these reels now .. and I'm super picky about what reels go on my high dollar rods . This reel just has the "IT" factor .. from the perfect fit into your hand to the liquid retrieve in your cast .. I'm using these reels that throw 1/2 oz & under Baits .. of course their just as capable for heavier flipping jigs I just prefer mine for jerk baits / flukes / chatter baits / sluggos / etc ... in your hand you'll feel the very well made tool it is .. everything is very spec tight .. this reel is just as accurate and free flowing off the spool as my aldebarons @ half the price .. proper maintenance & these reels will last decades .. I see it becoming one of shimanos all time best seller .. ((( shameless plug .. their 300 size currado is just as nice, same review only everything is upsized x 3 )))

From: Dean: Las Vegas 12/23/20

Comments:Shimano has knocked another one out of the park with this little gem. Fits in your hand like a glove and is ultra light weight. I have mine paired with the Shimano Expride 6'10 Med Fast...If you're on the fence quit thinking about it and buy this reel, you won't regret it.

From: Gene U: Warner Robins 12/15/20

Comments:I have used Shimano for years, and they continue to impress me. I have lost count of the Curado's I have owned over the years. I have never been a big fan of the small profile due to spool size and casting distance. I am totally impressed with the 70 MGL K. Purchased for using a little lighter line for jerkbaits. This reel performance is great. I recommend it for anyone wanting a reel for fishing jerkbaits.

From: Ken: Kansas City, MO 12/11/20

Comments: I am not a casting reel guy. I learned to fish on spinning gear and that is my comfort zone. I have always shied away from casting equipment because of the price point for good casting gear and my preference for finesse fishing. When I got into big swim baits I got some cheep casting gear to throw those heavy baits. This reel comes in on a price point that made me take a chance that I could try to use it for lighter lures. It turns out that this reel is a nice bridge between my spinning gear and my big guns for throwing huds. I can throw a texas rigged worm on this reel or throw a big sinner bait. This reel is also helping me cast better with casting gear. I'm right handed and casting to my right accurately with casting gear has always been challenging. Being able to throw lighter lures on casting gear has helped me figure out casting to my right. And it has also enabled me to finesse fish a little faster. All that to say I like the reel very much and it is steadfast becoming a valuable tool in my lineup.

Comments: If you can afford this reel, buy it. If you can't afford this reel, save your money and buy it. This was my first high end reel and I was not disappointed. Perfect for T-Rigs, Weightless set ups, this thing does it all.

From: Quick - Las Vegas, NV 11/28/20

Comments: Awesome reel!! I've got several shimano reels and this is the best for the price they have! I have it spoiled up w/ 15 lb pline tcb and throw finesse jigs and small blades and jerkbaits and absolutely cast awesome with light lures and small presentations. Go give this reel a try is you haven't!

From:
Keegan: Crossville, TN 11/25/20

Comments: I've had this reel for two months. I have many Shimano and Daiwa high end reels. This is my favorite reel. Smooth as glass, extremely solid. It casts light lures almost as well as my BFS reels. Highly recommended

From: Rod: Clovis 11/21/20

Comments: The very first 3 posters took my words / review, no sense in being a broken record - but yes this reel is legit for throwing finesse baits .. throws just as well as my $420 aldebaron without all the $bling$ yet another Shimano home run !

From: Dean: Las Vegas 11/12/20

Comments: I have been off the Shimano bandwagon for a few years after they mucked up the Curado and I got a couple of terrible turkeys and spent more for them then I got out of them in performance. I picked up a 70MGL K a few weeks back after another brand had yet another handle fall off for no reason. I thought this would be great for frogging, problem is this reel casts so smooth and effortlessly I was casting the very little bit of backing I had on it off with 50lb power pro and a Spro 65. I switched it over to my flipping stick and man do I like it short roll casts and pitches are very easy and it is like I found an old friend in my hand for the close range target game I like to play most days. I plan on getting a few more of these especially for my jerkbait rod simply because I think it will work great with these finicky casting offerings. I have to say Shimano has regained my confidence with this offering. While a little pricey you get a huge amount of bang for your buck.

Comments: Awesome reel great for lighter lures and finesse fishing.I bought this reel for just hollow body frogs, the casting distance is amazing. Worth every penny.

Comments: This shimano curado 70 MGL is an absolute beauty, casts away like nothing. It's pretty pricey but if you want something that's going to last and feel great it's totally worth it.

Comments: To me, this reel is right up there with the top-of-the-line Shimano reels. The first time I ever used this reel I had a chatter bait tied on. The thought after my first cast: "WOW!" I honestly wasn't expecting it to be so smooth, and am planning on adding more to my arsenal. I've yet to backlash this reel, even when dialing in the settings on my first outing with it. Just so happened that I also landed my new PB largie of 6.85lbs a couple of weeks ago using this reel, and it handled it flawlessly. Go ahead and get you one if you're contemplating it. You won't regret it!

Comments: This reel is extremely smooth and lightweight. I love it. I own a metanium and this is a cheaper and comparable option!

Comments: Casts light lures like a dream. Butter smooth gears, good drag, what's not to love about this reel!

Comments: Compact, comfortable form factor, smooth, fast spool and brass gears. Great for throwing weightless plastics or flipping 1/2 jigs. Love this reel so much I'm contemplating selling my 16 Metanium.

Comments: This reel is a big improvement over the older Curado 70, especially when casting light lures. I also have a Tatula SV TW. they are both very good reels. easy to cast, smooth and well made. I can't say I prefer one over the other.

Comments: Awesome reel! Have Curado k, chronarch mgl its kinda in a class of its own. I personally haven't had any problems. Very smooth, very strong. It's awesome. Its a Shimano made in 2020 i wouldn't expect anything less from the best in the business. Great job.

Comments: Well done Shimano, well done. I had 12 of the last Curado 70 model they made and loved them, the only thing I wasn't a fan of was the wimpy handle they put on it but this new MGL 70 is legit! The 8.1 I purchased came with a stout 96mm handle which saves me a lot of money from having to upgrade the handles like I did with the last model. Not only are the micromodule gears buttery smooth but the MGL spool is awesome for getting that low trajectory for skipping docks and makes pitching light baits a breeze. When you need to go find that kicker in the thick stuff, just lock the drag down because this little dude has plenty of power to handle heavy fish and heavy cover. AWESOME REEL!!!

Comments: This is a solid reel. It is comfortable to palm and I have big hands. The casting is smooth and dialing in the baits is easy. The retrieve is smooth as are all of shimano's higher end reels. The drag also is fantastic. I would say the drag is just as smooth as my shimano Chronarch. If you want a solid reel that does lighter lures well, this is deff the top of the game as far as the 200$ class is concerned, the tatula SV doesn't come close IMO.

Comments: Shimano did the curado 70 justice here. Originally i didn't like the old curado 70. It lacks the smooth micromodule gear and mgl spool. There were problems with it's gears grinding up and not holding to the abuse. This new mgl70k have improve micromodule gears, mgl spool and more more refining worl done to it. It cost more but I rather pay the extra for a reliable small beast for flipping and pitching. Feels like a aldebaran or steez ct but fight like a zillion or metanium.
