A-B
Action
In reference to a fishing rod, action refers to the flexibility or stiffness of the rod, describing where it bends under load. Action is also commonly used to describe the movement of a fishing lure.
Ambush Point
A location where bass hide and wait to attack prey.
Angler
Anyone who is fishing with a rod and reel.
Backlash
A tangle that occurs when the line overruns the spool on a baitcasting reel.
Bait
Can refer to any artificial lure or live offering used to catch fish.
Baitfish
Small, natural prey fish like minnows and shad that are a primary food source for larger predatory fish like bass.
Baitcaster
A commonly used synonym for a casting reel.
Bed Fishing
Targeting bass when they are shallow on their spawning beds.
Bladed Jig
Generic term for a vibrating jig, often referred to as a ChatterBait. This is a jig with a blade attached to the head, which produces flash and vibration as you reel it through the water column.
Blow-Up
When a fish breaches the surface of the water on baitfish or a topwater lure.
Boat Flip
Landing a fish by swinging it directly into the boat with your rod rather than using a net.
Breakline
A change in depth or contour that can hold fish.
Bucketmouth
Slang for a largemouth bass.

Carolina Rig
A weighted soft plastic rig used for dragging soft plastics along the bottom. A weight and bead are placed on the main line ahead of a swivel, creating a separation between the weight and the bait, which allows it to move naturally along the bottom while the weight and bead make a noise to attract bass.
Casting Reel
A type of fishing reel that’s mounted on top of a rod, with a revolving spool that provides power and precision. Ideal for casting heavier lures and power fishing techniques. Unlike spinning reels, anglers control line flow using their thumb and must adjust the reel's brake settings to prevent backlash.
ChatterBait
Z-Man’s brand name for a vibrating jig, also known as a bladed jig.
Choke Point
A narrow area that funnels baitfish and attracts predators.
Cold Front
A sudden drop in temperature that often slows the bite.
Confidence Bait
A lure an angler trusts and fishes most effectively.
Cover
Anything that provides shade or protection for bass, including weeds, docks, stumps, rocks, vegetation, etc.
Crankbait
A hard-bodied lure, crankbaits feature a fixed bill that’s designed to dive quickly, deflect off rocks, and wobble erratically through the water.
Crawdad
Also known as a crayfish or crawfish, refers to an artificial lure that imitates crustaceans which is a primary food source for bass.
Creature Bait
Versatile, soft-plastic creature baits, often have multiple appendages that mimic various aquatic life, such as crawfish, lizards, bugs, tadpoles, and more.
Creek Channel
A submerged stream bed within a lake that serves as a bass highway.
Current Break
A tree, rock, man-made structure, or object that slows or deflects water flow, and often holds fish.
Deep Structure
Offshore features like humps, rocks, trees, or ledges that attract bass.
E-G
Eddy
A small whirlpool or calm area, often forming behind an obstruction like a rock or log, which creates a calmer, slower-moving pool. An eddy can be a prime spot for fishing as it allows predatory fish to rest and ambush prey without expending energy fighting the current.
ElaZtech
A stretchy, highly durable plastic formula used in most of Z-Man’s soft baits. Commonly used to describe durable TPE soft plastics.
Electronics
Slang term for fish finders and sonar units used to locate bass.
Fan Cast
Casting in a wide spread pattern to cover water more efficiently.
Feeding Window
A specific time or set of conditions during the day when bass are actively feeding.
Finesse Fishing
Using light line and subtle presentations to entice pressured fish.
Flipping
Short, precise presentations to cover in close quarters.
Floating Worm
A soft plastic worm with a high buoyancy that allows it to float toward the surface.
Football Jig
A jig with a wide, football-shaped head design that’s ideal for deflecting off structure and dragging along rocky bottoms.
Forage
A food source for bass in a body of water. Forage can represent shad, crawdads, bluegill, insects, frogs, or anything else that bass are eating.
Gear Ratio
Indicates the number of times the spool rotates for every one full turn of the handle. A higher gear ratio means the spool spins faster, which allows for quicker line retrieval, while a lower ratio translates to added cranking power for slower retrieves or fighting larger fish.
Graph
Slang for a fishfinder or sonar unit.
Grub
A grub, is soft plastic bait with a curly tail.
H-L
Hard Bait
A general term for a hard-bodied lure, including crankbaits, jerkbaits, spoons, spy baits, blade baits, tail spinners, and more.
Hawg
Slang term for a big bass.
Head Shake
The violent shaking of a bass’s head when hooked.
Hollow Body Frog
A soft, hollow-bodied topwater bait shaped like a frog. As opposed to a poured soft plastic toad.
Hookset
The act of driving the hook into a fish’s mouth.
Hook-Up Ratio
The percentage of bites that result in a fish being successfully hooked.
Hydrilla
A common submerged aquatic plant that provides bass habitat.
Jerkbait
A slender minnow-shaped lure designed to dart erratically when twitched to mimic a struggling or fleeing baitfish. Also referred to as a rip bait.
Jig
A weighted hook often dressed with a silicone skirt and soft plastic trailer.
Kayak Fishing
Bass fishing from a kayak for stealth and mobility.
Kicker Fish
The largest fish in tournament anglers 5-bass weigh bag.
Laydown
A fallen tree lying in the water that provides cover.
