I had them since the first version in 2010I have 12 of them in the old and new version. Easy to clean. Used them inshore for redfish, drum, and speckled trout. Used them for largemouth bass. It is what it is for $99 sometimes you can find them for $89 and $79 on sale. Weekend warrior its a great reel. What I do is clean the grease out of the bearings, let the bearings dry, and lube with reel oil. After that, the reel throws further and adjusts better. I find they seem to attract dirt and it goes back to the original series built in 2010.

Fantastic valueBought the LFS in an 8.3:1 gear ratio for bottom contact techniques at the beginning of the season. After using all season, I ended up buying another one in 6.8:1 gear ratio for moving baits. I have fished mainly Shimano SLX and Curado and Daiwa Fuego, Tatula, and Alphas SV reels in the past. I have sold off my more expensive reels and now use the LFS models for my casting set ups. They are smooth, fit my hand well, cast far and controlled, easy to dial in and adjust when needed, breaking profile is excellent. It's a budget workhorse reel that just works. Highly recommend these reels.

I would get thisThis was my first casting reel that I got and it is pretty good. I would say that It is best for spinner baits, buzz baits, chatter baits, jigs, small swim baits and topwater. This reel is good for most things in the 1/4- 1.2 oz. In my opinion this is on of my favorite reels. The reel that bets it is the Lew’s KVD. I would recommend getting it.

Previous Feedback

Comments: I have two of these reels, one is my power finesse combo and the other is my lighter swimbait combo. Both have worked well for over a year, no problems.

From: Jerrod: California 7/19/23

Comments: Me and my grandfather had this reel out of the package it felt nice but we both had the same problem the drag kept slipping and I would get a Abu Garcia max pro instead of this.

From: Unknown: 6/6/23

Comments: One of the best budget reels on the market. Period! Super smooth and reactive brake system.

From: Blake: Louisiana 5/18/23

Comments: I've had my Speed Spool LFS for about a year. It's been one of my go to reels. If your looking for a budget reel. You can’t get much better in my personal opinion.

From: Jesse: Nebraska 4/14/23

Comments: Good reel, but be warned, components will start to fail before too long. I have 4 of these reels on the sideline because the anti-reverse has become unreliable.

From: Peter: South Carolina 2/3/23

Comments: I have a older one that works great and thought I would try a new one. Glad I did, just as smooth as a 200$ Shimano and almost cast as far. Tune in took 2mins. I don't see the need to spend more money on a reel, Lews may have hurt their high end reel sales with this workhorse.

From: Jethro: MD 9/12/22

Comments: I'm a budget minded, no-nonsense kind of guy and these fit the bill on both accounts. I've had 3 of these for about 10 years now and they are incredible, just keep going. A couple years ago I had Boca's swapped into them and now they cast like a reel costing 2-3 times as much. I've been a Shimano man my whole life but I must admit Lew's has made the benchmark in reels that combine budget, durability and performance for pricepoint. Buy one and have Boca's swapped right off and you just landed a $300 casting reel for less than half the cost.

From: Jamie: IN 8/4/22

Comments: I've had 3 of these for about 7 years. A couple years ago they needed some DEEP cleaning so i sent them off to a reel repair in Indy and had them swap Boca Bearings. WOW WOW WOW, the best 30 bucks i spent!!! Now they work like new and cast effortlessly. Except maybe for the SLX you will not get a better reel for any application under 100 clams.

From: Jamie: IN 7/29/22

Comments: Just a damn good reel in any gear ratio. Everytime one of my old reels finally quits this is what it's replaced with. I throw everything with em from 1oz punch rigs on 65lb braid, small cranks on 8lb fc, spinnerbaits, trick worms, deep divers, jigs n pigs.... You just can't beat 'em for the money. I've yet to have one even remotely faulty. If you've got a hundred bucks and need a new reel well, here it is.

From: Logan: Mobile, AL 7/4/22

Comments: I've got 4 of these reels in different gear ratios and they are all work horses ! I use them for everything from frogging to cranking . For $99 these reels can't be beat ! I like these much better than the Mach II reels . Easier to dial in and they hold up better over time

From: Patrick: Massachusetts 6/5/22

Comments: I have four of these and have owned them for a few years. I just performed my annual reel maintenance and realized I skip over my Lews every year. Why? They don't need it! They are as quiet and smooth as the day I got them. For $100 this is as good as it gets. They take a little getting used to if you are trying a Lews coming from other brand reels, but it is quick.

From: Jason: Unknown 1/31/22

Comments: Bought one and after a little over a year the handle goes backwards on the hook set.

