Overview

Completely redesigned by Shimano engineers, the all-new Shimano Metanium MGL 150 B Casting Reel is the most advanced Metanium ever produced. A premier tool no professional or avid angler should be without, it features the never-before-seen Magnesium CoreSolid Body, which delivers next-level durability, rigidity, and sensitivity in a weight-reducing package. In addition to the new body, the Metanium MGL 150 B makes casting lightweight baits further and easier a reality by integrating the MGLIII spool which reduces spool inertia 17% over the previous generation. Thanks in part to the SVS Infinity Braking, the newest Metanium also provides the ultimate in casting adjustability to accommodate a wide range of lures and techniques.

Boasting the MicroModule main gear similar to the previous generation, this time Shimano upgraded it with a solid brass construction for enhanced durability and smoothness that will last a lifetime. Coupling that ultra-smooth brass gearing with Shimano’s Silent Tune technology results in reduced spool bearing vibration to maximize casting distance and improve cast feel. If you’re looking to take your tournament game to a whole new level, pick up the Shimano Metanium MGL 150 B Casting Reel and smoke your competition with the pinnacle of performance in the palm of your hand.

Brass GearsOkay okay okay okay shimano stop flexing on everyone. Ive torn apart reels as a hobby for the past seven years or so and the only thing that goes bad in higher end shimano reels, from heavy use, is typically the micro module gears. So go ahead and leave the non brass gears in Japan I’ll take the extra .5 ounce and have extended life from the brass gears. Reel is 100% gonna out last anything else you buy now in this price range. Exceptional reel. Imagine paying 600$ for an elite ti or an diawa sheesh.

Best reel I have ever ownedThis is the first truly high-end real that I have purchased. I have eight Currado 200s and Bantoms. It casts like a dream with the mgl spool, is super smooth and solid as a rock. I have it paired megabass x- bites and love it. Going to buy another one to pair with my Shimano 6’10 jerk bait Rod.

Must have reel by Shimano!Best decision I ever made! This real is buttery smooth and never backlashes. I primarily use 14-16lb flouro on it, but have also used 50lb braid as well. You cannot go wrong with this reel. I’ve caught so many fish on it over the last month I lost count, and it only get’s smoother over time.

Comments: Hands down the best reel on the Market from any company. I fish lews highest end reels, diawas a d the Metanium. The metanium is just better in every area. It is SMOOTH I compare it to cutting warm butter. Casts very well, light, and can p with ease and comfortably. Just truly is hands down the best reel that Shimano makes and best on the market today. If you are in the Market for a $400 reel. Please but this a d.you will know too! Like I said my high end reels are Lews Elite TI, Pro TI, Bantam, Zillion, SV TW and this reel is cream of the crop

Comments: Picked up 3 of these for part of my bass lineup, paired with a 734 NRX+, 704 Conquest and a 765 Conquest. What's not to like? Palms great, reels super smoothly and casts great with solid distance. I have a 734 Lamiglas SI paired with a Chronarch MGL that also feels amazing, and with the price point, I'd probably opt for another Chronarch over a 4th Metanium. However, if you're building your first or second dream combo, treat yourself to the Metanium.

From: David: Nor Cal 10/2/23

Comments: This is the best of the best. I have several older Shimano reels and have always had real great experience with their reels. I would say it's cost is on the high side and many avid fishermen couldn't or wouldn't purchase it. I would say you get what you pay for. I have a couple in its price range and this is the third. To me well worth the money. It should rest a life time.

From: Ed: Alabama 5/11/23

Comments: Just picked up this reel a few weeks ago. Have only used it once. I have been a Shimano guy for years. Still use my Curado E7's. First off, palming of this reel was a new for me. A lot smaller than my E7's. After casting with a squarebill for awhile totally felt perfect. I'm usually one who doesn't use the brakes to much on my reels. I don't have it completely dialed in yet, but once I get it figured out, I have no doubt this thing will cast a country mile. Very very smooth feeling. Can't wait until I catch a big Cal Delta or Clearlake bass to see how the drag is. Reel feels super solid. As the day went on, I started to realize the difference between this reel and lower priced ones. It just feels more refined. I will be purchasing another.

