Tough 200I have 3 of these and for saltwater inshore bass. Tough reel. Cast excellent. The drags hold up well and can handle these bass no problem. High miles on jerk and crank baits to slow rolling swim baits over rocks and reefs. Some say these have a bit of drag fade after strike, but I think they're fine 40# leader.

2nd Tranx 2001st Tranx 200 very smooth love it! Ordered a 2nd one and it reels very tight, thinking of sending back.. everything else seems fine, but 1st one is smooth guess I got spoiled.

Previous Feedback

Comments: I bought this reel to use for inshore fishing (red drum, trout, and flounder), and I really like it for the most part. My only gripe is that I cannot get the line to lay evenly on the spool. I have tried re-spooling it several times, and no matter what the line stacks up higher on the right side than the left. Very irritating! Other than that, the reel is great. I can cast in heavy winds without huge backlashes, the retrieve rate is plenty fast (8.5 gear ratio), and I found out that the drag is really smooth. Perhaps I just got one from the factory that is just a little bit off with the line guide/worm gear.

Comments: Haven't had the Tranx 200 for a while. But I have already put it through some shit. From throwing large swimbaits here in Central Florida working good size bass out of "FL JUNGLE GRASS" to it getting beat around on my yak. Tranx 200 size well worth it in my opinion.

From: Unknown: 4/12/23

Comments: A couple things to note. This 200 really feels much closer to a 100 - 150 series reel. It's quite small. I like it enough that I've purchased two this year but it should be noted that the drag is a little weak for the saltwater fishing I do. I kind of have to pin it down. Other than that, I really like them. Lets hope they last.

From: Jared: Oceanside 2/12/23

Comments: True workhorse! Bought this for mid size glides, which it's amazing for. However, I tried some light lures like jerk baits and it performed well even on the heavy action rod. Love that svs infinity braking ! It is a bit heavier than the Curado 200, but it has a bigger handle, heavy brass gears, and a few seals, which make it a Tranx. Once on a rod, you don't notice the weight, just smooth power. Just get it, you're going to love it

From: Steve: Ontario, Canada 5/23/22

Comments: The best workhorse of a cranking reel money can buy. Don't debate and don't doubt, get the Tranx!

From: Hayden: Haleyville, AL 12/29/21

Comments: Great reel! Fished all up and down the So Cal coast with it. Jetties, inshore, and even surf. Took it with me to Florida,Texas and Mexico and it was great. Paired it with a 7' HMG travel rod, And it was casting Lucky Crafts and weighted lures way out! Was killing it surf fishing in Mexico. Had it for over a year now and I just rinse it off after use and dry it and it's still running smooth.

Comments: It's a Shimano what more is there to say? I've been slowly upgrading my reels over the years and this one is probably the best 200 size reel that I own. It is so smooth and controlled and can cast everything from medium-large swimbaits to weightless flukes with ease. I've tried to backlash this thing and though I can get it to backlash it takes a lot of effort. This is the best reel I own, bar none.

From: Mike : Dallas 11/21/21

Comments: Unbelievable reel it has the capability to throw the baits you would typically throw on a 300 power reel. Great for glides in the 150 220 mm range as well as any umbrella rig. But it is without a doubt my favorite swim bait reel!!

From: Jay: Kentucky 9/25/21

Comments: Out of the box, the reel was rough and tight. After checking a few things, the reel was smooth and okay. Noticed a little blemish or damage on the pawl cap. Decided to spool the reel and it loads heavy to the left. Tried spooling 3 different ways...  on the last retrieval the reel got rough and tight again. Tackle warehouse will not refund because I spooled line on the reel!!! Sent it to Shimano for a new reel, but have yet to hear from them. Worst experience so far. Cost me extra money to send to shimano and I don't have a reel to fish with. Either this reel was used and returned before or is a lemon (defect) from factory. My tranx 301 and 401 have no issues like this.

From: S.C: SAN LEANDRO 8/25/21

Comments: Great power fishing reel. I have one paired up with an IMX Pro 7'4" H froggin' rod & 50lbs power pro braid. Takes a little bit to get 'er dialed in but once you do it's game on. I have a second one for Texas rigs & big worm fishing. That one is paired with a Shimano Expride 7'7" H and it absolutely rocks. Smooth, powerful, reliable and it casts a mile. It's a Curado K on steroids. Another awesome product by Shimano.