From: Unknown: 12/29/21

Comments: Very satisfied with this reel at this price point. Aluminum frame and casts smoothly. Would definitely buy more again in other speed ratios. Don't sleep on this reel.

From: Chuck: Upstate, NY 12/10/21

Comments: One of the best options at this price point. Never gives me any trouble with casting and is not picky about types of line. Only complaint is the numbers around the brake dial faded away after the first season. Swapped out paddles for Winn knobs and it's a perfect setup.

From: Mike: Fort Worth Texas 11/30/21

Comments: I reached 100 bass on the Speed Spool this season and no complaints. Mine doesn't look good the paint chips kinda easy but it performs well. The bearings did slip once but I still feel I could get a couple more seasons with it. Highly recommend.

From: Brett: Unkown 11/18/21

Comments: I purchased 2 of these reels roughly 8 years ago. Put them both on twin rods and spooled them up with 65lbs powerpro. They became my every trip pair for topwater, especially on the Cal Delta throwing frogs and occasionally a stand in flipping setup. Anyways I absolutely loved them. Sadly one gave out a couple years ago after having a 30 frog fish evening at Clearlake. And again sadly just yesterday my other finally stopped guiding line out of the blue while pitching frogs at the delta. Anyways these two workhorses landed thousands of bass and hundreds of stripers. I was seriously rough on these reels and for a hundred bucks how the heck can you go wrong? I will be looking into fixing the line guide cause the dang thing yesterday was still casting and retrieving smooth as ever. In the mean time as a true Lews fan Ill be ordering 2 more Lews reels. Thought Id share this for anyone thinking about ordering.

From: Dylan: California 9/13/21

Comments: I got this reel back in 2017 or 2018 and I didn't have a ton of money to send so I wasn't expecting much out of a 100 dollar reel, but I was amazed. This reel has held up amazingly, I've caught plenty of fish on it. a lot of 3 pounders and recently a 6 pounder, I've also caught carp on this reel and its held up more than what I was expecting. Its obviously not the smoothest reel but for 100 dollars im not sure you could get much smoother, I love mine and still use it to this day. I would honestly buy this reel over a Daiwa tatula because I wasn't super impressed with that one, but when you need budget reel that will last... lews is the way to go.

From: Johnny: California 4/3/21

Comments: After having my first reel last year, I ended up buying 9 more of those reels.  Durable, easy to use, smooth, and does the jobs I expect it to perform every time I go fishing.  I fish 3-4 times a week.  Consider me an avid and frequent fisherman.  To the point  I pair them up with mainly Duckett Fishing rods.  It shows you how confident I have in my reels I pair up with my rods.  I used Sufix Advanced mono lines, Sunline FC Sniper/Assassin/Super Fluorocarbon, Maxima Ultragreen and Berkley Trilene XL.  The reels handled those lines flawlessly, hands down compared to my former $200-300 reels which I ended up selling.

From: Jason R: Anniston, AL 3/25/21

Comments: This is a great reel. I purchased this along with a BB1 Pro and enjoy using both. I am using this one for my Jig set up and it is great. I can cast a great distance with a 3/8 jig. It is heavier and smaller that the BB1 but for the price it is an incredible reel. I have this reel paired with a Veritas PLX 7 med heavy rod and love the combo. I might switch it to a longer rod but either way, it is a great real. You will NOT regret the purchase.

From: Unknown: 1/22/21

Comments: I can't sing enough praises about this reel. I've caught everything on this reel, from 35 lb carp, to 30 lb catfish, to 8lb bass, to 40 inch gar, and the list goes on. Super durable too, had it for three years until I slipped on a rock and busted it. Ordered another one on the same day.

From: Unknown: 8/2/20

Comments: I purchased my 5th LFS Speed Spool in the past 4 years. I wanted an extra cranking reel as a backup, and for $99 I think I made a wise purchase. I have a lot of confidence in Lew's equipment. To date, I've experienced no performance issues with any Lew's rod or reel. Lew's has such affordable prices, that every fisherman can find a quality rod, reel, or combo to fit their budget. I currently own three TP-1 Speed Sticks, and each rod performs up to the task. In addition to my LFS reels, I own two BB-1 Speed Spools for cranking and general purpose. Lew's customer service is amazing, and I have always received the best treatment from all of the Lew's staff. I think I saw KVD fishing Lew's equipment on a recent fishing program? If Lew's is good enough for KVD, it's good enough for me. Lew's clothing is high quality and very comfortable.

From: John: Hendersonville 6/14/20

Comments: I bought this reel six years ago, and I am still using it today. It is safe to say this is the best reel I have ever had, and you will not find anything better for one-hundred bucks. This reel has helped me catch hundreds of fish, and the day it finally gives out will be a sad day... until I buy another one.