From: Rob: Fairfield, Ca 3/12/23

Comments: This was my first high end reel I've purchased. Not only have I fished the heck out of it, loving every cast and catch, I've found myself allured by its sleek and now scratched presentation. Sure it was shinier and much cleaner out of the box, but after 2 whole seasons of use she still purrs with delight while I throw my beloved crankbaits, spinners and jigs into the murky depths. I joined this reel with a megabass super destroyer and every time I look at the pair i'm made to feel some kind of way. Sure there's better out there, but not by much and I don't care because I've never known, and will never need to know perfection. This reel is just right. Has the specs to do just about anything and will last a very long time.

From: Jeffrey: Appleton, WI 3/11/23

Comments: Top off the line product. I have had no problems at all with any of my shimano reels. I get to concentrate on fishing and putting that fat slob in the boat rather than messing with my equipment. They are more expensive but well worth it to not have all the frustrations that come along with faulty stuff.

From: Adam: Tucson AZ 1/5/23

Comments: Great reel very light weight. Cast lures a long way very smooth. It will handle weightless senkos with no problem.

From: Paul: Dallas, Texas 12/31/22

Comments: I've been a Shimano guy for some time. However, I was disappointed in this reel and have recently returned it to TW. It really doesn't cast that far as expected for an expensive reel. Also, the brakes seemed to be ineffective. I had all brakes on, in full, and still got backlashes! Disappointed!

From: Unknown: 10/20/22

Comments: Lightweight, strong, easy to cast, and comfortable in my hand, the new Metanium is an outstanding reel.

From: Unknown: 10/14/22

Comments: Just decided to get back into fishing a Baitcaster after over 30 years so I decided to spend the money and buy a good one to start. Baitcaster's defiantly came a long way since my last experience and this time it was a good one. The reel is built solid, easy initially tune and adjust when switching out lure weights. I probably through over 50 cast before I had my first backlash and that's because I got to cocky. The real cast great and continues to get better as I build my skills. I definitely haven't unlocked all it potential yet. Now I'm contemplating to buy the DC to see the difference if any.

From: Bill: Midland, PA 9/4/22

Comments: This reel is amazing. Compared to my 2 Chronarchs, it has a noticeably higher quality "feel" to it (may be the extra weight). I have it paired with a 7'M Fantasista Premier and 40lb braid, and it can cast a weightless 4" senko 20-30 yards, easily. With a bit of weight I cast into my backing consistently. Compared to the Chronarch 150 MGL, it doesn't cast light stuff quite as well, but it's more comfortable to hold, and is every bit of good as a caster with anything weighing 1/4oz or more. Highly, highly recommend this reel to anyone that can afford it. This is a flagship reel that is more than worth it's flagship cost. I'll be buying at least two more.

From: Lynn: Utah 8/29/22

Comments: Recently got my second Metanium. These reels are amazing. I use one for all kinds of baits like poppers, spy baits, jerkbaits and weightless plastics on a Poison Adrena 6'11" M+. I've also thrown spinnerbaits and buzz baits with that combo. The reel performs flawlessly.

From: Matt: Longview, WA 5/11/22

Comments: The Metanium is the first reel I felt warrants a review. First Metanium I purchased had a crunchy gearbox and a sticky star drag. Tacklewarehouse return was extremely fast and simple; I got my replacement in a week and in time for the trip I was planning on using it for. The body: luxurious and much smaller than other reels I have from shimano. You'll pick it up and immediately feel how light it is due to magnesium body. It feels and looks like a high-end reel. The cast: people have explained the cast like "cutting through room temperature butter" and I cannot agree more. The first cast, brakes all the way up and tension knob pretty tight cast about 10 yards further than some of my other older reels on less brakes. Insane. Once I tuned it to my liking, I can cast weightless senkos as far as the other guys with a pegged 1/2oz weight. You will also notice the braking system controlling your line as the bait hits the water. I put this up against a curado DC any day and you'll see how much butter it is at controlling backlash. The bite: I can't explain it better than you can feel the bite in the reel. The rod I'm using is a JWR IMX Pro 7'5 for Carolina rigging. The bite actually is felt in your reel. The fight: effortless. Not even remotely fair. The reel effortlessly pulls in line as you fight fish (mine were in 30 ft of water). The drag system, albeit 11lbs, is more than enough. Final thought: Going to replace all my reels with the Metanium. I recommend maxcuatro braid if you're a braid user. I wanted some high-end line to pair with us and I could not be happier.