From: Unknown: Wisconsin 8/23/21

Comments: Awesome! I recently got the tranx 200 and paired it with a heavy Dobyns rod, and it freaking smoked em. The tranx is everything you'll need and more from a reel. It works topwater, jigs, and deep diver crank baits like a dream. Also, it'll launch a spook about a mile if you tune it right. Definitely recommend it, might get another one.

From: Will: Unknown 8/4/21

Comments: Had this reel for two years now, caught hundreds of bass, bunch of pike, musky, and a plethora of saltwater fish down in Florida. if you're after a shockingly powerful bait castor you're not going to find anything better, but that power comes at a cost, the reel feels heavy and powerful in your hand. I wouldn't purchase this reel for anything other than frogging, A-rigs, and/or big swimbaits. a great reel one step down is a Curado 200k if you want a good balance of power and versatility.

From: Kole: Michigan 6/28/21

Comments: Purchased this casting reel for my grandson who is really into fishing and is enjoying using it.  He has got so many fish with it here in Michigan and Florida.  He loves it and it is easy to use.

Great reel. Using it to throw soft swimbaits around 2-3ounces. Seems robust.

From: MikeL Nashua, NH 4/5/21

Comments: Great reel I have the 401 also perfect for smaller to mid size swimbaits in fresh and salt water.

From: Colm: Florida 1/16/21

Comments: Best reel for the price! I use this throwing a Hinkle glide, it has more than enough power, casts a mile and is very smooth. I have plans to purchase more of these.

From: EJ: Dallas, TX 1/6/21

Comments: I purchased the tranx early this winter and have have had a few days out cranking on it and so far it has met all expectations and is a great reel a true workhorse! I would highly recommend this reel!

From: Jared: Massachusetts 1/3/21

Comments: Bought this to throw bigger baits on my E6X swimbait rod. So far so good. You get what you pay for and I haven't been let down by Shimano yet!

From: DH: Washington State 12/28/20

Comments: Smooth, have it on a Dobyns 735 throwing a bull shad, Huddleston 68 and Jackall Gantarel jr worth every penny in my opinion.

From: Jose: Manor, TX 12/17/20

Comments: Really a strong reel. Casts extremely well and is more than suitable to handle anything from spinnerbaits to large crankbaits and swimbaits. I would highly recommend to anyone.

Comments:
Buttery smooth reel. It feels much more rigid and powerful than the curado K and it is. You won't be disappointed BUT it is not a swimbait reel. The line capacity is the same as the curado K. If you want a powerful 200 sized reel suited for throwing swimbait or heavy resistance lures look at the Daiwa Tatula 200.

Comments:
Bought this reel about a year ago. I have used it multiple times throwing A-rigs and swimbaits on a Dobyns Fury 795. Not a big fan of it. I put power pro 50lb braid to 15-20lb fluro leader and have had multiple backlashes with this reel. Yes, I have multiple baitcasters from Shimano and Daiwa that I never issues with like the Tranx 200. Have a Chronarch MGL with similar setup with zero issues. The Chronarch MGL is a great reel. The drag on the Tranx is, also, a problem. Even cranked down, it slips and is very inconsistent. Sometimes I crank it down with no issues, next time it's like I have completely backed it off but it's close to full pressure.I back off the drags on all my reels after I'm done fishing. There's a lot of play in the handle between the drag and gearbox too. Overall, not impressed. This one may just be a lemon. Wish I would have bought a Tatula 200 instead.

Comments:I bought this reel to put on my punching setup, and let me tell you, this thing is a beast. It feels great in the hands, incredibly smooth, and more power than you could need. I also took it down to Venice for a red fishing trip and it was a workhorse down there as well. I now throw swimbaits, big swim jigs, alabama rigs, and any powerfishing you could think of on top of punching. If you're on the fence just go ahead and buy it because you'll use it for way more than you think. I have it paired with a 7'7 XH Phenix Feather rod and its an amazing setup.

From: Unknown: Guntersville, AL 2/24/20

Comments:This reel is phenomenal! Just a pleasure to have this reel. Smoother than any reel I have used this far. I have fished this reel for bullseye snakehead down here in south Florida for the last year and it is a tank! This reel does take a little time to wear the drag in, however, the more you use it, the more comfortable it gets. Also this reel feels AMAZING in the hands. I have this paired up with a heavy shimano zodias. The combo is unreal, do yourself a favor and pick this reel up! the quality you get out of this reel for the price is unmatched within it's class.

