First, this is an excellent rod for lite jig fishing the flats with 1/16oz-1/4oz jighead with a grub or gulp on. Too lite of an action for plugs in the med version in my opinion. Couldn't work a topwater or yozuri crystal minnow that great due to the softness of the action. it felt like I was softly "pulling" the bait in instead of jerking it to create side to side walk or underwater action no matter how much jerk you put into the rod. The bait would walk or twitch until I got within 20ft or so of the boat and the line and rod wouldn't stretch out so much. The tip is lite enough to detect every shiner and even flounder bites, with enough of a parabolic action to not tear hooks from trout while still being able to cast further then anyone in the boat by 10-20+ feet with them using lightweight spinning gear and 10 pound line with same jig rig. Mine is pared with a Daiwa Coastal TWS and 15 pound Hi-Seas copoly. Liked it so much I ordered a second one with same reel. My dad and another fishing buddy both tried to take it when they felt it. Said it felt more like a lightweight bass rig then a salt rig. I dropped almost 3/4 of a pound off my arm with this combo. Wish the med has a little more backbone further up the rod for bigger slot reds. It will handle ok in the 22inch and under reds, but bigger becomes a fight like a 40plus incher. I did hook a 30plus red that put a good fight, and it felt like a 27 incher. Maybe once you get to a certain pull it all feels the same since I hit the bottom backbone of the rod. It will handle the big fish, but will take more effort then I would like in a rod with this weight class. If you like playing fish in open water that's fine, but in my area we have so many rocks and bars everywhere that a big one will run you and break you off within the first few seconds if you're not on your game and steer them away from the structure. Overall I'm happy and will be ordering another in the MH flavor to see if its still got the softer action for chunking lite baits and detecting lite bites, and maybe it will have more of a backbone further up the rod for plugs and big reds. I also see Daiwa just released two new saltwater rods I may try instead for a plug rod.