From: Michael: Rancho Cucamonga, CA 5/2/22

Comments: I'm replacing older high-end gear. Specifically a Metanium Mg7(Core) and Aldebaran Mg7(Core51). I ordered both the US and JDM Metanium MGL151B. The JDM arrived first. I pressed down the thumb bar, and during that little bit of play before the spool re-engages, was a raspy, scraping in the handle where it enters the gear side plate. The JDM reel felt a little tight from grease and began to loosen up, but every time I would press down the thumb bar I would hear it(and feel it) to some extent. Two surfaces scraping or rubbing. Honestly, I couldn't believe I got a lemon. A few days later TW delivered my US version. I pressed down the button, turned the handle and my wife says "I heard it, that one does it too..." She was 15ft away, on the other side of the room. I'm sure if you are casting, the handle will move forward and you could miss it, but at this price point, we are paying for a level of refinement. No way I got two lemons, and I'm sure if you check your Metanium, it does it too. Unfortunately, you will not be able to un-hear or un-feel the raspy scraping noise/feeling.

From: Joel: WI 4/11/22

Comments: Light, compact and smooth as silk. Cast great with a pin point break system.

From: Unknown: 4/4/22

Comments: The brass gears in this reel will handle just about anything. I also use line as small as 10 lb. On it. I have five of these reels and have had nothing but smooth performance out of them. I have been waiting for this reel my whole life.

From: Michael : Mentone Ca. 4/3/22

Comments: I bought the Metanium last summer and fished it for almost a year before writing a review. Its not a cheap reel by any means, but it is absolutely worth the money if you can afford it. I bought one from TW and loved it so much I bought the JDM version a couple months later. Absolutely the smoothest bait caster I've ever used. Easy to fine-tune and casts a mile. If you're looking for a top of the line reel, it doesn't get much better than the Metanium.

From: Colin: Bayfield, CO 3/30/22

Comments: Fantastic reel, casts a mile, very smooth with great brakes! A must!

From: Jeff: Jupiter, FL 3/26/22

Comments: Absolutely the best reel out there!!! I'm a shimano and daiwa man. In the 120-180 price range I think Daiwa makes a better reel with the tatula series but in the high end category Shimano no question is a superior reel. This thing gets a 10/10 for me. I use this as my main Texas rig reel. I can throw a senko with a 3/16 ounce weight a country mile. Have it paired with a Loomis NRX 873 and it's my favorite setup.

From: Hunter: Chattanooga; TN 2/19/22

Comments: Great reel out of the box, I would even say the best reel I have ever used out of the box. But after about 9 months of fishing on the weekends... It does get geary, even after a full bearing soak and full teardown and cleaning. The casting is superb, but the geary feeling and sound does get worse as you use the reel.

From: Joe: Texas 1/31/22

Comments: After Trying several brands of casting reels I am glad to upgade to the Metanium. They are easy to Tune looking forword to the new season with them. They fit the hand like a glove the smoothist retrieve the grip on the handle is the rihgt cise for my hand. I know they are not the cheapist reals on the market but the metanium is going to make fishing easier and fun.

From: Unknown: 1/16/22

Comments: I've been a Shimano guy most of my life and the Metanium line has been some of my favorite reels ever made. This is a great reel but the issues I have is like most high end Shimanos, after 6 months of normal/heavy use, the reel does a 180 and doesn't feel anything like it did when it was new. It's all geary feeling and rough, even after getting it fully serviced. My Steez A is 3 years old and has been beaten and heavily used and it still feels exactly like it did when it was brand new. I've slowly been switching over to Daiwa and haven't been disappointed one bit. Shimano's are the best reels right out of the box but I'm learning Daiwa's are better long term.

From: Jim: MN 1/16/22

Comments: Shimano has been my go to reel for years, and the Metanium series including the MGL 150B is one of the reasons why. The light weight and the long castability along with the various styles of fishing that can be done with the Metanium's make this the only reel you need. Ignore the price point, once you fish with these you'll find it hard to go to something else.

From: Unknown : WA 12/31/21

Comments: Smooth and soft as room temperature butter. I have a bunch of Curados and decided to step my arsenal up a bit. The difference is noticeable. Nothing wrong with the Curados, but this Metanium is next level. I will buy more of these reels.

From: Robert: Roseville, CA 12/30/21

Comments: The Metanium MGL 150 B doesn't need a review at this point. If you can afford them, buy them. At this price point, it's hard to recommend any other brand or model. It's the perfect real that can pretty much do everything. Lightweight, casts like a dream, drag is smooth and powerful, and built tough and precise. I used to think all I needed was a fleet of Curado's, now all I need is a fleet of Metaniums. Once you own one, you can't help but want to buy more.