From: Unknown: Kentucky 5/22/20

Comments: i bought one of these a while back in 2014 when i was 8 years old i still use the same reel today i replaced a couple worn out gears but lews sent them for FREE!! lews is the best customer service i will never buy anything else best reels out there for 100$ in my opinon i love them and would reccomend for any fisherman.

From: Cade: Minnesota 4/15/20

Comments: I bought this on my birthday almost a year ago. Great reel and is smooth, has great castibility and good settings, all in all you get what you pay for and it is a great reel for the price.

From: Unknown: 4/10/20

Comments: I have to admit, this is one of the best reels out there, and its only 100$. I can cast with this reel effortlessly and far. I have had it for 3 months and have caught many large mouths and peacocks on it, and it is amazing! I like it as much as my mach 2 reel from lews.

From: Brett: Florida 4/8/20

Comments: By far the best $100 reel on the market. I have 5 of them and have not had a single issue. I have used quite a few reels in the $100-$150 price range and this one by far my favorite. I will be buying more of these in the future.

From: Unknown: SC 7/15/19

Comments: I've had my speed spool for almost a year now. Absolutely phenomenal reel. I've cleaned it once and it is super smooth and casts a mile. Best 100$ reel on the market.

From: Tyler: Keedysville 7/5/19

Comments: I've got 2 of these, and although I've always been a die-hard Shimano man, these things flat out work.  The ONLY thing i don't like about Lews is I think they are a PAIN to take the side plate off.  Other than that once you have them easily set they will work for whatever you use them for from Casting small cranks to lobbing big topwaters and everything in between; and they are a CHAMP at throwing spinnerbaits against the wind.

From: Jamie: 6/16/19

Comments: I have both the 6.8:1 and the 7.5:1 models and let me just say, I am pleasantly surprised. Ultra smooth for a reel at this price point. I can cast a weightless senko a country mile, and cannot do that on any other reel I own. Quiet, smooth, and just down right good looking with the matte black These reels have converted me to Lews for my future reel purchases.  I also recommended this reel to 2 friends who subsequently purchased. Great job on these Lews!

From: Matt: Delaware 5/28/19

Comments: I have both the 6.8:1 and the 7.5:1 2019 model and I'm telling you now, they have converted me to a Lews fan! They absolutley sling the baits, casting a weightless senko a country mile. Smooth, quiet, sharp looking with the matte black. I would buy 3 more if I could!

From: Matt: Kent County Delaware 5/23/19

Comments: Awesome reel... this is the new and improved model feels a little bit tougher than the previous model. Handles lightweight lures very well. I have the BB1 Pro, Mb, and BB1 but this is for some reason my favorite model out of all of them I seem to grab it more than any of the others. I fish 1/8oz texas rigs and 3/8-1/2oz chatter and spinnerbaits on this a lot. Never had an issue with it and it has seen the most use by far. This is my second one and the first has lasted me almost 5 years of hard hard fishing bass and saltwater and still feels just as smooth as before.

From: Mason: Spanish Fort, Al 5/15/19

Comments: I got the 7.5:1. $100 tag is awesome. The reel is super smooth right out of the box. Can't go wrong with a Lew's reel. I got it spoiled up with P-Line Tactical 20 lbs and the reel handles it like a champ. 15 lbs drag is awesome specially getting a fish out of heavy cover. Buy it and you will love it.

From: Manny: Texas 4/11/19

Comments: I don't think this reel is getting enough credit as it deserves...ive had this thing for a year now so I decided to add a review. this thing is a straight workhorse! I have reels in the 150-200 dollar range but for Texas rigs, this is my go to because it is so lightweight and fits nice in your hand. I have to say even though its not metal like the tournament speed spool its still very durable. I know this because I have both. anyone looking to get into the sport of fishing or someone on a budget I have to say this reel is for YOU!

From: sticksandscalestv: Mississippi 3/19/19

Comments: Received this reel from TW a bit over a week ago. spooled it up with 14 lb. Sunline sniper and mounted it on a 7 foot Denali medium heavy Attax rod. This reel is awesome especially considering the price. I also have several of the 2014 version of this reel ( this reel was updated in 2018) and they seem pretty much the same. Both year models perform flawlessly. I have never had a Lew's reel quit on me and I own about 18 Lew's reels (both spinning and casting) and have never had a problem. I usually fish over 200 days a year and Lew's is now the only reel in my boat. Just clean them and grease them up about 2Xs a year and they will last you a life time. Again this reel is awesome