Leader
An additional section of line that’s tied between the mainline and lure. Fluorocarbon leaders are used to reduce visibility, while monofilament leaders can act as a “shock leader” for added stretch and improved hook-up ratios.
Line Twist
When fishing line coils and tangles due to improper spooling or lure spin.
Livewell
A tank or compartment in a boat used to keep caught fish alive.
Lure
An artificial bait made of plastic, rubber, metal, or wood, designed to imitate the appearance and movement of natural prey like fish, insects, or crawfish.

Main Lake Point
A point extending into the lake from the main body of water.
Mainline
The primary fishing line that is spooled directly onto the reel.
Match The Hatch
Choosing natural lure colors that mimic local forage.
Ned Rig
A finesse technique using a small stickbait rigged on a mushroom-head jig that allows the bait to sit upright on the bottom.
Neko Rig
A wacky-style rigging technique, Neko Rigs involve inserting a nail weight into the head of a worm or soft plastic bait, often using an O-ring or tube to secure the hook to the middle of the bait.
O-Ring
A rubber ring used to rig wacky worms, hold the hook securely, and reduce torn-up soft baits.
Offshore
Fishing away from the shoreline, often targeting deeper structure.
Overhang
Tree branches or vegetation extending over the water.
Paddle Tail
A soft plastic swimbait with a tail that thumps during retrieve.
Pattern
A repeatable set of conditions or bass tactics where bass are consistently found.
Pitching
A casting technique for close, quiet presentations.
Plastics
General term for soft baits like worms, craws, or creature baits.
Plug
Slang term for a crankbait or hard-bodied lure.
Point
A tapering stretch of land extending into the water.
Popper
A topwater lure with a concave face that mimics fleeing baitfish and makes a popping sound and a splash when twitched on the surface.
Power Fishing
An aggressive, fast-paced bass fishing style.
Q-S
Reaction Bite
When bass strike out of instinct or surprise, typically associated with moving baits.
Retrieve
The act of reeling in a lure with various speeds or cadences.
Riprap
A loose layer of man-made rock that attracts baitfish and bass.
Rod Power
Refers to the overall strength rating or backbone of a rod. From ultralight to XXX-heavy. Heavier power rods are used for heavier lures, stronger hook sets, and fighting large fish, while lighter power rods are geared for smaller lures and finesse presentations.
Run-And-Gun
Moving quickly between multiple spots to find active fish.
Schooling Fish
Groups of bass chasing bait together.
Shad
A common food source and forage baitfish for bass.
Shaky Head
A finesse jighead that’s often paired with a straight-tail worm.
Sight Fishing
Targeting fish that are visible in clear water, or bedding in the shallows.
Skipping
Skimming a bait across the surface to reach under docks or overhanging cover.
Soft Plastic Bait
Soft baits are made from a flexible synthetic material that's molded into many shapes that imitate worms, craws, bluegill, or baitfish.
Spinnerbait
A fishing lure with a weighted head, wire frame, and spinning blades that create flash and vibration to mimic baitfish.
Spinning Reel
A fishing reel that mounts below the rod and features a fixed spool with an open-faced design. Uses a bail to release the line and a spinning rotor to wind it back onto the spool. Spinning reels are versatile, easy to use, and effective at casting light lures, making them popular for finesse fishing and with anglers of all skill levels.
Spool
The part of a fishing reel that holds the fishing line.
Structure
The physical features of the bottom of the lake or river, including rock piles, contours, and humps.
Suspended Bass
Fish holding off the bottom or around cover in mid-water.
T-Z
Tackle
A general term that refers to all types of fishing equipment.
Taper
The shape and flexibility of a fishing rod that determines how it bends under pressure. Taper is often interchangeably used with “action” and dictates a rod’s performance in casting, hook-setting, and fighting fish.
Texas-Rig
Topwater
Lures that float or create action on the surface of the water.
Trailer Hook
An additional hook that’s commonly added to the shank of a buzzbait or spinnerbait to improve hook-up rates with short-striking or uncommitted fish.
Transducer
The sonar device that sends and receives sonar signals to display an image of what’s beneath the surface.
Trolling Motor
A small electric motor that’s mounted at the front of a bass boat that offers quiet and precise movement for enhanced boat positioning.
Tube Bait
A hollow-bodied plastic lure with multiple thin, flexible tentacles, used to mimic crawdads, goby, and baitfish. Tube baits are a staple for catching bass, especially smallmouth. Can be rigged with a jig head for a “death spiral” or bottom-hopping action, or Texas-rigged to fish through heavy cover.
Underpsin
A swimbait jighead with a small blade attached underneath that adds flash and attraction to soft plastic swimbaits.
Vegetation Line
The outer edge of submerged weeds.
Vertical Fishing
Presenting a lure straight down below the boat.
Wacky-Rig
A soft plastic worm hooked through the middle that creates unique fluttering action on the fall.
Walk-The-Dog
A side-to-side, slashing topwater retrieve motion that mimics a distressed or fleeing baitfish.
Weed Guard
The bristles located above the hook on a jig used to prevent snagging.
Weedline
The transition where vegetation stops growing.
Weight Peg
Whopper Plopper
A prop-style topwater lure that earns its name for its sputtering tail.
Worm
A soft-plastic artificial lure designed to mimic a real worm, typically associated with finesse fishing.