From: Unknown: California 12/29/21

Comments: Just a phenomenal reel. I've used several of the top brands (Diawa and Abu) fishing reels and have just settled in to sticking with Shimano Metaniums. I have 8 of them now in differing gear ratios. They are a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Tip, wait for some of the amazing TackleWarehouse sales and buy a couple then! We fish a lot. Probably about 4 days a week on average and they feel just as smooth after 2-3 years as they did the first year. Just top of the line reels!

From: Unknown: 12/29/21

Comments: Im not sure what can be said about this reel that hasn't been said. From a reel standpoint, its a 10/10 If price is an issue and be honest they aren't cheap and at some point it's an issue, wether its getting your first or trying to fit a whole boat full. But money aside this reel is unbeatable. Casting, comfort, build, drag. It's all here, if you can then you should treat yourself. You wont be disappointed. I only have 2 but i sure want a few more.

From: Jason: Austin, TX 12/26/21

Comments: Absolutely amazing reel, it feels flawless in hand and cast beautifully. I love the core solid frame design; Shimano needs to update more of their reels to use it. It is a little scary pulling off the small side plate to adjust internal brakes when your hands are cold. Most of my other combo's have Curados of various generations, this reel makes me want to upgrade all of them!

From: Caleb: Alabama 12/9/21

Comments: Absolutely the smoothest reels on the market. Been using them for 3 years now and would not have anything else in my boat.

From: RK: Tennessee 11/20/21

Comments: I bought my first Metanium B in April 2020 and I have been blown away! I've added 3 more Metaniums since and every one of them have performed flawlessly. I had been holding onto some my older model reels like Core 100's, Chronarch D series and Curado E series but I have sold most of them and upgraded to the newest Metanium. It is that good. Don't hesitate to pull the trigger on one if you're wavering!

From: Kris: Weatherford, TX 11/16/21

Comments: Metanium is smooth as butter. After several trips it still feels like quality in your hands.

From: Scott: Georgia 11/7/21

Comments: I have a Curado DC, Scorpion DC, Curado K, SLX DC, Diawa Tatula, Multiple Lews Reels and Abu Garcia's. This reel is better than them all. I would trade two Curado K reels in a heartbeat for a Metanium. It can cast a mile and the retrieve is buttery smooth. Well worth the money.

From: Dan: Florida 10/20/21

Comments: Nice at first. But the gears get the typical "geary" feeling that many shimano reels inevitably develop over time. In this case, a very short amount of time.

From: Unknown: 10/12/21

Comments: The most amazing reel in my inventory. I have a ton of Shimano's but the Met is top of the class in regards to perfromance. Expensive but worth it. Extremely satisfied.

From: Ernie: Kentucky 9/22/21

Comments: I just bought my first Metanium the 6.2 gear and wow all I can say is wow. I've thrown Diawa reels the last 5 years and am currently selling off the Diawa's to purchase more Shimano reels. This reel is by far the smoothest, easy casting, most powerful reel I've ever had the pleasure of using. I paired it up with A Medium Moderate Carbon lite 2.0 for throwing crankbaits and chatterbaits and pulled in 2 39.5" Northerns on a half oz chatterbait like they were 12" bass. This reel has so much power the fish don't stand a chance. My birthday is next week and I plan on pleasing myself to the 7.1 model and matching it up with a 7'1 Medium heavy fast Johnny Morris Platinum Signiture and using it exclusively for chatterbaits. Shimano hit a home run on this reel forsure. The price is definitely up there but you can tell this was built with high quality parts and should last a lifetime. I will forever be throwing Shimano reels from here on out!!

From: Unknown: Michigan 9/14/21

Comments: Amazingly smooth reel. Feels great in my hand, have caught a couple good fish on it and used a wide variety of lures. I have wanted one for some time now and I'm happy I finally bought it. Would definitely recommend.

From: Daniel: California 9/1/21

Comments: Hands down one of the best reels I've ever owned!! Thanks to tackle warehouse's after pay I am able to enjoy fishing like the pros!!!

From: Unknown: 8/29/21

Comments: I normally fish Daiwa Steez A Reels but they are so hard to get lately and seem to sell out as soon as they come into stock. I ordered this one to try until I can get more Steez A reels and it seems to be a pretty good reel. It is lightweight, smooth and almost cast as good as the Daiwa does.

From: Unknown 8/28/21

Comments: Best reel ever hands down will cast any weight lure with ease, I've caught everything from 1-6 pound bass and a couple 40+ inch northern and this thing handles it no issues.