From: J: Lake Worth, FL 2/19/20

Comments:Game changer right here, so happy they came out with a 200 size in the Tranx. Bought one when they first got released and zero issues. The presentations you can throw on this reel are endless. Do yourself a favor and get one. You won't be disappointed.

From: Jordan: Florida 1/30/20

Comments:Bought 1. Now own 3, workhorse workhorse workhorse! Will pull big stuff all day no problem. This thing is like a built up motor, the harder you drive it the better it runs, will not disappoint

From: Shag: International Falls, MN 1/23/20

Comments:Its AMAZING, casts a mile on zero brakes, feels solid and never felt a retrieve this smooth.

From: Henry: Texas 8/22/19

Comments:I absolutely love the Tranx 200! You can literally tow a boat with this reel. Low profile with a massive gear box that fits & feels so comfortable o my hand. Shimano did an excellent job producing this reel. Excellent investment for the money.

From: Mac Collins :Tucson Arizona7/12/19

Comments:This reel is nice straight out of the box.All my reels are shimano and this one is just a beefed up curado k.However, I used my first tranx 200 XHG fresh water only. I used it for frogging.Since it's a saltwater reel too, I used it at the beach just once. After that, the reel wasnt the same.It started clicking and grinding when I would turn the handle. I did rinse it after I used it in saltwater so I dont know what the issue was. I ended up getting rid of it and bought another one because I loved the reel for my bass fishing. Well I didnt learn the first time I guess but I used my second reel at the coast again and long story short. The exact same thing happened.Clicking and grinding. I would love to get another but I just cant afford to spend 200 ever time. I'll just take my loss with this reel. Again, all my reels are shimano and perform great. It's just this real that has given me issues

From: Unknown 6/25/19

Comments:This reel is amazing. I have used this reel for a straight with small crankbaits and it wings them pretty darn far for a baitcaster. Im a big walleye fisherman and this reel is perfect

From: Hunter6/25/19

Comments:I love it! It has the feel in the hand of the Curado 200K, but the power it has is unbelievable. The regular Tranx handle they put on there is a nice touch too. By far my new favorite huge jig and deep crank reel.

From: Jack:St. Louis, MO3/5/19

Comments:This is a phenomenal reel.
I've been using the Tranx 200 alongside a Curado 200k for the past couple months for fishing the bays in socal. I've also used the tranx to throw larger baits and smaller swimbaits and glidebaits in the 3/4 - 1.5 ounce range. I must say, this thing is great. It's the same design and body as a curado k, but the internals are beefed up drastically. The handle is longer, which I love, and you can tell how well it's sealed for saltwater. I've fished this thing a lot, just with a brief freshwater wash after each long session, and it feels as good as it did on day 1. The drag is also beefed up really well. Shimano claims 13 lbs, but I'm pretty sure that is a conservative rating. I measured mine at 15lbs, and the drag is smooth. For fishing calicos and other fishing when you're fishing high drag, you can really tell the smoothness of the drag in comparison to the curado, which seemed to be a bit jerky on those higher drag settings. I can't pinpoint it, but for some reason this thing also feels a lot more comfortable throwing larger baits than the curado.
For what it is and the price, I have to give this thing a 9.5/10. I'm a bay fishing enthusiast for spottys, calicos, corvina and halibut here in socal, but go to college in Oregon, where I fish for river smallmouth in the Willamette and Columbia rivers. These rivers are brackish and salty, as they are connected to the ocean. Fishing up there did a toll on my curado k, so I'm excited to have this reel for that purpose as well.If there are any aspects I could criticize the tranx for, it would be casting distance and smoothness when turning the handle. They are both good, but not as good as the curado, which I should emphasize is phenomenal in both of those regards. The reeling is still super super smooth and silent, but it just doesn't have that almost weightless, effortless reeling that the curado has.
If I were exclusively fishing for bass freshwater and could only have 1 reel, I'd still take the curado, but as a second reel, especially for throwing the larger jigs, swimbaits, etc, or if you fish any saltwater, pick up the tranx.