From: Alex: Unknown 8/26/21

Comments: This reel is crazy! Smooth, light and casts a mile! I've used the previous model and this one blows it out of the water. Smaller profile than the previous model as well. My favorite reel by far, worth every penny.

From: Unknown 8/23/21

Comments: This reel is amazing. It's expensive but it's worth every penny. I can throw a weightless Senko a mile. I will be buying more of these for sure.

From: Emitt: Unknown 8/19/21

Comments: I love this reel, so much so that I have purchased more than one! It makes long casts, it's easy to adjust for varying conditions, it has very smooth and quiet gearing, and the brake is reasonably stout.

From: Unknown: 8/19/21

Comments: This reel is excellent! smoothest reel i have ever used. my only complaint is that the width of the spool is a bit tight. i wish Shimano would put all of the guts of the Metanium into thew SLX MGL 70 frame.  the 70 is the most comfortable reel i have used but the Metainum is the smoothest. i would the give the MET  4.5 stars.

From: James 7/28/21

Comments: What they say is true, if you buy one, you'll want to buy more. Slowly replacing my fleet of Curado DC reels with these. Love the Core Solid rigidity like what the Bantam has. Bombs casts and smooth on the retrieve. Have this Met HG paired up with an Expride 7'2 MH and just got the JDM Metanium with the 70 spool to pair with an Expride 6'10 M for lighter lures.

From: Rob: Germantown, OH 7/28/21

Comments: I have 2 of these metaniums and no other reel comes close. I own a lot of other brands and shimano seems to build their reels alot better. you pay a higher price but you basically get what you pay for. I've learned that the hard way in trying to keep buying other brands that are cheaper. If you have the budget for this reel there should be no doubt about this this reel.

From: Meng: Fresno, CA 7/27/21

Comments: Ive always been a fan of the Metanium MGL and with the new brass main gear this reel just got a whole lot smoother than last years. The overall size is slightly smaller so palming the reel is much more comfortable, I think its a winner.

From: Unknown: Camraillo, CA 7/18/21

Comments: I've used a variety of Shimano models over the last 10 years, but the Metanium is by far my absolute favorite. There is no comparison!

From: Brendon: North Carolina 7/12/21

Comments: This reel is the truth, I love it, its the best one I ever had and I done had some pretty good one by far this the best one I spooled it up with 50lb suffix with 17lb sunline and can all most cast the whole spool gonna get 2 more

From: Unknown: 7/11/21

Comments: best bait caster i have ever used.  I have 3 bait casters and this is the best! been using it for at least 20 outings and have not had 1 backlash yet and it casts extremely far! will be buying another one soon!

From: Unknown: 7/5/21

Comments: This reel is an incredibly smooth caster. I've been using it with 20lb 832 braid, and haven't one issue with it. Set it up with 2 breaks on, and set the dial to 3 and that was it. Extremely smooth reeling. Very comfortable to fish all day. It's a beautiful reel too, matches perfectly on my Loomis 852 JWR.

From: Unknown: 6/19/21

Comments: Feels smooth and cast really nice.

From: Wade: 6/12/21

Comments: I just bought this reel last weekend. Took me a minute to really get used to it. But wow, on a calm day wow, this reel just casts so far. Like far. I never knew they make reels that cast this far. 4 days later I ordered 3 more.

From: Unkown: 5/31/21

Comments: This is my 2nd Metanium. I loved my first one so well I bought my 2nd one. This reel is almost impossible to backlash and the casting distance is unbleviable.

From: John: 5/14/21

Comments: Used my stimmy to get a new Metanium MGL, I love this reel, its smooth and will cast great, its on a whole different level from sub $200 reels, you can say what you want about other reels, but in terms of feel and quality, the new Metanium MGL is the cats mittens...

From: Unknown: Florida 4/18/21

Comments: Love this reel! Easy to palm and smooth as butter casting.

From: Ron: New Iberia, LA 4/2/21

Comments: First reel I've found that I liked as much or better than the core. Yes, the 10 plus year old core. Casts longer, lighter and smoother.  I can finally start retiring my fleet of cores. Worth every penny even at 400$ and change.

From: Chris: Apopka, Florida 2/21/21

Comments: Shimano does it again. This reel cast so silky smooth. It only takes a flick of the wrist to cast a country mile. Once the reel is dialed in you never have to worry about backlashes. If a person can afford this reel, it's worth every penny.

From: Unknown: 2/4/21

Comments: I think I've owned just about every reel Shimano has come out with since 1995.. I've many many favorites I'll keep for life.. but to date & if I could only keep one.. it would be this one here.. to many reasons to list.. but bottom line they have taken their most modern tech & material and put it into this one ( I'm barring DC reels ) this reel has all the latest & greatest and it absolutely shows doing its job.. well worth spending the money.. it's a lifer.. will also go down as a classic as years pass by.

Comments: Great reel that is light powerful and casts smooth and far. I have several Curado's and I do not feel the added price is worth it for my needs. Great reel just too expensive for my needs.

From: Barry: Charlotte, NC 1/15/21

Comments: Absolutely phenomenal reel, super far casting, insane smoothness, super light and very comfortable to palm. I have the XG model paired with a Dobyns DX743 for Keitech casting jigs and it is an amazing combo. Best reel on the market!

Comments: I own a few of these reels. The MGL series is outstanding. Once you set it up for your style, This reel cast a long way. The MGL spool is a great upgrade to an already superior reel. If you have Bass that are pressured, this reel will allow you to stop the boat twice the distance ( not to spook them) and still cast past the fish so you can: Get the bait to the depth and Start your cadence before you get to the fish. A great positive for this reel that other reelR019s donR019t do easily. This one does it with little to no effort & buttery smooth. Great Reel and Worth the price. When you start boating more fish, you will be pleased that you spent the extra dollars, Well worth the cost for this reel. It handles bass from a few pounds to the teenerR019s (PB) with no problem. BUTTERY SMOOTH on cast and retrieve. Brass Micromodule gears are a testament to Shimano quality in their product. This is an Investment & will last for years if maintained. Go Wet a Line !!!

Comments:Pound for pound this is Shimano's best reel to date what many here are failing to mention is the brass gearing, that will last you an angling life time. of course the micro module gearing makes for super liquid smooth retrieves. Very modern looking reel, great lines and curves... treat yourself. highly recommend

Comments: Been using Shimano for quite some time. Honed, I really can't tell the difference between this 400 dollar reel vs a 200 dollar Shimano as far as performance. It's still a smooth, great casting reel but nothing special

From: Billy: Fayetteville, AR 11/29/20

Comments: Best reel out there! Casting smoth and super far! I love it.

From: Michael yaj: Fresno, CA 11/12/20

Comments:I bought this reel to replace a Core 51 that was getting a little tired. The Metanium is longer casting and has a smoother retrieve. The cast control system lets you dial the reel in for any lure. The reel excels in casting lighter lures. I will be purchasing several more.

From: Frank: San Diego, CA 10/29/20

Comments:Top of the line reel here, you wont be disappointed. Its what you expect from Shimano, the very best.

From: Mike: Nashville, TN 10/18/20

Comments:Super smooth reel. I love my shimano gear.

From: Kenneth: Port Saint Lucie 10/11/20

Comments: Without a doubt, this is the smoothest casting reel I have ever had. I would not normally spend that kind of money on a reel, but decided to treat myself. I have other Shimano reels and several Lee's, but this one takes top place. A smooth cast and buttery retrieve make it a pleasure to use. And it is light and small enough to palm. If you can afford to purchase one, you won't regret it.

From: Maury: Yantis, TX 10/10/20

Comments:I have a 2016 Metanium and this new model is even better. I can't believe how far and how good this reel cast, almost impossible to backlash.

From: John: 10/4/20

Comments:Super light and smooth. Like butter. Casts a mile and has legit power. Highly recommend

Comments: Held off on buying a bantam last year when I had heard about a new metanium and replacement for the curado 70, and im glad I did. Ive had this reel long enough to put some fish on it and really put it to the test. Simply put its an amazing reel that not only fishes great but looks great to. Ive been throwing mostly 1/16-1/8 shakey heads and mojo rigs with it. At first it seemed a bit temperamental using less then 3 brakes. Once you get a feel for it and have it dialed in the problems go away. The 1 piece frame makes it feel like solid like a metal framed reel. The position of the thumb bar makes it really easy to manage line. I don't have big hands so when I heard that it sits higher then other Shimanos I was worried I wouldn't like it. Once I got it and put it on a rod it was clear that the difference between the height of which it sits compared to other Shimanos is negligible. The frame itself is really narrow especially when compared to DC reels. Its casting distance is impressive even with 4 brakes on. Im not 100% sure why but the casting accuracy is impressive. My very first cast with it I was able to squeeze a palmetto bug under a bush hanging over the water. I saw the line jump and start to head into to deeper water, I reeled down, swung on, brought in my first fish and christened the reel... Yes, its an expensive reel but if your looking for a quality reel that is an absolute blast to fish take a hard look the 20 metanium.

From: Jeff: 9/7/20

Comments:Bought this reel after reading a lot of positive reviews and after using the curado DC. This reel comes out of the box very stiff, but after you put in some work with it and catch a few fish it gets unbelievably smooth. The SVS infinity breaking system works very well, you just have to know how to properly set and adjust your breaks. Casts a country mile, even while casting baits that have a lot of air resistance such as buzzbaits. Have it spooled with 15lb seagaur red label fluro and will be testing out 40lb power pro soon on it. The price is high but if you like high end tackle you wont be disappointed.

Comments:Can't believe I paid this much for a reel but I did. My first Shimano reel. Very impressed with the quality and smoothness. I always stayed away from Shimano reels because of there heavy weight and low pound drags. I use this for a frog reel and was finicky about that 12lb drag. Well I was right. Drag sometimes slips on hard hook sets deep in the salad on big bass. I have it cranked all the way and seems to be ok.We'll see how it holds up in the near future. I have to remind myself this reel was made for the Japan market. Other wise it casts great and I love the big handle and knobs for cranking them lunker's out of the salad. Just wish the drag had more lbs for heavy hook sets on big fish in deep cover. 12lbs is hardly enough for that style of fishing.

Comments: Pulled the trigger on this reel surrounding all the hype. I paired it with a Shimano Jackall Poison Adrena 6'11" as a do it all setup. As far as performance, I am extremely impressed by this reel. It is glassy smooth, extremely quiet, refined, and casts effortlessly. I find Shimano's svs infinity braking system to be finicky at times when fishing on windy days, or switching out lures. However, with this new Met B, I was able to bomb skirted and bladed lures from 3/16 to 1/2 oz (in the wind) with little brake adjustments. The line management on this reel is superb, and the braking system is more of a set and forget type. Noticeably less time wasted with backlashes and adjusting brake settings with the Met B. As far as ergonomics, the Met B is very compact. It is short and narrow at the same time. It feels like a very small round bait-caster that has the palm ability of a low profile bait-caster. However, it does sit higher on the rod compared to all my other Shimano reels. Sitting higher on the rod along with similar round reel ergonomics makes the Met B feel bigger than it actually is. Not a deal breaker, but definitely a negative for me. Both the Chronarch Mgl, and Curado 70 sit lower to the rod and (imo), are noticeably more comfortable to palm and fish with. Another thing I dislike about the Met B is the thumb bar. It doesn't wiggle, feel sticky, or anything. It just doesn't feel as responsive as a high end reel should. All that being said, I would still recommend the Met B because it out classes every other high end reel I own.

Comments: Well I bought this reel as a replacement for my metanium DC after I sold because I found out about the issue it has with going geary and I had actually had to send it in 1/2 season in...wasn't covered by warranty btw. I ordered this reel on memorial day and got it Friday that week, which I was very excited for. The reason I got the new metanium is because of the new brass gears that should be better then the aluminum. Main problem with the last generation of metaniums is the aluminum mico gears with part of the mainshaft being cut out to save weight most likely flexes under heavy load leading to gear teeth being stripped. The metanium mgl B does cast further then the metanium DC andis way smoother. The drag is so-so for the most part you do have to wretch it down more then usual. Unfortunately with my Metanium Mgl B, I got a dud with a bad set of gears that I quickly noticed a day after use. Another issue I have with my reel is the frame paint job has some imperfections that you can feel, maybe I'm being picky but then again I paid $400+ for a reel so I should expect it not have a imperfection in the piant job. I did send it back to shimano with over a month of use due the geary noise and feely getting really bad, so far they have covered the gear is issue. I am still trying to see I can get a new frame.might be pushing it but I paid $400+ for reel. Also the side plate B of the reel, with the SVS Infinity brakes, has a bad issue with any sand and/or grain that gets in will scratches the part between the sideplate and the frame...so just be prepared for that to happen. I know that I have been negative about the reel for the most part, but the reel definitely worth the price better then any thing else on the market. Problems with high end reels like the metanium are very uncommon so don't be worried. I got unlucky but things happen that's life. I would say the reel is basically perfect without the issues I had experienced.

Comments: Alright after some months of use here is the verdict.
Pros:
Easy casting no backlash often
Easy tuning
Cast smooth like butter honey sweet jesus
Ergonomically friendly
Robust solid frame no flex
Smooth drag.
Cosmetically elegant
Light weight
Cons:
Don't cast well with lots of line spool on
Narrow spool means deeper spool = line dont overlay well thus line tends to dig in especially braid.
Not braid friendly
Cast better with less line but then run to situation of low inch per turn.
Drag is a bit underpower for a solid reel. Can use more aggresive drag power.
Overall great reel for the money. If a shallower spool exist it will be nicer so you wont have to deal with low IPT when the spool is casted out and low capacity.

Comments: I bought this reel early June after it was back in stock. The reel was amazing during the first few fishing trips - cast a mile, hard to get a bird nest, and the the drag was creamy smooth. Unfortunately, it changed in less than a month - the drag started to give me "geary feelings". You can feel the gears bite on each other and small vibration when you turn the handle and it was really annoying. The same issue also happened to my Metanium DC. I did a lot of research online and it seems many other ppl have the same issue. I tried to dissemble the drag and put more Shimano grease to each parts and the reel felt smooth again. However, after another two fishing trips the same noise is coming back. I think this is a problem with the slim design and you can't get away with it. I will keep the reel but I am unlikely to buy another one.

Comments: Ok, so I initially picked up this reel back in late April, and was pretty unhappy with it so I returned it. However, after continuously seeing extremely positive reviews, I decided to give it another try. And. Oh. My. Goodness... This thing is insane. Took it out today and after dialing it in, it performed great on the 10 or so fish it dealt with, up to 3lbs. I then slapped on one of the berkley line counters and tossed out a 3/8oz swim jig on a 7'3 MH Poison Adrena and 50lb 832. On average, I got about 150ft on each cast with that setup (this will definitely go up over time). All the tolerances are very tight and everything is butter smooth and quiet. A couple things I should note on how I set it up. The manual says to put a drop of oil on the bearing and the brake collar every month or 5 times out, so I oiled both before taking it out right away. As far as settings, I started at a 3 brakes on, 1 off, and the dial at 2 or 3. The spool tension is a little tricky for me to adjust as this is the first reel I've ever fished with silent tune (for those unfamiliar, this is a spring between the spool and spool bearing to keep the spool from wiggling around too much), and even at the lightest spool tension there is hardly any side to side knock on the spool and I generally set my tension to just minimizing that play.

Comments:I'll make this short & sweet. I've most of Shimanos reels out past decade .. this one is my favorite .. has the silky smooth feeling of the chronarch MGL .. but has the stud looks of the bantam, love that they put a brass main gear in this one. Will last a life time. Typical shimano quality in Casting distance & retrieve .. home run Shimano .

From:Dean: Las Vegas 5/11/20

Comments:If you don't know how to properly dial in the brakes, stick to the DC and other reels with dials on the side plate reels like the guy below. This reel is out cast any other reel but you have to understand how centrifugal breaks work. Not the reel for everybody.

From: Jim: New York 5/13/20

Comments:The performance is as good or better compared to the 16 Metanium. It feels smoother which I'm guessing is due to the brass gearing.Personally, I like the way the 16 palms better.I have what I'd consider average size hands and the B is too small.

From:MC: 5/7/20

Comments: Yet another shimano home run .. I can't remember the last time they came out with a bad reel .. they just keep getting better and better and this one should not disappoint you . It honestly feels just like my chronarch MGL on the cast and retrieve . Silky smooth .. of course this one has some nicer upgrades - love that they put a brass gear in - will last you your lifetime . And the line guide is set closer to the spool - shimano listens to its fans . I'm a huge fan of the bantam mgl .. for me this is the upgraded version only with chronarch MGL silky smooth class .. ( make sense ? Ha ) .. Highly recommend the new mentanium.. have my paired up with a Dobyns Xtasy .. talk about visual eye candy . Wow. .. it's early but I've yet to find or feel a flaw . Price point is correct .

From: Dean: Las Vegas 5/4/20

Comments:Wow, super impressed! This is my first Metanium, won't be my last. Great profile, very compact and virtually no way for the line guide to pinch finger when resting on front. Spooled with 12lb mono, bombs 3/8oz, does awesome with 1/4oz, no complaints on distance, accuracy, or spool control. Doesn't get much, if any better than this. Worth the price.
